shadowfox··on Uber rival accuses car service of dirty tactics
Could it be because Uber is a CA company? I don't know how the jurisdictions are supposed to work though.
shadowfox··on FBI files on Richard Feynman
> Seems not everyone was a fan of Mr. Feynman

Oh. Many people didn't really like him (in spite of acknowledging his ability). For example, Murray Gell-Mann - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnMsgxIIQEE

shadowfox··on Adware vendors buy Chrome Extensions to send ad- and malware-filled updates
Opera seems to allow this (and it seems to give a bit more fine grained control over when/where extensions are allowed).
shadowfox··on Pres. Obama Remarks on Intelligence Programs [video]
I think OP may be talking about expectations of the world.
shadowfox··on Female Founders
> The appropriate response is to flip these weenies the bird

That is a very mature approach, I am sure :P

shadowfox··on A Short Talk about Richard Feynman (2005)
> A great sense of humility

> But I get it. People don't like it when you toot your own horn

You have a point. But often enough people do not like it (only) when others toot their horn. They have no qualms about tooting their own horn (usually under some notion of "promoting yourself").

shadowfox··on The Silent Majority of Experts
> there is little better way to teach yourself than to discuss and debate and work with other people

Not the OP. But I know a decent number of people of the sort he mentions. These people do actually discuss and debate stuff with other people, but often in person or in rather specialized forums. They don't have a solid presence online and almost never show up in general forums.

shadowfox··on About Python 3
> I can give such examples for any commercial vendor and in terms of breaking compatibility, there are a few examples in FOSS land as well

But that wouldn't have the same emotional appeal as MS ;)

Amazon does work on a really thin profit margin though.
shadowfox··on Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
It is included in ConEmu. So it should be in Cmder too

> Kennedy's assassination was one bad action at the end of an otherwise lovely day, yet we still have to take it as part of the whole

Good lord, way to equate things.

shadowfox··on Google Acquires Boston Dynamics
> What if the robots are only used to kill evil people?

Evil by whose definition is usually the question.

shadowfox··on Reform corporate surveillance
> The difference is that Google, Facebook, et al are opt-in

With the remarkable penetration of things like google analytics and the ilk, this may not be quite that simple.

shadowfox··on What do PhD Scientists in America Have in Common with Unmarried Women in China?
> The anti-PhD meme on HN really needs to stop

Well. The most common way to feel superior is to put other things down. It just happens to be focused on PhDs when academia related stuff comes up :P

Not quite sure this is true about the ACM. From their policy about rights permanently retained by the author [1]:

* Post the Accepted Version of the Work on (1) the Author's home page, (2) the Owner's institutional repository, or (3) any repository legally mandated by an agency funding the research on which the Work is based

* Post an "Author-Izer" link enabling free downloads of the Version of Record in the ACM Digital Library on (1) the Author's home page or (2) the Owner's institutional repository;

In a way that is what often happens in therapy too. (Of course therapists tend to have training)

shadowfox··on Linux-flavored Windows
> Comma-delimited args in commands

Not quite sure what you mean.You don't need to use comma unless you explicitly want an array of values. So for example a rather simplistic cmdlet/function like this,

  Function Foo([string] $text, [int] $count) {
    #Produce repeated text
    $text * $count
  }
can be called in any of the following ways:

  Foo "ab" 3    ---> "ababab"
  Foo -text a -count 3 --> "ababab"
  Foo -t a -c 3   ---> "ababab" [Automatically disambiguated]
And we are not even using features of cmdlets like parameter aliasing.

Maybe I understood your concern wrong?

shadowfox··on Frege: A JVM pure functional programming language in the spirit of Haskell
F# has its origins in OCaml which has the same set of properties (ability to write impure code and has an object system, albeit one that not many people use). F# replaced that object system with the .NET one.
shadowfox··on Elsevier Store - Over 16000 books DRM free for $1

I am not sure Elsevier's collection intersects very much with Gutenberg.

Interesting. Where is he now? His MSR page hasn't been updated - http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/people/simonpj/

I thought only Simon Marlow left recently.

> Most languages that include garbage collection allow you to turn it off

Hmm. Clearly I don't know much about this. How do you turn off garbage collection in Java and (say) Python?
