shadowfox··on Bill Gates: You’ll never solve climate change by asking people to consume less
> to think we can build manufacturing plants at the source of raw materials, and near consumers

The source of raw materials and consumers may be quite far apart (certainly in the modern world). While it can be argued that maybe they shouldn't be, that is likely to require a significant change in consumer (human?) behavior. And then there is the question of how local is "local" - are you advocating for each city/state to be self-sufficient in terms of agriculture and manufacturing or are you considering a whole massive country like the US as "local".

shadowfox··on Some things to learn from the British East India Company's growth and demise
I am not sure that is true. From what he has mentioned before he is an American of Bangladeshi origin.

What in your opinion are the positives that came out of colonialism?
shadowfox··on I ran the worlds largest DDoS-for-Hire empire and Cloudflare helped
> A private company should not be making decisions on essentially freedom of speech

On the other hand, a private company has limited obligation to uphold what is essentially a government concern ... Unless we start redefining a lot of things related to private obligation.

shadowfox··on Give up GitHub: The time has come
> Any tool that makes you more productive at the cost of taking away the pleasure of figuring it out on your own bores and depresses me

I mean, you don't have to use these tools yourself, particularly since you have to pay for it and therefore there is no "it is free" allure.

While I understand what you are saying about the pleasure of figuring things out yourself (and do enjoy that feeling myself), I don't feel that the mere existence of the tool affects me that much.

shadowfox··on Woman in England told to represent herself in legal first
Interesting, but what is the relevance of a mid, last century American president's thoughts on unions to the UK of now with a pretty different political structure and beliefs around collective bargaining?
shadowfox··on Potato diet community trial
> but consists basically of "don't eat processed food or added sugar."

Paleo goes a bit beyond that, to be fair.

shadowfox··on Make the Raku programming language familiar to C++ programmers

Does this do the right thing on Windows?

shadowfox··on “Code” 2nd Edition

Do you have any suggestions in this regard?

shadowfox··on Leslie Lamport revolutionized computer science with math [video]
Out of curiosity, which companies do this sort of research?
shadowfox··on Windows Terminal Source Code
> Meanwhile, Windows without hardware less than 2 years old is absolutely worthless

This seems like a massive exaggeration. I am currently running Windows 10 on a refurbished laptop I bought in 2012! (So, actual hardware is even older).

shadowfox··on PowerToys – open-source Windows utilities
I don't think the plugin support is quite the same?
shadowfox··on The awake ape: Why people sleep less than their primate relatives
> People essentially slept two times a night. They went to bed at sunset. Then, they woke up for an hour or two around midnight, which apparently was used, everything being dark, for sex and contemplation. And then they fell asleep for a second time, until sunrise

This, as far as I can tell, was not a very universal thing, at least across cultures.

shadowfox··on An update on the campaign to defend serious math education in California
> At least in other countries, the upper class ideal is a renaissance man.

Sadly, I don't think that is very true in many (most?) places.

shadowfox··on The Front-End Developer's Guide to the Terminal
> For Windows users, it's probably worthwhile installing the Windows's Terminal app (from Microsoft) vs using cmd.exe or powershell.exe.

While the windows terminal is pretty useful, it is not a command shell; you still have to use a shell with it (like Cmd, PowerShell, or one of the many Linux shell ports or WSL)

shadowfox··on Ask HN: What Happened to Lambda-the-Ultimate.org?
This seems like a bit of a strange take to me.

LTU was hardly about DSLs or even particular languages, though of course that came up on and off. It was fundamentally a place with discussions on PL theory and related stuff, with the front page being predominantly about current papers. So, the success of Javascript/drop in DSL popularity seem like a strange reason for LTU to stop being useful.

shadowfox··on Entitlement issues (2009)
I mean, while this is sort of true in general, I don't know if the poverty/bad-pay argument would apply to authors like Martin or Rothfuss.

Writing is of course hard as you say though.

shadowfox··on My essential Firefox fixes in 2022
> about:profiles is actually a useful way to manage multiple logins. I used to have one set of accounts in ff, another in chrome. But now I just have multiple windows open in different profiles (and themes to distinguish) each with different login state

You could also use firefox containers: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account...

shadowfox··on Elon, SpaceX and Ukraine
> was it a big deal, also no

Of course, since you weren't the actual target of his rant or his attempts to dig up dirt on that guy.

shadowfox··on My Journey to Chess Mastery
That was somewhat anti-climatic for its title.
shadowfox··on Inside Pornhub
> Would you agree to go to jail if a user posts something illegal on a forum you run? > No? Fair and reasonable. Neither do I. Now let's ask ourselves - would ANYONE reply yes? A bit unlikely?

You seem to be asking rhetorical questions and then answering them on your own instead of letting the OP answer? So, I am not sure what the point is?

shadowfox··on What are your company's anti-values?
Not the OP, but that situation seems to indicate espousing unrealistic values at the least or am I misreading what you are saying?
shadowfox··on How fresh grads with zero experience get hired as senior engineers
You generally need that and typically reasonable experience wrangling different legal matters at scale. I guess Musk was just being Musk.
shadowfox··on Finnish diplomats’ phones infected with NSO Group Pegasus spyware
A lot of these issues will not be solvable technically, though. Given the way systems/software is built currently, vulnerabilities are going to exist and there are very highly paid and motivated people working on figuring out how to exploit them. It also does not help that mobile devices are in use for much longer than they receive security updates etc.

I am not saying that these issues can/will be solved by legal and political means (especially given that it is not restricted to a single country), but it seems rather unlikely that these issues can be solved by pure technical means at the current point.

shadowfox··on Parler Raises $20M
I may be confused by what you are saying. What is the point of a company having an ideological stance if "free speech", if they are violating that all the time by censoring? How is that different from paying lip service to free speech like many companies?
shadowfox··on The Scientific Paper is Obsolete (2018)
How do you go about converting the papers?
shadowfox··on Parrots will share currency to help their pals purchase food (2020)
> She cannot produce language.

That you can understand ...

shadowfox··on Assume everyone is stupid, lazy and possibly insane, including you
> I usually assume everyone is stupid, including myself, that's the most humble thing a person can do IMO

It seems strange that the most humble thing you can do is to assume everyone else is stupid (even if you were to include yourself in to that mix)

shadowfox··on Selecting a programming language can be a form of premature optimization
I mean it is not just mentioning a specific experience to refute a generalization when there is also this: "Python is the tool of choice for those developers who just want to get stuff done."
shadowfox··on Types and Programming Languages (2002)
There are somewhat more involved formal treatments like Welterweight Java [1], which adds some more features, but of course, nowhere near the full set of Java features.

Some of the citations in that paper are also interesting.

I don't think there is a core calculus that specifically incorporates generics as in Java, but I could be wrong. In any case, much of Java's generics flow from theories of parametric polymorphism [2], specifically I believe bounded parametric polymorphism [3].
