sgent··on In NYC, almost 9 in 10 Covid-19 patients on ventilators don't make it
Yep, oxygen through nasal cannulas or some sort of oxygen injected into a CPAP / BiPAP system.
sgent··on Employees refuse to return to work as long as they’re getting extra $600/week.
So he fired them, and now wants them to come back in exchange for a pay cut and potential death.

In addition, cooks legally can't be paid tips, so he's ripping off his servers (and I'm guessing cooks as well).

sgent··on Boeing finds debris left in new 737 MAXes, now in storage
Your correct of course. The 767 refueling plane has been on hold for almost a year since the Air Force kept finding random parts strewn all over the plane.

Many airlines will not accept the 787 built on the east coast until they are flown to Seattle to be inspected there first.

sgent··on Aviation industry tries to go green
I don't know what the data is, but the DHC-8/Q-400 is a fairly popular regional airplane outside the US, and depending on the model goes from 1300 - 5000hp.

sgent··on Man diagnosed with coronavirus near Seattle is being treated largely by a robot
But stable doesn't mean (for instance) treating your very treatable brain cancer after discharge. They will remove the tumor causing falling and doziness, but won't provide radiation / chemo follow-up until its terminal and you have to be inpatient.
sgent··on Ask HN: Which project does not have any good open-source alternatives?
This really depends on the Google v Oracle lawsuit currently. If Oracle wins then the remains of VisCalc will have a copyright claim against everyone...
sgent··on Uber Founder Travis Kalanick Is Leaving the Company’s Board of Directors
In a public company there's a real time commitment -- not just regular meetings, but committee meetings, etc.

That said, its more like a 5-10hr / wk commitment, not a full time job.

sgent··on We Need More Doctors Who Are Scientists
In the US you need an undergrad plus 4 years of dental school. Most dentists then start practice immediately, although some go on to do a residency in Orthodontics or other area.

Oral surgeons do a 5 year residency after dental school, and are usually awarded an MD as well as the DDS from dental school.

Physicians do undergrad + 4 year med school + 3-9 years of residency / fellowship.

sgent··on A person has died from a vaping-related condition
The big kicker is people didn't start all types of vaping 3 months ago. My guess is this is some sort of contaminated something (with a biological agent).

Heavy metal, lead, asbestos, radium, etc. don't cause 100+ people to be hospitalized in the span of three months, they work over decades.

sgent··on Banks can accidentally lose safe deposit boxes
Vaults containing boxes can also flood (see Katrina).
sgent··on China ready to hit back at U.S. with rare earths
China is by far the worst offender. Their laws resemble a developing economy while they are significantly industrialized. Make no mistake that the majority of the US including the Democratic congress support Trump on the goals -- if not 100% on the methods.

Quite stupidly the US picked a trade battle with Canada and the UK/EU before going after China. Trump's administration had the termidity to call Canada a security threat while the air defence of the US mainland's second in command is a Canadian General.

sgent··on The Books of College Libraries Are Turning into Wallpaper
All my local university libraries (including a few excellent ones) allow anyone to use the stacks for free. If you want to check something out or you want access to the computer databases you may have to pay to join the "Friends of the Library" or Alumni Association. Access to the databases is often restricted to students / staff though.
sgent··on What a Midwife Wishes People Knew About Her Job
The US has 2 levels of obstetrics professionals -- MD/DO and Certified Nurse Midwife. CNM's are nurse practitioners with a Masters or Doctorate degree. They don't do surgery, and the smart ones don't do births outside the hospital.

In the US you also have "Professional Midwives", Doula's and Certified Professional Midwifes -- none of which have any real health care training requirements. In most other countries when they speak of midwifes, they mean nurse midwives.

sgent··on Insurers balk at paying for some cyberattacks
The policies in question are not paying were due to NotPetya. The Ukraine and Russia were in an open shooting war, and Russia loaded infected the Ukrainian tax commission's computer. When companies logged in to the Ukrainian computer, they became infected.

Was collateral damage done by this virus to say Maersk (who got the virus from their Ukraine subsidiary) or others an act of war?

sgent··on Insurers balk at paying for some cyberattacks
Three can be addressed by requiring security audits. Historically the Big 4 have done them for SOX compliance or other reasons, but its becoming much more routine for internal purposes. There is no reason it couldn't expand to external users (insurance companies). Many accounting firms are already doing them for hospital boards, etc.

Just like financial audits (or lack thereof) determine your loan rates in a SMB business, a security audit will do likewise.

sgent··on American Airlines extends Boeing 737 MAX cancellations through August 19
The airframe according to reports has some stability issues at the edge of its flight envelope. That could have been resolved by requiring additional simulator training for pilots -- but Boeing chose the MCAS system to avoid the cost, and the revenue hit (reportedly $1million / plane by Southwest alone).
sgent··on American College of Radiology unveils free AI software development platform
Reading from the ACR website, I saw the word "open" but not "free". At least in my experience it means no beer or speech. Remember that PACS systems use different file formats, storage technologies (flat file, RDMS, tree storage, etc.) and the ACR has interfaces to them all for peer review and other clinical processes. In this context it could just mean its building a toolkit that can operate on all systems.

According to this link: https://www.acrdsi.org/Get-Involved/AI-LAB more information will be released next month at their conference.
