sfjailbird··on The 600-year-old origins of the word 'hello'
Yeah, it seems Nordic, Nordic languages still have an archaic native version that could be the proto-hello: 'Hil' meaning 'be greeted', surviving as 'hail' in English, or, somewhat infamously, 'heil' in German.
sfjailbird··on Kidnapped by Deutsche Bahn
Oh yes. Driving over from Copenhagen to Malmoe (10 km) it's like you've entered the land of the robots. It's nice and clean though.
sfjailbird··on I ported JustHTML from Python to JavaScript with Codex CLI and GPT-5.2 in hours
Like Cucumber?

sfjailbird··on Roomba maker goes bankrupt, Chinese owner emerges
Fortunately, China is not strongarming or invading the rest of the world.
sfjailbird··on Apple to beat Samsung in smartphone shipments for first time in 14 years
Z Fold 3 here, going happily on 4-5 years.

Samsung has nice hardware quality, but no sense of UX, and that goes for their software and hardware.

sfjailbird··on Typing an AI prompt is not 'active' music creation
Polished and average is a good description. There are also no highs or lows across a track - it is very samey all the way through, where an actual creative person will build some kind of arc into a song.
sfjailbird··on Tesla Is Recalling Cybertrucks Again
X-Pengs are where it's at. They are taking over fast in Europe with better cars for less money.
sfjailbird··on Asus Announces October Availability of ProArt Display 8K PA32KCX
Yeah, window management is certainly better with separate monitors, hopefully this will get better with time.

On the flip side I would love to get rid of physically managing three individual pieces of hardware that wasn't made to work together as one setup.

sfjailbird··on Asus Announces October Availability of ProArt Display 8K PA32KCX
I have three 4K 27" which yield a bit more screen real estate. Otherwise I'd love to go to a single ultrawide.
sfjailbird··on Roc Camera
There was a time when web pages were like regular documents, that could easily be scrolled through.
sfjailbird··on Event Sourcing, CQRS and Micro Services: Real FinTech Example
Traumatic flashbacks to 2017. Glad we moved on from this nonsense. Still dealing with the wreckage, though.

Event sourcing is a terrible idea that may be useful for some incredibly niche scenario.

sfjailbird··on I almost got hacked by a 'job interview'
A server running in a Docker container does not usually have access to anything on the host, right. Perhaps some disk access on a mounted volume or something.
sfjailbird··on Japan sets record of nearly 100k people aged over 100
> The two most common oils in Japan are canola and soybean, and that's also historically been the case

Umm, canola oil has only been available since the 70s. Even rapeseed oil has only been used since the 50s (it is toxic and unpalatable without modern industrial processing, as are many seed oils).

sfjailbird··on Over 80% of sunscreen performed below their labelled efficacy (2020)
There are SPF 50 sunscreens that are practically invisible.
sfjailbird··on A staff engineer's journey with Claude Code
A hundred times more time is spent reading a given piece of code, than it took writing it, in the lifetime of that program.

OK I made up the statistic, but the core idea is true, and it's something that is rarely considered in this debate. At least with code you wrote, you can probably recognize it later when you need to maintain it or just figure out what it does.

sfjailbird··on The Framework Desktop is a beast
Oh wow, it does indeed have "AI" in its name twice. Cant't wait for this shit to blow over.
sfjailbird··on I bought a £16 smartwatch just because it used USB-C
Yes, it's worse. Seven eyes almost certainly snoop on me, in partnership with those companies. CCP might, but even if they did, idgaf.
sfjailbird··on Captain Cook's missing ship found after sinking 250 years ago
Maybe they did a public poll to name the vessel...
sfjailbird··on Fields where Native Americans farmed a thousand years ago discovered in Michigan
You're all overthinking it. They dumped their kitchen waste in the fields, and it happened to contain broken pottery too. It's the same for other archeological sites all over, many are waste dumps that contain interesting objects.
sfjailbird··on How the Final Cartridge III Freezer Works
I had forgotten what a big deal 'freezer' cartridges were on the C64!

A friend's uncle manufactured these himself using an EPROM burner and God knows where he got the casings, and sold them to us kids. Worked great. I had no idea about the amount of hacking that went into making them work.

sfjailbird··on Major sugar substitute found to impair brain blood vessel cell function
Maltitol is a bit different, because it is actually quite caloric. It just digests slower.
sfjailbird··on Major sugar substitute found to impair brain blood vessel cell function
> It was tested in a cell culture, so not in a human or animal. That does change a lot of things.

The article points out that similar observations have already been made in human subjects:

> Positive associations between circulating erythritol and incidence of heart attack and stroke have been observed in U.S. and European cohorts

sfjailbird··on De-anonymization attacks against the privacy coin XMR
Isn't BTC privacy achievable these days with coinjoin, lightning network etc.? In that case no much reason for monero.
sfjailbird··on Legendary Bose Magic Carpet Suspension Is Finally Going Global
So these systems depend, in part, on memorizing road data. I.e. another privacy issue in the making.
sfjailbird··on Adipose tissue retains an epigenetic memory of obesity after weight loss
Insulin sensitivity is a real thing. The less sensitive to insulin you are, the more of it is produced to process a given amount of glucose. And the more insulin (anabolic) is produced, the less glucagon (catabolic) is.

In other words, low insulin sensitivity means your body remains in the feeding (fat building) state more, as opposed to fasting (fat burning).

Insulin sensitivity decreases with age, and with excessive intake of particularly simple carbs. It can be improved through fasting, certain dietary supplements, and low carb diet.

All of this is, to the best of my knowledge, not disputed or 'bro science'.

sfjailbird··on Philip K. Dick: Stanisław Lem Is a Communist Committee (2015)
Funny how closely his own machinations resemble the (obviously comically deranged) delusions of some of his characters. He was clearly quite self-aware, as another comment noted, or could it be that the whole FBI report was a jest? It really reads exactly like a passage from his novels.

The subtext of the report to the FBI, that we must suppress artistic expression in order to protect the innocent minds from dangerous ideas, remains as relevant and intriguing today as then.

sfjailbird··on Show HN: I vibecoded a 35k LoC recipe app
'Silicon Valley' was a practically a documentary. It's just a gold mine of absurdity out here.
sfjailbird··on Gemini 2.5 Pro vs. Claude 3.7 Sonnet: Coding Comparison
Every test task, including the coding test, is a greenfield project. Everything I would consider using LLMs for is not. Like, I would always need it to do some change or fix on a (large) existing project. Hell, even the examples that were generated would likely need subsequent alterations (ten times more effort goes into maintaining a line of code than writing it).

So these tests are meaningless to me, as a measure of how useful these models are. Great for comparison with each other, but would be interesting to include some tests with more realistic work.

sfjailbird··on 4o Image Generation
They're glass-half-full type models.
sfjailbird··on “Vibe Coding” vs. Reality
This brilliant piece of satire from Steve Yegge got buried for some reason:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43446695

Judging by the comments, most people couldn't even tell it was satire, which goes to show how absurd the hype is right now (and probably why it was buried).
