sfard··on Distraction free writing and the simplest blogging platform in one
A front-end dev friend of mind asked for code-embedding/syntax highlighting too! I'd be happy to add it if I can come up with an elegant implementation. Is there a "markdown" for code that you know of?
sfard··on Show HN: A small weekend project - Distraction Free Writing
k - I wont lie, that wont be a priority. But I'll add it to work list.

Thanks! I made throwww for the exact same reason. Nothing quite fit my use case.

As for your concern. A few users have requested a "download" feature to archive their posts. The features I'm planning on adding in the short term include

* "Download" support. Probably XML or RTF options.

* RSS

* "Discover" page with curated/voted posts. Kind of like user pages (e.g., throwww.com/u/sfard) except with content from several users

* subdomain user support (i.e., username.throwww.com)

* Potentially "groups"

Wow, I just realized how androcentric that is. I just changed it.

Woah just happened to come across this! Thanks for sharing, akos.

I built (and am continuously working on) throwww. Let me know if you have any questions. Also here's kind of a mission statement of sorts http://throwww.com/a/1

Thanks. Can you say more re: comments? Would you prefer something like a Disqus?
sfard··on Show HN: A small weekend project - Distraction Free Writing
You can post and edit whenever you want (effectively working as preview), so I thought (with the aim of keeping UI incredibly lightweight) I'd keep a "preview" button out.

By your question though, it sounds like I'll need to find a solution.

<shamelessselfpromotion> If you DO want to save what you write, try http://throwww.com I built it a few months ago. Collections of what you write look like this http://throwww.com/u/sfard A ton more features coming in next few weeks. </shamelessselfpromotion>
sfard··on Social Media and a Case for Radical Authenticity
Yah, I actually started formulating the idea when I was thinking about a local business owner in Vancouver - Vikram Vij. The guy is the brand. What draws people to him and his stores is his incredible authenticity. His interactions with people and his business practices are all products of his authentic self. It's really amazing to see. The guy doesn't advertise or take reservations at all and has one of the most succesfull restaurants in the city.
sfard··on HTML has tables - then why divs?
Tables are for tabular data. A lot (maybe most) interfaces are not tabular.
sfard··on Ask HN: What's the best way to meet other developers to collaborate with?
This is very helpful, thank you.

I never thought of going to hackathons or helping on open source projects.

sfard··on A Crash Course in Information and Visual Design
A few people asked me for recommended reading, so I added "Additional references" to the bottom of the article. I put a couple of my favorite books there. There are tons of great sources for inspiration online, but as far as educative (wow that's a word?) material goes, a lot of design web articles are sadly pretty crappy.
sfard··on A Crash Course in Information and Visual Design
Thanks ndunn2. When I built the commenting system, I figured that asking people for the bare minimum information from their twitter account would be enough to get them to sign up, but it really seems I was wrong. I worried anon posts would result in too many "stfu nigger fag" type comments, and didn't want to give up any design to Disqus. And sign-up on the site I figured was too much of a hastle. Ugh......
sfard··on A Crash Course in Information and Visual Design
I would assume your guess is right. You have infinite room to scroll on a browser where you don't on a newspaper.
sfard··on A Crash Course in Information and Visual Design
Good point - I'll add some reference material.
sfard··on A Crash Course in Information and Visual Design
I wrote this cause I had some time and figured I could have used something like this when I started out. I hope it's helpful.
sfard··on Airbnb Is Raising A Big Third Round, Aiming For A Valuation North Of $2B
Just to put this in perspect. Starwood has a valuation of about $10 billion.

Starwood employs 150,000 people, has 1000 hotels worldwide, and has revenues of ~$6 billion

I'm not saying AirBNB can't be huge one day, but a $2B valuation... wow.

sfard··on Cleanest Blogging Platform?
I like mine more throwww.com

:P

sfard··on Ask HN: If HN was a country, it would look like
A country full of nerdy men. All that violent virginal angst would probably lead it to many many wars.
sfard··on Throwww Introduces More Features
Thanks - I think more apps don't do it partly because they don't prioritize the single thing they want to be amazing at. Throwww only really has one broad-use case... writing shit... so it makes it easier to do this.

Wish I could say it was optional, but I'm not that clever.

I thought most people used "tab" to go to the next field. Didn't occur to me that "enter" was common. Looks like it is for at least one person. Let me do some reading/surveying. I might add that to next version. Thanks again.

sfard··on Throwww Introduces More Features
Thanks. I hope so too.

And good feedback. I was meaning to add some padding, but it somehow slipped my mind!

sfard··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
Whoops, forgot to change some settings before deploying. Should work now. Thanks for the catch!
sfard··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
I think the trend you describe could be put in terms of disintermediation of web properties. Facebook, for instance, tries to be a platform that does everything. But much like real life, products are beginning to specialize because niche products can just do a better job at meeting the needs of a segment. That's why I disagree with you that this is just a trend.
sfard··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
Sorry, I forgot to change a variable in my settings file, so Twitter was calling back to my local machine. Hence it worked for me but no one else. Fixed now.

As for bugs, for now you can email me... saeidm[at]gmail.com or @sfard on twitter.

Much appreciated!

sfard··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
Oh and the viewed 2 times is sheer laziness. I set the viewcount to 1 upon creation to avoid potential future errors like dividing viewcount by a number etc. And then when it opens it becomes 2.
sfard··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
Damn! Thanks for letting me know. Can you tell me what, if anything, it says?
sfard··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
What do you mean by extend the twitter? As in post the first part of the article on their behalf?

I was thinking of something like that, but wanted to make the use case as general as possible so people can decide how they want to use it. Maybe I'm wrong :S

sfard··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
Thanks, man! (assuming you are a man).

Nice scri.ch btw. You still working on it?

And as for revenue etc, I just built this for fun last week cause I was tired of how Posterous kept getting more bloated every time I used it. No thoughts about this as a business, really.

sfard··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
You know, I tried centering it and it looked "off" to me. Just my eye, though. I'd be curious if others feel the same. Anyone else's thoughts?
sfard··on Show HN: A Really Simple Blog Platform
The original use case I had in mind was to allow twitter users to write more than 140 characters. I've since drifted away from that, and a plain ol' user registration option might make a lot more sense now.

As for user dashboards, there's just this for now http://throwww.com/u/sfard
