Not the parent commenter but

1. Great if you have a wider screen (could never do it on my old 13" Macbook Air, for a 15" it's pretty good but for a 24" iMac it's perfect). But if you need the space youjust have it set to minimize by default, maximize on hover.

2. See the titles of your browser tabs, which is great when you are like me and never have fewer than 30 tabs open at once.

3. Easier to select browser tabs when you have many of them open (ie they don't get squished unreadably small)

I love Kagi as a search engine but the Orion UI feels too similar to Safari to really enjoy it as much.

I do enjoy vertical tabs, faster browsing, better privacy obviously. But "largely" is doing some heavy lifting in your mention of chrome extension support. I use about a dozen chrome extensions typically and about 4 of them are supported by Orion last I checked. Although of course #12 in Chrome is the Kagi search extension itself :)

The bookmarks bar seems consistently wonky though, with bookmarks showing the wrong logos (like Google Sheets showing up with the Google Docs logo, or ChatGPT showing some weirdly cropped version of itself), inability to rearrange bookmarks in a folder without opening the dedicated bookmark manager page.

If some basic usability things like this were fixed, along with adding tab groups (also big for me when I have 50 tabs open), I'd probably give it another go. Kagi search engine has largely replaced google search already for me so I'll definitely give it another go once these things are updated.

Ironically, as an American the only time in my life when I had a waiter effectively ask us (a couple) to hurry up so other diners could sit, was at a Michelin starred restaurant in Naples, Italy. We hadn't even been there an hour, weren't even done eating yet. Perplexes me to this day.

I won't get into the larger point your comment is making about power structures + definitions as I don't know enough about those histories to get into your assertions, but wanted to point out that the parent comment didn't seem to suggest these discrepancies were "biologically inert" as you were refuting (I'm also assuming you meant "inherent"). They were commenting on the a racial difference in educational outcomes. From my understanding that's largely a systemic issue, and regardless of shifting definitions/categorization, not a conversation about biology anymore.

That's interesting, it seems like it would accidentally penalize a lot of "good" posts too, like people asking questions to better understand a topic/perspective

This might not be entirely relevant since I'm not an expert in the 3d visual community but my friends launched this project and it might be something you'd be interested in

I normally use the Harmonic app and it hasn't been loading post replies the last 2 days or so, citing a likely Algolia issue. Maybe a related issue.

Pardon my ignorance, but can't you just solve this by disabling location permissions, etc for a given app?

setsewerd··on OpenAI's new open-source model is basically Phi-5
I've heard the theory a few times lately that AI businesses will increasingly move towards usage models over subscription models, so while it is probably accidental, it could also be a longer term strategy to normalize excessive token usage.
setsewerd··on GPT-5
Sounds like there are a lot of frustrations here but as a fellow android user just wanted to point out that you can tap the word ChatGPT in your chat (top left) and it opens the model selector.

Although if they replace it all with gpt5 then my comment will be irrelevant by tomorrow

setsewerd··on Open AI announces $1.5M bonus for every employee
While I agree, it's also worth pointing out the different economics here. By the superintelligence calculus, "winning" the AI race has the potential to put a given individual/company/government in a position of obscene dominance in the world, so the potential ROI for this type of investment makes any cost seem almost trivial.
setsewerd··on Qwen3-4B-Thinking-2507
Since the ranking is based on token usage, wouldn't this ranking be skewed by the fact that small models' APIs are often used for consumer products, especially free ones? Meanwhile reasoning models skew it in the opposite direction, but to what extent I don't know.

It's an interesting proxy, but idk how reliable it'd be.

setsewerd··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting ceasing operations
Many major establishment news orgs are similarly guilty of a heavy pro-Israel bias (WSJ and NYT as other examples), but I would argue this is more on the establishment vs independent spectrum, rather than the left vs right spectrum.

Equating a for-profit news corporation's politics with how they handle a singular topic like Gaza would be a bit reductive.

setsewerd··on OpenAI's "Study Mode" and the risks of flattery
It's worth reminding readers here that David Foster Wallace committed suicide, so perhaps some of his views on topics like this were not the healthiest.
setsewerd··on OpenAI's "Study Mode" and the risks of flattery
Not the parent commenter, but this scam is super common in South Asia in general. It was attempted on me a couple times in India, but luckily (and in some ways, unfortunately) by that point I'd seen such a wide range of scams there that my shields were always up against potential scams.
setsewerd··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting ceasing operations
Yeah I've been bummed by how far NPR has swerved leftward, especially since 2016. Even ten years ago I liked tuning in because it was quality journalism that still made an honest effort to cover multiple sides of an issue, even if the topics they chose were primarily "liberal" topics. But yeah, now they seem just as tribal as Fox.

setsewerd··on Salesforce CEO Claims Half of the Company's Work Is Now Done by AI
Re: HubSpot, not sure if you follow them closely but they've been making some big strides in recent years and imo are a lot more competitive for enterprise than they used to be. That, and they're not a dumpster fire of cobbled acquisitions like Salesforce has become.
setsewerd··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
I agree with your point, but you're also making a different argument than the point you're replying to. Google knows way more about you than they're legally able to apply to advertising. Just because they can't use it for that specific purpose doesn't mean they lack the information.
setsewerd··on TimeGuessr
Yeah I had issues with the mobile web version as well. Worked for 4 rounds but then the time selector stopped moving when I tried to select, and the map stopped loading detail when zooming in (and wouldn't let me place a pin). Started over and the same thing happened in the 3rd round.

Still a great little game though

setsewerd··on Google contract prevented Motorola from setting Perplexity as default assistant
Aren't those first two points being phased out?

E..g. Google recently announced that it will be moving Android development entirely to its private internal branch, no more development sharing. They say they'll still be open source, but Google has been caught lying about a lot of things lately.

(Sent from my Android.)

setsewerd··on Kagi Assistant is now available to all users
Not sure if you mean you work at Kagi, but I also want to add that when opening the Android app, the splash page takes a full second or so to load before the search bar opens, which doesn't sound like much but it makes it harder to habitually use Kagi as my default mobile search.

The Kagi widget technically solves this, but without installing a new launcher I can't replace the native Google search bar with the Kagi one.

setsewerd··on Whistleblower details how DOGE may have taken sensitive NLRB data
Out of curiosity, since you appear to be very certain of this, what are you doing personally to deal with this? Are you leaving the country, moving into the hills, building a bunker, etc? I don't mean to sound antagonistic or anything, I genuinely would like to know.
setsewerd··on Trade, Tariffs, and Tech
There's definitely still a part of me hoping that in order to have what it takes to win the presidency, a president has to be much more capable than the average person when it comes to operating at these peak positions of global power. So while I'm not big on the 4D chess arguments, I do like to keep an open mind and question whether the most obvious prevailing interpretations might be wrong or at least incomplete.

But of course this might just be wishful thinking because the alternative is a pretty hard pill to swallow, so it's less anxiety-inducing to stay optimistic.

setsewerd··on Trade, Tariffs, and Tech
My understanding of economics doesn't go further than a few college classes I took, and I have no idea how sophisticated the models are that modern economists are using to make these kinds of conclusions. And Trump's whole approach does seem to be a pretty terrible idea from what I've read.

However, a part of me is curious whether certain political maneuvers (power dynamics etc) are sufficiently captured in modern economic models? Could there be a reason that the Trump administration is continuing to persevere on something that is seen across the board as an objectively bad idea? Is it possible that this is actually smarter than just a poorly calculated ego trip or a means to game the economy for personal profit?

setsewerd··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
Tacking onto this I think the more important variable for ease of conversation is the extent to which someone's sense of identity is tied to their political beliefs.

E.g. I'm moderately left but I'll still engage in healthy conversation with right-leaning friends and acquaintances because I like to understand where they're coming from. However I have some friends who I love dearly but know that despite their intelligence and how much I enjoy their company, they've become very tribal in their politics, so I don't bother engaging in political discussions with them beyond basic diplomatic contributions. Or posing questions that offer new perspectives. I still trust them and value their friendship though.
