setquk··on Amazon Pulls Books That Promote Unscientific Autism ‘Cures’
If that happens, it'll be the greatest evolutionary step we have made for hundreds of years.
setquk··on Amazon Pulls Books That Promote Unscientific Autism ‘Cures’
And I ask you this question: is it morally acceptable to allow someone to harm someone else?
setquk··on Amazon Pulls Books That Promote Unscientific Autism ‘Cures’
Hmm. First heading in the NHS fat guidance is "Why we need some fat", then a breakdown of what and why https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/different-fats-nutriti... . A very balanced and well written document. As for a keto diet, it has a number of well documented and researched side effects the proponents forget to mention such as cognitive issues. On diets, most people are looking for ideologies rather than facts and those are easy to sell.

Fuck suspicious people. They're idiots. And you should point at them and make it known. Not only are they idiots but they are actively harming someone and that's a prime violation of the ethic of reciprocity. To allow harm to continue is as bad. Seriously bad. I know someone who's parents skipped the MMR vaccine, they got measles, lost their hearing permanently. That was totally avoidable and physical harm came to someone. Actual life-long disability. And there are LOTS of people who go through this.

If you put your arrogant self-interest in front of logic, data and research then the child will come to harm one day.

We shouldn’t censor them because that has side effects when any sort of mechanism is introduced.

However two laws should be made:

1. Not vaccinating your kids should be classified as a child protection offence (unless there is medical basis from a panel, not one quack). Kids are confiscated, vaccinated and put into state care after one warning.

2. Promoting non NHS / FDA etc approved medical advice should be a criminal offence and ends up with the publisher, author, owners being chucked in jail.

The latter covers bullshit like homeopathy and Chinese herbal medicine as well.

There’s no place for any of this in 2019. We should actively shame anyone partaking in this.

Indeed.

At this point, a Gopher revival is looking pretty enticing to serve content, not lock in, vendor wars or piles of straw stuck together with poo.

They've burned a lot of APIs in the last few years.
setquk··on DTrace on Windows
From Microsoft's documentation:

Microsoft strongly recommends developers utilize alternative means to achieve your application s needs. Many scenarios that TxF was developed for can be achieved through simpler and more readily available techniques. Furthermore, TxF may not be available in future versions of Microsoft Windows. For more information, and alternatives to TxF, please see Alternatives to using Transactional NTFS.

Reparse points could be emulated at API level.

MFT is an internal structure. They could fix it TBH but the issue is that this would require an NTFS filesystem revision and for those of us who suffered through NT4's broken ass filesystems might start complaining :)
setquk··on DTrace on Windows
Not a lot of this matters in the real world. The real shame is the shitty small file performance due to MFT contention on NTFS.
setquk··on Tesla’s Troubles Mount: Shuttered Showrooms and Sinking Shares
I’m a proverbial dad as well.

No didn’t test drive it. Petrol.

setquk··on Tesla’s Troubles Mount: Shuttered Showrooms and Sinking Shares
Having watched people in the Tesla retail store at Westfield here in the UK, it was basically a playground for kids and adults alike. I reckon they sold very few cars if any through that outlet.

I'd buy one off the Internet. I bought my current car, a Citroen, off the Internet unseen. It's pretty low risk if you pay deposit with credit card here in the UK.

Assholes. I would have just chargebacked the damn thing if they pulled that shit on me.

Edit: this sort of denialism makes me feel dirty owning an iphone.

So true. One of the first things I did was build a direct conversion receiver with decent audio filtering. It had 45 mostly discrete components and sounded as good as a top end Yaesu. Similar to this one: https://aa7ee.wordpress.com/2012/07/27/using-the-nm0s-hi-per...

It put me off too for many years. If it’s any consolation there’s a lot more welcoming people these days. Tends to be the older hams and a section of black box operators who suffer from elitism. The younger lot (under 50) are totally different.

As for open source, this was probably the original open source. Lots of people build their own radios and still do and publish the designs for nothing. There are technical journals such as Sprat which cover this on old fashioned paper form. Software is mostly open now from what I have seen. Main tool these days for digital modes is a good example http://www.physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx.html - some people are using this with home build SSB transceivers and computer interfaces.

Wise choice. I bought a 2018 MBA with a “fixed butterfly keyboard”. Keyboard was useless after two weeks so it went back.

Back on the thinkpad now.

You can do satellites and ISS with a feng though. Don’t have to go across or round, up is good too :)
setquk··on Be Vewy Vewy Quiet, We’re Hunting Baofengs
You’re correct but that doesn’t stop them being useful.
setquk··on Be Vewy Vewy Quiet, We’re Hunting Baofengs
It's worse than that really. A lot of people are like a acquaintance of mine. Bought a FT DX 5000MP, which wasn't cheap, has hundreds of books on the matter, boxes of cables and bits of antenna, speaks knowledgably on the subject but hasn't made a single contact yet after 5 years of having a license. But he hates 'feng scum like me.
setquk··on Be Vewy Vewy Quiet, We’re Hunting Baofengs
They're not that bad really. The programming interface sucks but what HT doesn't it suck on?

I've got an FT-60 and FT-818 as well for ref.

setquk··on Be Vewy Vewy Quiet, We’re Hunting Baofengs
The attitude towards Baofeng handsets annoys me somewhat. I've had both of mine on an SA and they were absolutely fine.

What tends to happen I reckon is that the end user runs it into a cheap antenna or mismatch and nukes the LPF, something which can happen to a $500 Yaesu HT if you're an idiot.

But the gatekeeping is strong in amateur radio. Annoyingly so.

Ugh. I’ve been shafted by all of those ideologies.

It turned me grey, bald and cynical aka experienced in every possible way to fuck something up. That turned out to be quite valuable!

setquk··on FastMail loses customers, faces calls to move over anti-encryption laws
Another happy customer here! Incidentally this does not worry me as I don't use email for any secure or private communications and I don't think anyone ever should. At best any warrants will get a list of crap I've bought on Amazon and Aliexpress.
setquk··on Microsoft’s HoloLens 2: a $3,500 mixed-reality headset for the factory
They had swords that did that. Then they found out that guns had higher lethality with lower risk to the attacker (another primary metric). Collateral wasn't much of a problem back then. No one gave a shit.
setquk··on Microsoft’s HoloLens 2: a $3,500 mixed-reality headset for the factory
No that's not quite right.

Lethality is the effectiveness of desired outcome. Was the target eliminated?

Collateral is the side effects of the desired outcome. Was anyone or anything else eliminated?

They are two different metrics. Consider two contrasting analogies which break your understanding:

Ballistic missile: high lethality, high collateral probability.

Polonium tea: high lethality, low collateral probability.

About 20 years ago, I was working in the defence sector, on guidance systems, as an engineer. Sat through many a powerpoint about how collateral could be marketed away. Turns out they won that battle eventually...

Incidentally I bailed out when I saw what a fucking mess of a world I was creating.
