sethish··on Has Django become a pay-for-features framework?
The migrations project was a re-write, not an integration with South. Common misconception, but the new migrations implementation is actually better than South's.
sethish··on Okay, Feminism, It’s Time We Had a Talk About Empathy
Yes, in my assessment, and in the assessment of female developers I have spoken with, women are being driven out of the tech community. Why do you think that it is a vocal minority?
sethish··on Vim: Spacebar as leader key, CapsLock as Esc
I've been using this since [~2010](https://github.com/sethwoodworth/dotfiles/commit/801f4a7163d...). I highly recommend leader as space.
sethish··on An understated job advertisement
Are you actually asking me why I consider Mike Krahulik despicable? If you are not aware of the issues surrounding him, I am happy to link you to some of the better articles.

If you are aware of the controversy and are baiting me, I am not interested.

sethish··on An understated job advertisement
I came to make a snarky comment about the job requiring you to be ok with working with Mike Krahulik, who I consider despicable. But their job posting does the job for me:

> We’re terrible at work-life balance. Although work is pretty much your life, we do our absolute best to make sure that work is as awesome as possible so you at least enjoy each and every day here.

*Edit: Originally reversed the author's pen names. Now using real name.

sethish··on Django 1.6 released
I love vanilla-views. I would like to see the documentation expanded to discuss things that the django docs discuss: decorators for instance.
sethish··on HN: What's the coolest new tech that isn't popular now but will be in a year?
No offense, but I have the opposite opinion on every point you mentioned.

Well, google glass will catalyze something interesting, but it won't be in the next year, or maybe next 5 years. But I do think that ergonomic wearable technology is a meaningful and reasonable extension of the smart phone revolution.

This is why I think the smart watch (while not great yet) is a good step forward. The ergonomics of taking my fragile and slippery phone out of a pocket to check the time or to check my message count isn't ideal. Putting that notification display on my body is better.

I have a low confidence in Ubuntu accomplishing anything given the quality of the software they have produced. Their NIH sentiments of late (MIR vs Wayland, Unity vs Gnome-shell) are troubling. Historically, Ubuntu has produced relatively little software on their own, building instead on Debian and the rest of the open source community (which is awesome!) but now they are migrating towards a desktop & mobile platform where they build all of the software in-house. Further, they require copyright assignment from contributors who want to work on their software, which has to limit willing contributors.

sethish··on Show HN: An Etherpad clone in Node.js and Socket.io
Etherpad is open source already. As is EtherpadLite (EPL), its node.js rewrite.
sethish··on Aaron Swartz Documentary – The Internet's Own Boy
> we have decided in the spirit of open access to release the film digitally through a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License

I do not believe that Aaron would have agreed with the use of this non-freeculture license.

sethish··on tmux 1.8 Released
> * Resizing panes will now reflow the text inside them.

This is all I needed to know to upgrade.

sethish··on Google Reader shutting down
It's worse than that. The google plus era redesign of all google sites ate up a massive fraction of the vertical space in Google Reader. And some social sharing features that made google reader an awesome place, were disabled in favor of sharing via google plus.
sethish··on Google Reader shutting down
Thank you. I've tried newsblur, but I just hadn't had the impetus to switch until now.

sethish··on Why are scans of Shakespeare's works locked behind academic paywalls?
Yes and no. You may take whatever technological steps you want to restrict someone's ability to copy the work. But you can't use copyright via the legal system to stop copying.
sethish··on Why are scans of Shakespeare's works locked behind academic paywalls?
I wasn't trying to make a moral argument, I was pointing out the current state of US and UK law, as it wasn't mentioned in the original article.

But lets discuss the moral implications. On what moral foundation do you base your statement? What example cases would your supposition provide the greater societal good?

sethish··on Why are scans of Shakespeare's works locked behind academic paywalls?
What you are referring to is known as 'sweat of brow' copyright. The US rejected this doctrine in the supreme court case Feist v. Rural Telephone Service. The UK also rejects this doctrine under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

So no, these scans are not the rightful property of whoever took the trouble to scan them.

sethish··on Fedora 18 "Spherical Cow" released
Examples? The only things I have to compile are python packages with c-extensions and the occasional small daemon like xcape.
sethish··on Fedora 18 "Spherical Cow" released
This was precisely what I was looking for before I upgraded to 3.6, thank you. I'm worried about switching to 3.6 now, I've invested a lot of time and energy making gnome-shell_3.4 usable for me. This sounds like it breaks a lot.
sethish··on AaronSW may have left everything to Givewell, an efficient meta-charity
Aaron has had a very expensive federal court battle. It may be that he still had leftover money from the sale of reddit, but Lessig's blog on the subject suggested financial troubles. Lets remain silent on this topic at the moment, unless this turns out not to be the case.
sethish··on St: Simple terminal implementation for X
That doesn't work for me on Fedora 17 or Ubuntu 12.04
sethish··on Requests, Python HTTP for Humans, reached v1.0
It's a major revision number change, that's the only time to do such a major api change.
sethish··on Ask HN: Know of a hacker in Cambridge or Boston who wants a bookstore?
I'm part of the p.irateship hackerspace, and we're just down the street from Lorem Ipsum on Somerville Ave. I would like to talk about a few different possibilities with you. My email is seth at sethish.com
sethish··on GTK Javascript Tutorial
Can someone explain to me why I would build an application in GTK(+) verses html? Given the availability of webkit bindings available for most languages, why wouldn't I call a webkit html rendering area and create my application in there? Is it to take advantage of system-wide styling?
sethish··on MS open-sources Reactive Extensions
Released under the Apache license 2.0 [1]. I checked because sometimes MS releases code that can only be run on Windows/Azure and calls it Open Source but doesn't meet the OSI definition.

sethish··on How To Use The HTML5 Notification API
I read this as "Non-fiction API" and got really excited. Alas, I guess I'll just have to keep working on that one. https://gitenberg.github.com

sethish··on Source Code Pro (monospaced Source Sans), released open source by Adobe
I just tried it out, and while it's not a bad font, I find it to be less scannable than Ubuntu Mono at similar font sizes.
sethish··on I Am Worried About The Future Of Python
Really? Because I couldn't get the Ubuntu package or the one from pip to work. And the last article on HN that mentioned it has the author having to install it from a bundle on the pygame site, which is also what I ended up doing before moving on.
sethish··on The Best Vim Configuration/Plugins Collection I've seen
I love seeing vim configs as much as the next guy, but pulling someone else's entire config like this is like wearing a custom suit tailored for someone else.
sethish··on Open Dyslexic - Dyslexia Fonts
I opened a feature request issue on their github about it. https://github.com/antijingoist/open-dyslexic/issues/6
