sesutton··on Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies (BEZOS) Act
Efficient in terms of administration. There's already a minimum wage so simply increasing it shouldn't require a lot of new bureaucracy like this would and achieve the same effect.
sesutton··on Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies (BEZOS) Act
It seems like it would be far more efficient to just raise the minimum wage. But I guess that doesn't have a clever acronym.
sesutton··on A Japanese cyber-security expert who defended basic decency was stabbed to death
>Should he Okamoto have been more careful? That depends on whether you think criticism of an internet troll ever merits a death sentence.

This is a weird false dichotomy. Its possible to think someone should be more careful and still not think they deserve to die. If I saw someone texting while driving I'd tell them to be more careful but not think they deserved to die.

sesutton··on Office 365 is being completely rewritten in JavaScript
The tweet mentions Visual Studio Code which uses Typescript.
sesutton··on Macron Vowed to Make France a ‘Startup Nation.’ Is It Getting There?
Kidnapping is kidnapping no matter how nice the the kidnappers are.
sesutton··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
No need to exclude most cities that aren't NYC or SF.
sesutton··on Stack Overflow Isn’t Very Welcoming – It’s Time for That to Change
I often come across questions that are closed as being duplicates but are different in some important way that whoever closed it obviously doesn't understand.
sesutton··on Uncontrollability of a bricycle (2014) [video]
The escape velocity of Deimos is only 20 km/h (~12 mph) but I'm not sure how well running would work in such low gravity.
sesutton··on 1.1.1.1: Fast, privacy-first consumer DNS service
I just get connection refused.
sesutton··on 1.1.1.1: Fast, privacy-first consumer DNS service
I think AT&T's fiber modems are using 1.1.1.1. I'm getting < 1ms ping times and according to Cloudflare's website there's no data center close enough to me for that to be possible without violating the speed of light.
sesutton··on Google starts blocking “uncertified” Android devices from logging in
Is it possible to deactivate old IDs?
sesutton··on Theranos, CEO Holmes, and Former President Balwani Charged with Fraud
Your timeline is off. The show was ordered several months before the company went bankrupt.
sesutton··on Crypto Zealots
From reading a few of Anthony Rutkowski's other screeds against end-to-end encryption I got the impression he might be a shill for some middlebox vendor. Did some digging and turns out he is an executive at Yaana which is a company that does exactly the kind of work that TLS 1.3 is trying to frustrate (credit to HN user Animats [1]).

>"Yaana is a leading global provider of a wide range of intelligent compliance solutions including lawful interception, accurate data retention, big-data search & disclosure, advanced security and application specific analytics."

That he thinks his unhinged writing style might be persuasive to anyone is baffling to me.

sesutton··on Don't use VPN services
I have much higher trust in my VPN than my ISP, which used to make you pay more if you didn't want to be spied on (AT&T).

It also stops them from sending me copyright notices which is a verifiable service.

sesutton··on Maintaining code quality when nobody cares
I suppose it is for webdev. I regularly work on C code that's nearly as old as I am.
sesutton··on Escaping Data from Faraday-Caged, Air-Gapped Computers via Magnetic Fields
> I kind of wonder what they spent all that time doing.

Putting tape over all their LEDs?

sesutton··on Nest to join forces with Google’s hardware team
Apparently not.

>Nest's brand, known for the internet-connected thermostat it created in 2011, isn't going anywhere, Osterloh and Fawaz say.

sesutton··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
Not a lawyer, but making false representations about what you're selling (i.e. that Tether is backed by US dollars) is almost certainly fraud.
sesutton··on An Amazon Order Might Lock You Out of Trusted Traveler Programs
>how long does the interview take

Mine took 5 minutes at most. The real inconvenience was the closest place to do the interview was a 3 hour drive. YMMV but anything I can do to spend less time in an airport is worth it to me.

sesutton··on Monthly Amazon Prime membership fees are about to increase
Prime shipping is 3-7 business days for Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico. So 5-7 days is within what they promise.

sesutton··on The screen that set off the ballistic missile alert on Saturday
>Having to type out YES or some phrase is a fairly common "Are you really sure you want to do this??" sort of thing.

This should also only be used for the real alerts and not the drills/tests otherwise you're training users to blindly type YES.

sesutton··on Julian Assange's stay in London embassy untenable, says Ecuador
They probably don't want to destroy diplomatic relations with the UK. The UK could also have just expelled the entire Argentinian embassy as well.
sesutton··on A letter about Google AMP
> Thing is, those awful, intrusive ads pay more money than AMP pages do. So I wouldn't assume that other publishers will appear, or that authors will be able to make enough to continue writing.

If my only two options are awful intrusive ads or no content, then I'd choose no content.

sesutton··on Comparing C and C++ usage and performance with a real world project
The aside about Rust is a total straw man. Obviously no one with even a modicum of knowledge of programming languages would think Rust is the only memory safe language. Googling the supposed quote also turns up no results but this post.
sesutton··on Why We Chose Typescript
You don't have to add types to start using a new library or web extension. At most you have to add 'declare var foo: any;' or cast a builtin to any if the type declaration doesn't have the property you need. Typesript always lets you use the any type as an escape hatch if you don't have types.
sesutton··on Rust your ARM microcontroller
Looks dead. No commits for almost 2 years.
sesutton··on Amazon to hand over Echo audio from alleged murder after defendant consents
>If you're running things yourself and control the encryption keys required to access your data, then your service provider can't be compelled to release your data as it's not possible

The court can just hold you in contempt until you do[1]. They also probably won't buy "I forgot".

sesutton··on HSTS Preload lists cause Chromium to think http://google/ is a valid domain
It turns out it was my DNS settings. It was trying to lookup ai.company-name.com without the period.
sesutton··on HSTS Preload lists cause Chromium to think http://google/ is a valid domain
It definitely works http://ai.

The period needs to be part of the URL at least for Chrome but HN isn't rendering it as part of the link.

>Does anyone know whether the Supreme Court has provided any clarification about whether the amended rules purport to allow American officials to search computers in foreign countries? Or whether the Justice Department has indicated how it will interpret the new rules?

Microsoft's attempt to quash a warrant forcing it to turn over emails stored in Ireland seems relevant. The last I can find the Second Circuit ruled in Microsoft's favor.

This[0] article talks about the case it's effect on Rule 41.
