selvan··on Dear Startups: Here’s How to Stay Alive
During late nineties, my startup was providing technology consulting/development service to other dot-com startups. Demand for our consulting service was so high that our company resort to auction kind of process to select customers. Then dot-com bust happened, 97% of our customers had gone out of business, quickly, very quickly. Obviously, our company fortunes dwindled and never recovered from that.
selvan··on Zenefits Software Helped Brokers Cheat On Licensing Process
Issue you are talking here seems to be about pushing software with a critical bug (a logical mistake by the developer). This issue looks to me as a test scenario that wasn't covered before. I guess these kind of issue could happen at anywhere else too, irrespective of their working (hacking) culture.
selvan··on Parker Conrad Steps Down as Zenefits CEO
Growth of Zenefits is a dream for many entrepreneurs. Instead of working with legacy compliance related issues, Parker would have chosen to deal with them latter, to focus on the growth. Parker would have driven by excitement of hyper growth. If he had chosen to work with compliance related stuff, not sure they would have gotten this far, this quickly. Is the compliance issue a mistake (or) Is it a crime?. If compliance issue is a crime, did he even aware of that?.
selvan··on Introducing d3-scale

selvan··on Mozilla Will Stop Developing and Selling Firefox OS Smartphones
FFxOS kernel is a fork of android kernal, but optimized to run on small memory footprint (128 MB RAM). Its speed on 128 MB RAM devices is commendable. Javascript is the only and primary development language for FFxOS & we get to access all hardware devices (Bluetooth, wifi, camera, etc ) via Javascript.
selvan··on We have C++14
C++ is suitable for development of cross mobile applications , since both iOS and Android tool chain has support for C++.
selvan··on Show HN: Paperstencil – cross between word processor and web form

selvan··on Show HN: Paperstencil – cross between word processor and web form

selvan··on Apple Literally Stole my Thunder
What was the chance of FFx browser winning the browser race, when more than 95% computers already had IE pre-installed?

With FFxOS, web designer and developers can leverage their web design & development skills. All system calls are exposed via javascript API (aka open Web APIs). See more details here (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Firefox_OS)

selvan··on They Acquire, Acquire, Acquire While We Build, Build, Build
Are n't many famous products (Android, Maps, Docs etc) of google are acquired rather than built?. What you think might work for you, may not work for others. Every organization have to figure out what will work best for their customers, by themselves.
selvan··on EmberJS Confuses Me
I tried Emberjs and Angularjs recently, as both framework offered two-way binding between view & model, at client side.

Angularjs was easy to pickup and I have completed what I wanted to do in about half a day, except one issue, angularjs template rendering is DOM driven. I wanted server-side templates, hence I have to boot phantomjs at server-side. I didn't quite like booting phantomjs for server-side templates.

Since Emberjs offered, handlebar based templates, I was happy that I could render my templates at server-side. So tried emberjs, it took about 3 days, to get it done. Many out dated tutorials & documents spread across internet about older versions of Emberjs. Documentation at emberjs.com is minimal and not helpful. I started looking at source code of discourse.org and try to understand how they used ember. I felt the power of emberjs when I needed complete control of context and rendering of nested templates. It was real beauty.

selvan··on How one man escaped from a North Korean prison camp
There is a say in my language "Birds born in a cage too have wings". Sometimes its hard for me to digest how a society that has 99% literacy rate, could continue living like this, under NK regime.
selvan··on CryptoSeal (YC S11) Offers VPN As A Service
Came across Ciphergraph (http://www.ciphergraph.com/) at Microsoft accelerator demo day on Jan 11th (http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/accelerator/Accelerator_compa...).They offer solutions in cloud security. Their VPN offering looks similar to CryptoSeal. Good that consumers have more choice in this space.
selvan··on 2D Game Art for Programmers
When you look at arts explained in the tutorial, objects are getting their shape from simple square, rectangles & circles. It is easy to comprehend.

In your case, even not many programmers would understand whats SDL.

Why shouldn't be writing C++ game programming or operating system, easy to comprehend for Artists?. If we had made writing OS easy for Artists, OS landscape would be much different than whats today.

selvan··on How to Get Startup Ideas
Generate ideas to solve a problem. If you have 'n' ideas to solve a problem, it is n x 1 complexity.

Issue with using ideas as your problem is that you have to find actual problem first, then solution next. 'm' ideas as your problem and another 'n' ideas for each problem, it is m x n complexity.

Use lean principles to find a solution to a problem that you understood well.

selvan··on How anti-competitive lawsuits by incumbents are killing early stage startups
"At a quick glance, I could have easily mistaken this site for something built out of Fab. If I were Fab, I feel I would be angry and want them to stop copying my work directly." -- If someone built competing search engine with a text box & search button, would you be confusing it with Google ?. Shouldn't people knowledge enough to differentiate & recognize brands by quality of service offered by them?. There are many clones of Instagram, Groupon, Airbnb. Systrom of Instagram told techcrunch,

"There might be 10 clones here, [but] there are also 20 clones from the United States right? You know, being copied is something that I think that every successful company will go through. Our biggest defensible asset really is our community, and I think that’s the thing that you’re not going to find on any of these replicas." (http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/06/instagrams-kevin-systrom-on...)

and Instagram didn't sue their clones !!.
