seltzered_··on Firefox will have an option to disable all AI features
On a different tack, I feel like I went out of my way to use Firefox (and Firefox Focus) on iOS and was thankful they had them during a time where everything had to use the safari renderer. IIRC Firefox Focus even had an ad-block extension that worked on safari
seltzered_··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
The F-150 Lightning Pro trim is the closest thing to this, and aside from the first year generally has only sold to fleets.

Theres also the Chevy Silverado EV WT trim which is a similar base model trim, but with the huge heavy battery its paired with it's still an expensive truck.

seltzered_··on South Korea – A cautionary tale for the rest of humanity
Overpopulation is still a concern when considering biodiversity, groundwater loss, etc.

The latest UNEP report includes it - see page 37 from https://www.unep.org/resources/global-environment-outlook-7 -> https://wedocs.unep.org/rest/api/core/bitstreams/902187bf-ea...

"Among the major global environmental crises – climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation, and pollution and waste – population growth is most evidently a key factor in biodiversity decline. This is largely due to increased demand for food production, which leads to agricultural expansion and land degradation (Cafaro, Hansson and Götmark 2022). As the population grows and consumption rises, fewer resources and less habitat are available for non-human species (Crist 2019). Overpopulation occurs when the total human population multiplied by per capita consumption surpasses the capacity of sustainable ecosystems and resources. Although the global human population continues to grow, per capita consumption is increasing at a faster rate. To the extent that people are disrupting natural habitats and degrading ecosystem services for future generations, despite regional heterogeneity, some research suggests that most of the world’s nations may be considered overpopulated (Lianos and Pseiridis 2016; Tucker 2019)"

Specifically going back to 70s overpopulation concerns, thing shifted with the Green Revolution / Norman Borlaug but it came at the cost of reducing groundwater supply and reducing agricultural diversity. See 'The Globalization of Wheat' and https://climatewaterproject.substack.com/p/groundwater-and-c...

Whoops, I replied to the wrong subcomment.
seltzered_··on UniFi 5G
Why cant an android phone with ethernet tethering to a router suffice?

I've done this using an android phone, usb-c hub w/ethernet nic, and and edgerouter lite before.

The biggest missing piece i see is the option for an external antenna.

seltzered_··on Ask HN: Hearing aid wearers, what's hot?
An elaboration on how complicated call handling can be with hearing aids (and how I wanted AirPods-like behavior): I assisted someone with purchasing hearing aids a year ago, and we first had a pair of Philips and returned them within a few months because they only worked with iPhone for supporting phone calls with the microphone on the hearing aids themselves, for Android it didnt work. Even the next generation Philips 9050 that supported Auracast didnt support this.

We ended up with Phonaks rebranded as Sennheisers. The audio quality during calls may not be as clear as a separate mic (what i believe you refer to as oticon), but from a user experience its nice to not have to fish out your phone to answer a call or wonder why you can hear the other person but they cant hear you.

Note that my complaint here is specific to Android support.

seltzered_··on Discontinuation of ARM Notebook with Snapdragon X Elite SoC
In addition to the other comments, its worth noting macOS started adding developer documentation around energy efficiency, quality of service prioritization, etc. (along with support within its OS) around 2015-2016 when the first fanless usb-c macbook came out: https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/Pe...

Think I'm arguing its both things where the OS itself can optimize things for battery life along with instilling awareness and API support for it so developers can consider it too.

seltzered_··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
"On Thursday, a Skagit County Superior Court judge ruled that pictures taken by Flock cameras in the cities of Sedro-Woolley and Stanwood qualify as public records, and therefore must be released as required by the state’s Public Records Act, court records show."

This video by Tom Lehto talks more about that court case that illustrates citizens can legally do FOIA requests for traffic cameras (e.g. Flock): https://youtu.be/1vQn4MWBln0

seltzered_··on Why are hyperlinks blue? (2021)
The Mozilla article does reference the Hyperties system Ben Schneiderman worked on, linking to https://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/hyperties/ with the following comment:

" This may be an ancestor of our blue hyperlink we know and love today, but I do not believe that this is the first instance of the blue hyperlink since this color is cyan, and not dark blue."

seltzered_··on Why are hyperlinks blue? (2021)

Note that hyperlinks in hypercard weren't blue necessarily, but the mouse cursor did change to indicate it was clickable.

seltzered_··on Ask HN: What's a good 3D Printer for sub $1000?
> Need to be able to print with more durable, temperature/chemical resistant materials such as PC/Nylon/ABS or infused materials.

I would double check what kind of air filtration setup you want. In the voron/sovol space there's the StealthMax filter system kit which is going to add on a couple hundred bucks at least.

As others said, you could consider a sovol sv08.

Another option is a used voron 2.4 or trident to meet your budget. My regret in going down the new printer rabbit hole was not waiting a couple months and checking used listing because theres usually a used printer that comes up, sometimes saving you quite a bit of money and assembly time.

The other factor to consider is you ever plan on having any expansions requiring a better MCU or additional motors. The sovol is a more 'integrated' electronics design so you'd need to possibly replace it if wanting to do certain mods later.

seltzered_··on I bought the cheapest EV, a used Nissan Leaf
The youtube channel 'State of Charge' has a number of videos talking about cheap connectors and/or lower spec connectors catching fire. Happens even on setups where people had a dedicated level 2 ev charger outlet (NEMA 14-50 , aka dryer outlet) but the installer used a connector not rated for enough current. See https://youtu.be/fzgxKChqjtc to start.

One needs to do one or possibly a combination of:

- Set the pin setting on a home charger for a lower current output. Theres also portable chargers with programmable current limiting, which I find more flexible.

- Replace with a better outlet/wiring setup. Many advocate for a hardwired setup over using an outlet.

seltzered_··on De minimis exemption ends
Hi Keith, i met you 13-14 years ago in the austin startup weekend / coworking space.

I'm happy if there's an environmental improvement from this (never bought from the stores you mentioned), but a counterpoint may be in how all this impacts those trying to operate repair shops, labs, and teach science. Bunnie Huang had some arguments on tariffs back in 2018: https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/2018/new-us-tariffs-are-a...

There were some arguments from repair youtuber Louis Rossmann also from a few months ago: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xR2_eqNL604&pp=ygUWbG91aXMgcm9...

seltzered_··on Show HN: I spent 6 years building a ridiculous wooden pixel display
Very neat to see! I've been wanting to make one for ~15 years, one approach to making one would be inspired by a wooden binary counter where each 'pixel' has a gravity latch that rolls out when on one side and triggers a flip for the next adjacent pixel: https://youtu.be/zELAfmp3fXY

seltzered_··on USB-C for Lightning iPhones
The divide generally is that android phones with headphone jacks as of 2025 generally dont have 5G ultrawideband support* . And there are some split-out dangles which offer a jack and usb-c, but they've sorta had annoying quirks in my experience (the CableCreation one is less terrible in my experience). One could design a case around one of these dangles, though it's add some bulk and the dangle quirks mean you sometimes need to disconnect it from the phone.

* - supposedly the Sony xperia pro (2020) might be the rare exception to this rule.

seltzered_··on USB-C for Lightning iPhones

(Relatedly, back in 2017 eric migicovsky of pebble tried to make a usb-c iPhone case that also charged airpods: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/581404323/podcase-batte... )
