Haha reminds me of the postal worker hinting that a lot of welfare cheques go to some affluent neighborhood in Vancouver. The business owns the house and the Lexus!
It just dawned on me that LLM use is a lot more measurable then "the rockstar engineer spent a week bouncing their favorite nerf ball off the wall all week and then the solution came to them" and the business side always loves to measure productivity metrics etc. As someone who's worked for mom and pop and big corporate the stats spook me, or if they're available to the worker I find them more distracting and encourage gaming the stats then being productive or humane to your co-workers.
Maybe one problem is the time between prompts, much like going to get a coffee when you start a big build, now it's filling time between prompts (plus the build), which can be any number of distracting rabbit holes (the internet is a big place) the split context feels exhausting to me.
Yeah terriers are the way to go, my cats will only take on wayward juvenile rats, full size rats are more like potential cuddle warmth for the cats! I've witnessed rats stalk and kill pigeons, from a famers context the only good rat is a dead rat. They make awesome pets though, so a lot of mixed feelings for me.
Government contracts, size and momentum, they're pretty famous for being ruthless on the upsell and counting licenses very carefully. They use their size to absorb other entities (like people soft who let the FBI's data go missing onto the dark web just recently [1]) they all uses databases and need datacenters. The government needs to manage big sets of data for whatever reason, Oracle is essential to that mission, bingo-bango too big to fail!

One recent example of a scapegoat https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49806430 people are still to blame, "the dog ate my homework" is a fine enough excuse for a second chance to learn, it's nowhere near enough of an excuse for death and destruction.
I find some freeze dried noodles and sauce in a mylar pouch are amazing after a long alpine hike, same with music; you have some luminous time in your life and the music you discovered around this time stays with you. God speed to your sandwich journey!
We also inverted the food pyramid recently since the whole thing reeked of big sugar/grain lobby, it can take a while for research to percolate above propoganda, and I'm not above suspecting the new pyramid of having its bias'
Here's my personal benchmark on this public site. Anecdote of 1.
Does posting links to these two videos related to health care decisions that were officially approved or denied to people. Get this post... Unalived?
Maybe I'm being naive, but as someone who's spent a lot of time capturing and reading PCAP files, 40GB/s worth of mirror is gonzo nuts! You may already be looking for a needle in a haystack, but this time the haystack is 1/60th of the entire bandwidth of the internet in the year 2000!
I think that's wrong as well, you can't achieve "regulatory self-capture" you need lobbying and insiders, and a government to get there, at least from my primative uninformed view.
There's the dichotomy of the walled garden, how to minimize scraping/bots/inauthentic amplification etc. Is a town square a town square if you can't hear what's going on from the public lawn on the edge of the square? I feel like HN does a better job, and the ecosystem of external views, LLM/human summary, HN search etc. Is quite exciting! but the scale between the two is one factor and the moderation we accept here also comes with a constraint on topics discussed and restrictions on speech (tradeoffs that I feel are worth it in our context here) So worlds apart and yet adjacent!
Oh my gosh, while I may have heard of 9front in passing I had a little look today and it's super cool! also shithub what an amazing alternative forge, it feels like one of those days when I'm part of the 10,000!
I never dug into the failure, but I once had a ZFS get to a state where it would crash the kernel on mount, I was able to mount it with checks turned off an recover what was important, but it was a spooky experience. I live on the bleeding edge of file systems for my desktop, I was on reiser4 back when that was fresh, I daily drive bcachefs (it's been great!) Mostly I've been lucky, I don't usually keep an openbsd system around, but I love FreeBSD and I'll give OpenBSD a try with GEFS for sure!
I once had to write some middleware for some warehouses based of an erp/crm subsidiary of the megacorp that rhymes with whoracle, the documentation was sparse specifically for the field I needed to modify, and once I got it working I saved 40MB of memory per PHP process by nuking the client side validator, fun times! The thrill of cobbling that together started me down the dark path to working for an API gateway appliance company, the darkness was immeasurable.
A quick search showed me Adderal reduces narcissitic traits and increases empathy (yay) and roughly the same search but for meth shows lower empathy and increases aggression. I'm sure there are vast differences in the compounds and the dosing size. There's also a gulf between science committed to "adderall is good" and science asking "why meth bad?" Maybe when cartels fund open science we'll have more balance!?!
I'd say this thread is groping for a reason C suite can trend towards being narcissistic or psychotic. I'm sure there's a lot of pressure, and having to make a decision to reduce staff, or build a technology that will make jobs across industries redundant, and the broad effects that has on people's lives could lead to a numbness to those branches of empathy. I've personally known people that moderate their state multiple times a day, stratigizing what street or pharmaceutical drug to take to help them get something done, or to chill out, or be trippy up down or sideways, and they have the bladder issues that go with some of those drug choices to boot. I've known some who take ketamine all day and make code that looks like art and runs like a dream. I don't endorse the method, but I've seen it entwined with logic and beauty!
I think the implication here is that these drugs while adding focus also alter other personality traits and can lead to dark places. Stopping amphetamines is regularly painted as a traumatic experience. Here's some examples:
- An old roommate of mine talking about the agressive mental state as side effects of her ADHD meds.
- Regular use in the military, likely providing some buffer for the remorse and trauma of taking life or losing comrades, or precluding moral objection to bombing the civilian target etc.
Well you can go in the direction of Cory Doctorow's Attack Surface where self driving cars are hacked to attack people, or openBSD is the OS of self driving cars and crime only receives placid self driven transport from the nice self driving cars and the proceeds and weapons of crime are carried in a way to avoid the scrutiny of the car's internal cameras. Or... there's so many cameras that crime evolves into micro-crime: the gamBean-o family resorts to fraudulent video surveillance attestation so they can build and use unauthorized micro drones to slip laxatives into the meals of their sworn enemies and rivals. It's fun to speculate :D
