seized··on Cloudflare outage – 24 hours now
I dont think PDX would get many tornados BUT the PNW has the joys of earthquakes that are overdue.
seized··on 999 Request Denied
I think if someone is looking at HTTP codes and extrapolating THAT from the response then there are other issues. At that point we might as well worry about people in Atlanta, GA not being able to call their mechanic if there's a 404 page.
seized··on Disc Brakes Took over the Cycling World. Here's Why That Was a Mistake
Disc brakes are absolutely better. No one laments the loss of drum brakes on cars, and apparently this person is the only one lamenting the loss of rim brakes.

He also seems to be a grouchy whiner about other things, like mountain bikes, suspension, hydraulic brakes, and even one finger braking...

Probably only rides alone.

seized··on Apple's $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans
I think they were just poorly designed. I'm kind to cables, exactly what you said is what I do. I've had maybe one Google USB-C cable fail on me across many phones and many years, cables in cars, etc. But I had two Lightning cables fail. And I only ever had one iPhone, used only for a year or two, only for work. The OE cables were just junk.
seized··on Apple's $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans
Considering how easily the charging cables would break and fall apart, I hope they didn't let that team near this one....
seized··on Cats Are Perfect. An Evolutionary Biologist Explains Why
That animal that needs to be looked after so they don't eat random turds off the ground....
seized··on Chromebook Plus
Eh, I have an 8GB Chromebook and I start to notice issues at around 100 open tabs, with the Linux VM running, Obsidian, and VS Code.

So you're a bit off.

seized··on Fairphone 4 with /e/OS by Murena now available at fairphone.com
And to be fair, those phones quickly got to the point where the flap over the USB port would break or not seal. And the back would get loose, because Samsung ruined the OS so it needed frequent battery removed reboots. And the finger print sensor wouldn't work if your finger had been near water in the last 12 hours. So it had constant warnings about the above.

The S8 I had was the low point of Android ownership for me.

seized··on ZFS for Dummies
Sure it does, they are great storage OSs. A NAS doesnt need GPUs.
seized··on Android 14 blocks all modification of system certificates, even as root?
... Who isn't banking on their phone? That's how I do it 90% of the time.
seized··on Android 14 blocks all modification of system certificates, even as root?
But you don't HAVE to do those things on Android.... My Pixel is exactly that, gets the job done without problems or fuss.
seized··on ZFS for Dummies
There is also Illumos/OpenIndiana/OmniOS, basically continuations of OpenSolaris. I have used OpenIndiana for many years and it's been dead reliable and stable.

There's quite a few "quality of life" differences like boot environments (boot into a pre upgraded OS state, even years old), built in SMB server with NFS v4 style ACLs, dtrace, built in snapshot scheduling and management, and Napp-It is an available web UI for management a la FreeNAS/TrueNAS.

It has a few differences, service management is quite different from other things, but overall very underrated as an OS I think.

Is the sandwich included this time?
seized··on Bitwarden Secrets Manager now generally available
BitWarden Secrets Manager is now GA.

Sadly no self hosting until the $12/month tier but still very exciting!

seized··on GNU Parallel, where have you been all my life?
And that's not really at all comparable to what Parallel can do.... Bash can't do that across thousands of cores on separate machines for example.
seized··on Learning async Rust with entirely too many web servers
The transition from spinning disks to SATA/SAS flash to NVMe.
seized··on Bad software destroyed my doctor's memory
Healthcare is it's own thing, what happens outside it software wise isn't always applicable to healthcare.

The system in question is electronic health records (EHR). These are vast systems, really the comparison is "SAP for medical records" as they typically handle scheduling, billing, coding, store reports, notes, results (blood tests, as the tip of the ice berg). The tie ins to other systems are complex. And all of it is critical, as in patient injury or death if sole things go wrong. And much of it can fall under various federal laws, HIPAA is just the start.

These are long lived systems, upgraded over time. Replacing one can be a multi year effort for even a small organization. So replacing one isn't done because a new shiny one exists. New entries face a long battle into the industry, and the needs of a family physician are very different from a hospital or large group of hospitals.

If you want an idea of the scale and scope, the NYC Health and Hospitals project for their Epic EHR ran $1 billion over budget. Might have been more that that.

seized··on Privacy friendly ESP32 smart doorbell with Home Assistant local integration
I wired the normal doorbell button to a Zooz ZEN17 (Zwave smart relay with additional inputs). That's paired with ZwaveJS which sends out MQTT messages on button pushes. That triggers Node-Red which pulls a screenshot off from separate front door security camera and sends that to my phone and the wives phone using Pushover.

Keep meaning to get around to Frigate for smarter alerts as well, for people detection.

Kids needing colouring pages are the sole reason I have a new Brother laser.
seized··on The Billionaire Who Controls Your Medical Records (2021)
That may be because when something like Epic or PACS (or other tier 1 systems, or the network/data center/power/etc) is down longer than X time the hospital will go into diversion, meaning as many ED patients as possible are diverted to a different nearby hospital.

And paper workflows can be fast in the moment but cause absolute chaos for cleaning up, reconciliation, and moving data between departments.

Source: Worked with many hospitals, including ones with Epic.

seized··on Cloudflare Registrar now supports .dev domains
Only Google sold them for a long time.
seized··on Cloudflare Registrar now supports .dev domains
I just transferred my one domain over, $17 at Google and $10.18 at Cloudflare.
seized··on Cloudflare Registrar now supports .dev domains
I'm sure I am not the only person waiting to move their .dev domain away from Google Domains now that it's shutting down.

seized··on Building and operating a pretty big storage system called S3
I did the latter, across usually about 4000+ CPUs. That got me a peak of 15 or so GB/sec read from one GCS bucket, writing to another.

But yeah if it's not something that can be paralleled then it sucks.

seized··on Building and operating a pretty big storage system called S3
The latency is higher so the key is parallelism... Which means you need more cores/hardware/VMs/pick your poison. New but same problem...

seized··on Parallel – shell tool for executing jobs in parallel using one or more computers
I've used it a bunch of times for some giant batch jobs across hundreds or thousands of cores... And I've found it easier to build a job file of the exact commands and redirect that into it.
