I thought this is what we wanted it? The ability to point at someone claim they're a harasser/suspicious and get them bagged and tagged? Have I missed the memo were that's not the modus operandi of recent efforts for combating harassment?
seivan··on Ask HN: What are some examples of beautiful software?
Grand central dispatch is so beautifully designed. Both its API and just general use. It clicked with me the first time it got introduced and I abandoned bothering with NSOperarion
seivan··on REM vs. EM – The Great Debate
REM was easier for me to keep track of and understand. But it didn't work for media/printer queries.
seivan··on Frameworks Don't Make Much Sense
There is a big difference between ActiveRecord pre and post Arel. Give it another go if you haven't seen Arel in action.
seivan··on Valley VCs Sit on Cash, Forcing Startups to Dial Back Ambition
You mean apart from their financial and personal incentives? No, not much else. I'm sorry, at some part you draw a line. My line is disparaging the clock that's not even right twice a day isn't considered ad hominem.

Same reason my source about racial discrimination isn't Stormfront, and my source about startups isn't Vox.

Also I wouldn't take what Breitbart has to say about sexist issues at face value either. I'm expecting you to be able to learn that soon enough, I mean you'd give me the same treatment if I shoved a bunch of Daily Mail articles at you. And rightly so.

seivan··on The New Mind Control – The internet has spawned subtle forms of influence
Then you can keep claiming your results are non-biased long after it stop being organic as these things tend to do with fresh people and their friends with same mindset. I've come to dismiss everything that claims to be neutral. DailyMail, Guardian, the sheets of toilet paper, all used for the same purpose.
seivan··on The New Mind Control – The internet has spawned subtle forms of influence
Just imagine what TV/"news papers" used to be and still is. I can see why many left wing extremists worked on TV as it can be easily used to shape people with no alternative source of info. Until that pesky internet came and along and with it a lower barrier to entry. Things have improved, even with Google.
seivan··on Valley VCs Sit on Cash, Forcing Startups to Dial Back Ambition
Those sources say more about your credibility than they do about Ubers. I think Uber actually relies on people like yourself, you have to understand that it's slowly harming your validity more than theirs.

To give you a comparison it's like those conspiracy theorists back in the days who claimed NSA was snooping on everyone and then later claimed the president is an Alien from planet Xenu.

seivan··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use Siri?
Yup. Use it figure out kcal on stuff, route directions home, set timers, delete/set alarms, dictate text messages as I run, set calendar events for stuff like laundry.

I use it on both my watch and phone.

Directions also work better if you put in addresses under work, home and friends so you don't need to spell out non-English addresses.

My personal favorite is setting reminders.

"Hey Siri... Remind me to call Chris when I leave home tomorrow morning".

It'll geofence the reminder to be in the morning when I get on the train. Amazing.

Don't forget currency conversion. "Convert 20 000 US dollars to Swedish Krona"

Sometimes I do quick math: "Two point one seven six percent of two point one two million"

seivan··on The secret life of a games programmer
My experience as well.
seivan··on Beginning Game Programming in C++
I guess the opposite of that (Without introducing editors) would be Cocos2d-x. You could still stay in C++ code-land but get everything out of the box (ECS, Memory management, scenes, etc)
seivan··on iOS dynamic type on the web
Good luck convincing designers to use this.

My parents can't use a few applications because of designers refusal. My dad literally had to change banks because some of the banks used too small fonts. So far none of them use dynamic type, but at least some have larger fonts.

seivan··on More Money Really Does Make Schools Better
This isn't true in Sweden. My school got most funds per student and still went downhill. iPads, expensive computes and it still can't increase graduate numbers.

At some point, culture matters.

seivan··on Ask HN: I'm taking 2 weeks off work to build a prototype. Any advice?
Be careful not to fall into the notion that you have unlimited time. Don't get obsessed with small details that take too much of your time.

You should work each day like you're going back to the office in 2 days.

seivan··on China Tries Its Hand at Pre-Crime
These wars and "plots" happened before the US even existed. Did the Americans time travel in order to create them or what am I missing here? How do you think religion spread in the past, peaceful missionaries?
seivan··on Poor Sleep Gives You the Munchies, Study Says
Yup. This is scary how I just saw this article. I've been up 4 days. Coffee and Coke (the sugar kind). Bit more than I could chew with what should have been a hard coded feature into a full blown lib. I can feel how my short term memory is down 50%.
seivan··on Why We Moved to React
NO! Don't use your collections indices as a key, that defeats the whole purpose. Your indices can change without content changing! You want to use item.id or something not as volatile as a collection index!
seivan··on Developing Our First iOS App with React Native
No one is doubting that you'll need people who know iOS and Android ecosystem. But React isn't just a wrapper over native views. It's a fundamentally different way to write up applications compared to the way you work your way around states and UI.
seivan··on Developing Our First iOS App with React Native
React is native. It's a JS interpreter on a separate queue rendering native UILabels and UIViews. I'd say the concept is far more superior to UIKit which disgusts me, and I've worked with for almost seven years now. I honestly think React is the future, but for now we can try to stick with MVVM and RxSwift ;-).

I think you're fundamentally not understanding how React (not just React-native) works.

seivan··on Developing Our First iOS App with React Native
React-Native pattern with delegates is passing down functionHandlers to childComponents that would trigger them.

Except Objective-C (and Swift) had protocol conformance. Though come to think of it TypeScript allows you define an interface for a Component, one of those attributes could be a function.

Not really getting away from it. ;-)

seivan··on Developing Our First iOS App with React Native
React-Native isn't just a JS-wrapper, you're trading away language safety features (e.g Swift) with features to help with transient state (React).

Of course you can mitigate that with RxSwift, but it only goes so far.

seivan··on Swift Ported to Android
Run some lists with images on them on iPhone 5. Anecdotal, and I am sure you can dig into metal to improve performance, but out of the box, it's kinda poor. I still like React and I'm hopeful React-Native will improve.
seivan··on Teletext in Europe
I learned to read by using Text-TV when I was three. Figured how to get subtitles for Swedish tv and that helped. Then I spent most of my time browsing all pages. I memorized the pages for the tv time schedule so I could find out when stuff like Spider-Man and Batman aired. Good times.
seivan··on How to stop functional programming
Be pragmatic, there's a higher chance that a developer has used said concept than the FRP mentioned above.

Funny you should mention that for loop as it's been removed from Swift 2.2 ;-)

seivan··on How to stop functional programming
I can understand that concepts like flatMap, merge, reduce and zip can be intimidating at first. It would help to explain what they are and how they work with smaller examples outside of project code base.

seivan··on The Seven Habits of Highly Depolarizing People
Tribalism of belief instead of skin tone might seem like an improvement. But that's because it might be easier to change belief under gun point that skin color. Though some might not even get that chance.

It's still tribalism. To answer your second question, yeah as a knee jerk reaction. I suspect republicans regardless of skin color distrust democrats regardless of skin color. Look how Ben Carson treated by Democratic voters.

seivan··on The Seven Habits of Highly Depolarizing People
Give it a chance. It was worth reading.
seivan··on The Seven Habits of Highly Depolarizing People
Well needed article. Trying to follow this more and more. Although it's getting harder.
seivan··on The Weird Global Appeal of Heavy Metal
In Flames post Come Clarity is no longer Metal. I hurt to.
seivan··on Announcing TypeScript 1.8
Woah! I love how little it takes to go from Swift to TypeScript in terms of context switching. That method declaration with generics is so nice looking.

I love TypeScript just wish it was easier to use with their libraries and editors. I know it's not as bad as previously but it's still a lot of work with Babel/webpack and etc.
