seisvelas··on Ask HN: Do you program in Basic?
The QBasic community is excellent and pretty active (peaked around 2008 or so, though). Check out http://www.petesqbsite.com/ to learn more.
seisvelas··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (June 2019)
Location: Mexico City

Remote: Gladly

Willing to Relocate: Yes

Technologies: Python (TensorFlow, Keras, Django); Javascript (Node, Express, React), C, x86 asm, AWS

Resume: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16SD9x7MS0o0FrivFVzPCZTOu...

I've worked for a few years as a Linux Systems Admin and later as a systems developer in Python and C. Lately I've moved into machine learning and data science, which is a blast.

seisvelas··on Pollen: the book is a program
Beautiful Racket is one of my favorite books in any genre.
seisvelas··on Show HN: My First (Useless but Successful) Neural Network
I know it's super basic, but if anyone has critiques of how it could be improved I'd be glad to hear!

I'm also very interested in small, tiny problems slightly harder than this that a total beginner like me could tackle.

seisvelas··on Things I Learnt from fast.ai v3
You know, I know web devs who went to university and bootcamps and understand what's happening at every level of the application as it runs, and they don't seem much better off than the tweens I knew who obsessed over their Neopets fansites. The only real differential I've noticed between learners is movitavion, and I think fast ai provides early successes and fun that lead to motivation to dig deeper.
seisvelas··on Ask HN: Was data science just hype?
Yep, that's why I make sure to set time aside for toy problems. Creating contrived problems can sometimes scratch that itch to use a certain technology that don't really fit into what I'm doing at work.
seisvelas··on If your website's full of assholes, it's your fault (2011)
This is a lovely comment, and now I'm super curious to see what the site is.
seisvelas··on Show HN: Write code using natural language
This seems more like a helpful glue between documentation and code than "write code using natural language". Nevertheless, very cool!
seisvelas··on A whirlwind tour of object-oriented code in F# (2012)
Racket is a fantastic language. It has a solid community of great engineers, can doesn't try to hard to build hype or become a fad. I'd like to see it acquire an industry niche somehow so it can flourish.
seisvelas··on Google HTML/CSS style guide suggests omitting head and body tags
It makes sense to me that if those tags are doing nothing, removing them is a legitimate micro optimization.
seisvelas··on Why Workers Without College Degrees Are Fleeing Big Cities
A very large portion of tradesmen have associates degrees. In fact, I often wonder if the tradesmen are artificially boosting the income statistics of degree holders in general.
seisvelas··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
What is the currency?
seisvelas··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
Perhaps developers now value privacy more on average than they did back then.
seisvelas··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
I have no money and a very shitty laptop, and thanks to Google Colab's free, hosted Jupyter Notebooks I'm having a blast learning Keras.

I'm not saying they're saints, but they've given me something free that's improved my life. Maybe it's ultimately greedy in the sense that later if I need a cloud platform I'll definitely use GCP. But I think that kind of mutualism is actually better in practice than altruism.

seisvelas··on City residents live with mental illness at higher rates than general population
All the cities I've lived in also have pretty significant substance abuse problems. According to this article,

https://drugabuse.com/country-vs-city-addictions-differ-says...

Rural people are more likely to abuse alcohol, whereas city dwellers are more likely to abuse hard drugs.

seisvelas··on The Law of Leaky Abstractions
> most modern compiled languages you can add strings and get a string, but strings are in fact immutable and can't be added without making an entirely new string and disposing of the original two.

In my mind, I add two strings like so:

https://gist.github.com/seisvelas/c11d200d0040a3686e47af0068...

That is, I realloc the first string to fit the second inside of it, then add the second string into the new space. But I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm posting this comment so someone can explain to me why my way is bad and why I should be creating a new string to put the others inside (which apparently is what everyone else does!)

seisvelas··on Ask HN: Is freelance web development still a viable path in 2019?
As a developer in Mexico, I can confirm. You aren't going to beat us on price alone
seisvelas··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (May 2019)
Location: Mexico City

Remote: Preferred

Willing to relocate: Yes

Technologies: Python, Javascript/Node, AWS, C, Linux (RHCSA cert), Racket

Résumé/CV: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alejo-alvarado/

Email: aalvarado@thinkful.com

Most of my work experience is developing APIs in Python, JS, and Racket. I also spent some time a systems programmer in C doing lots of low level stuff on Linux, and I got my start as a Linux sysadmin.

My ideal right now would be to work part time, remotely, doing anything in Python or Node. I have a pretty wide range of experience in terms of platforms and languages, all things adjacent to the aforementioned.

seisvelas··on Solving Riddles with Prolog and ES6 Generators (2014)
I want to check it out but all of the Google results are for Einstein's Riddle. What's the link?
seisvelas··on Show HN: Non-visual porn site for women
This is awesome! My only question: The Tell and Hear panels both have appealing designs, but the Read panel looks totally sad and hidden. No need to push people from Read, it's a great section!
seisvelas··on Show HN: Applying the Unix philosophy to neural networks
Ironically, I was only mildly interested in this before I read your comment and learned that it's in Scheme. Now I'm eager to check it out, haha.
seisvelas··on Fuchsia OS Introduction
>Sandboxes are unportable and strapped-on

I contribute to an open source project called Torsocks, which is part of the Tor Project, and this comment really resonated with me. Creating a syscall sandbox that works across even a few, generally similar POSIX-compliant OS's is ridiculous.

FreeBSD and MacOS for example have a very similar system interface. But sandboxing on FreeBSD is via pledge, and MacOS uses the App Sandbox. Linux uses seccomp.

It's a mess.

seisvelas··on Austin Is Building a Mini Silicon Valley
>The small retirement towns between them are now over-fucking-run by mommy vans.

I don't understand this. Are you upset that communities of retirees are being displaced by...moms? Not criticizing at all, just no idea what this sentence means or why "mommy-vans" are bad.

seisvelas··on Chelsea Manning jailed for contempt of court
Was there "coordination" aside from Democrats being angry that a lot of leaks over the best decade paint Hillary Clinton in a bad light? The left seemed pretty willing to hate on Clinton as the archetypal imperialistic neoliberal archvillain, until she became the nominee against Trump.

I'm reminded of this video from Rap the News that I recall seeing as typical of how the leftist internet thought of Hillary Clinton during the Obama era: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl4NlA97GeQ

When it was Bush's State Department being exposed committing war crimes, was Wikileaks coordinating with Gore and co?

seisvelas··on China bars millions from travel for 'social credit' offenses
Not arguing either way, but to answer

>Why should you be able to prevent others from saying true things about you?

The obvious reason is privacy. Misdeed is subjective and the aggressive broadcasting of supposed misdeeds can be a conformist beating stick. Literal truth is a low standard for determining whether something should be said. Personally, I think Buddha's heuristic is pretty useful:

When determining whether you should say something,

Is it kind? Is it necessary? Is it honest? Does it improve upon the silence?

seisvelas··on Functional Secret Santa
I read the description and README and I still don't understand what this does. Send text messages to your friends with their Secret Santa. So is their Secret Santa like a username or something? What am I not understanding?
seisvelas··on Assembly is too high level
Really enjoyed this series of articles showing hacks to micro optimize in a few architectures
seisvelas··on Show HN: My first recursive program in x86
Thanks for the encouragement, will do!
seisvelas··on Show HN: My first recursive program in x86
Probably not that impressive to anyone else, but I did it without looking at any examples of recursion in assembly because I wanted to try to figure out how it could be done by myself. Yay.
seisvelas··on Pictures from the Eastern Bloc in the 80s
Are you arguing that racial diversity is the reason Paris' metro is dirtier than Warsaw's?
