sega_sai··on IronGlass Brings Legendary Soviet Cinema Lenses to Mirrorless Cameras
Some bizarre obsession with 'Soviet'. Did they invent optics, that was since forgotten ?
sega_sai··on 1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History
It is a pretty good book, but when I got, I personally hoped for more finance in it. A large fraction of the book is devoted to people.
sega_sai··on Britain today generating 90%+ of electricity from renewables
This is Telegraph for you. The cost of electricity is not driven by green levies or net zero targets, but by gas prices, as gas is a backstop when all other sources are exhausted. Therefore electricity prices are pretty much tied to gas.
sega_sai··on Mystery jump in oil trading ahead of Trump post draws scrutiny
At this point, I would rather these people enrich themselves as long as they stop the war, but I am afraid they will continue doing both.
sega_sai··on Chrome DevTools MCP
I don't know if this just anecdotal random impression, but in a last week or two I had mostly good experience with Google cli. While previously I constantly complained about it. I have been using it together with codex, and I would not say that one is much better than another.

It is hard to say nowadays, when things change so quickly

sega_sai··on AI didn't simplify software engineering: It just made bad engineering easier
When I see this: "One of the longest-standing misconceptions about software development is that writing code is the difficult part of the job. It never was." I don't think I can take this seriously.

Sure, 'writing code' is not the difficult often, but when you have time constraints, 'writing code' becomes a limiting factor. And we all do not have infinite time in our hands.

So AI not only enables something you just could not afford doing in the past, but it also allows to spend more time of 'engineering', or even try multiple approaches, which would have been impossible before.

sega_sai··on Traffic from Russia to Cloudflare is 60% down from last year
I have a similar situation and Amnezia (either in WG mode or Xray mode) works well with a self-hosted server. Also SSH tunnel as proxy so far also works.
sega_sai··on OpenAI is walking away from expanding its Stargate data center with Oracle
The observatory is named in honour of Vera Rubin. That makes sense. The commercial company deciding to name their new generation of chips does not (at least to me).
sega_sai··on Oracle is building yesterday's data centers with tomorrow's debt
Would you want the commercial company use your name, or the name of your relative?
sega_sai··on OpenAI is walking away from expanding its Stargate data center with Oracle
Wow, I just saw in the article that NVIDIA called a new chip Vera Rubin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vera_Rubin, also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vera_C._Rubin_Observatory). How is it allowed for a commercial company to assign a name of a known person to a product ?
sega_sai··on Strike on girls' school that killed 150 in Iran 'likely' carried out by US
Good old victim blaming. Apparently the main issue is not that the country that started the war hit the school and killed 150 people, but where the school was placed.
sega_sai··on Google Workspace CLI
Interesting, but scary, given that this is not a google product. Who knows whether that breaks any TOS somehow.
sega_sai··on Government grant-funded research should not be published in for-profit journals
it is open access, but often 'golden' or 'diamond' OA, where the researcher has to pay few K$ for this.
sega_sai··on Government grant-funded research should not be published in for-profit journals
In astrophysics we now have Open Journal of Astrophysics that is basically an overlay on top of arxiv. https://astro.theoj.org/ It is now catching on with ~ 200 papers published last year, after some of the astro journals started to charge the Golden Open Access publishing fees. I think now people realize how crazy it is to pay for hosting a PDF and for sending your draft to a few referees without paying anything for their work.
sega_sai··on Claude's Cycles [pdf]
In some sense that is still correct, i.e. the words are taken from some probability distribution conditional on previous words, but the key point is that probability distribution is not just some sort of average across the internet set of word probabilities. In the end this probability distribution is really the whole point of intelligence. And I think the LLMs are learning those.
sega_sai··on AI is making junior devs useless
I recently read a similar discussion in the context of AI in science and PhD students. And the point the author was making that the goal of having PhD students is NOT to produce academic research, but to train people. I think the same idea applies here. Somebody still needs to train people, and the companies will probably need to ensure that they have resources for that, as there will not be enough senior people for all the tasks.
sega_sai··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
Do you think that he was killed because of human right violations? I do not think so. The current US administration does not seem very concerned with those.
sega_sai··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
I have no sympathy for Khamenei, but, if that is allowed we should not be surprised if Denmark prime minister is next?
sega_sai··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
The take home message from this is that the only way for any country to be secure is to have nuclear weapons.
sega_sai··on OpenAI raises $110B on $730B pre-money valuation
Okay, I can understand investment from SoftBank, and maybe somewhat from Amazon (if they plan to use OpenAI's models), but investment from NVidia who will then sell OpenAI the GPUs with X% markup doesn't make sense to me.
sega_sai··on Get free Claude max 20x for open-source maintainers
5000 stars. That's an interesting threshold. I've checked and astropy -- the main python module used by pretty much every python user in astrophysics has 5100 stars. I would guess almost no open source code in science would pass the threshold.

EDIT: Just another test, one of the most used codes in astro -- an ensemble Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo sampler https://github.com/dfm/emcee has 1600 stars. It just shows the 5000 stars is a bit PR, rather than a serious attempt to help open source.

sega_sai··on US orders diplomats to fight data sovereignty initiatives
That is useful information to pursue data sovereignty even more.
sega_sai··on Anthropic drops flagship safety pledge
I don't believe anthropic has shareholders either. It is not a public company
sega_sai··on 1Password pricing increasing up to 33% in March
The manage to find the money to sponsor an F1 team, so I don't think the money is the issue.

Also, if they'd increase things by 5%, or did yearly 2% increases or something like that, I'd be okay with that (to cover the inflation). But the 33% increase combined with the list of features I don't care about -- that's just taking users for granted. Thankfully I didn't start using passkeys, otherwise I'd be locked within 1p without ability to export them.

sega_sai··on 1Password pricing increasing up to 33% in March
I think 20/yr is low enough and much cheaper than 1p anyway, so it seems fine to me. I have already cancelled my yearly 1p password subscription and will use the next couple of months to get familiar with bitwarden before the full switch.
sega_sai··on 1Password pricing increasing up to 33% in March
I don't really want to deal with hosting, TBH. I was pretty happy to pay to 1password, but I don't want to be exploited... So I am fine to pay to bitwarden.
sega_sai··on 1Password pricing increasing up to 33% in March
The 33% increase (47.88/35.88) for the "features" I don't need is too much. I will be switching to Bitwarden.

I think if they increased the prices by 5% or something like that, I'd said fine, that >30% is simply not justified.

sega_sai··on Hey I almost got scammed by Google
I wonder how much of this crap will also leak into AI training data...
sega_sai··on AI makes you boring
For many applications boring is good. If you are writing a novel, you don't want boring, but if you're working piece of code, I don't think you want "exciting".
sega_sai··on US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere
I guess it will allow to access information unless it is about abortion or it is negative about DJT.

It is really a joke to pretend that current US cares about freedom of internet access, given all the attacks on free press it things like voice of America radio in the states.

I assume US will also provide a portal to Russian citizen if it is so eager to allow people to bypassing content bans (/s).
