seemslegit··on Show HN: TrashEmail – Telegram-based disposable mail service
> is reasonably privacy-friendly, more so than fb/whatsapp/etc

This is a harmfully misleading notion that we shouldn't be spreading. Without explicitly invoking "secret chats" which are not even available on desktop telegram is no different from skype and fb messenger and is categorically less secure than whatsapp.

seemslegit··on If Trump kicks out Twitter, there's always Germany
Don't forget the copyright infringement honeypots whose operators have a streamlined access to ISPs to obtain identities of the alleged infringers.

Also the legal obligation to have every website specify the legal street address of the entity behind it as well as the full name of the "managing director" in charge.

seemslegit··on If Trump kicks out Twitter, there's always Germany
It's not just the privacy, it also recognizes the right to protect one's reputation and has a much broader construction of defamation and libel than the US (although still not as broad as the UK), but the point is that there are no special liability protections for online services except maybe in the name of journalism and general public interest, also no DMCA - a copyright violation is a copyright violation and if your users commit it you're liable.
seemslegit··on If Trump kicks out Twitter, there's always Germany
God I love the dunning-kruger view of Germany as the last bastion of internet liberty, it's utterly wrong - Germany has so many laws restricting online speech that you (and the service hosting your content) can be sued just for mentioning someone by name in a disparaging context, nothing like the CDA 230 protections exists there in the first place.

Doesn't it seem odd to anyone that despite having some of the best hackers in the world come from it Germany has zero world-scale content platforms ?

seemslegit··on Translation from VC-Backed PR Jargon to English of Magic Leap CEO Statement
Very smart people might have been duped into investing alright, but it's not because they were duped to believe in the tech or the product, rather it was because they were duped to believe that a bigger sucker will come along as from their previous experience one usually did eventually.
seemslegit··on Hypermodern Python
Whether they are better or not is up to you to decide, but "focus on simplicity and minimalism" is not what's going on here.
seemslegit··on Hypermodern Python
> This article series is a guide to modern Python tooling with a focus on simplicity and minimalism

No it isn't, it introduces at least two external tools of questionable necessity - pyenv and poetry when python comes with venv and pip natively.

seemslegit··on Draft of Executive Order on Online Censorship [pdf]
That's a different piece of legislation
seemslegit··on Draft of Executive Order on Online Censorship [pdf]
Really seems far less harmful than EARNIT, not that it replaces it - in fact it could be a gambit to get the big web companies to play along with passing EARNIT
seemslegit··on Draft of Executive Order on Online Censorship [pdf]
Or they could stop editorializing their content.
seemslegit··on Draft of Executive Order on Online Censorship [pdf]
So what about this purported order establishes new censorship ? Surely censorship has not become synonymous with interfering with the right of online services to the moderate their content as they see fit ?
seemslegit··on Draft of Executive Order on Online Censorship [pdf]
It's one thing to believe the poster but why does the poster believe an anonymously sent "Executive order draft" and publish it ?
seemslegit··on Facebook executives shut down efforts to make the site less divisive
How dare they - that used to be the job of traditional media and entertainment.
seemslegit··on I've collected over 600 pitch decks
Should be enough to get a neural net to raise till round C or so.
seemslegit··on A Window onto an American Nightmare
That's true, but pretty tautological as far as being an explanation for homelessness goes, it is also true for every other place.
seemslegit··on Wikimedia enacts new standards to address harassment and promote inclusivity
> There's a significant subset of people that cry the loudest of censorship only when it comes to communities having a stance against racism, sexism and homophobia.

That's your own bias speaking here, HN is pretty vocal against all censorship or community hijacking efforts. It's just that in nine cases out of ten "a stance against racism, sexism and homophobia" is used performatively and in bad faith and few people here buy it or bother to pretend that they do.

seemslegit··on Wikimedia enacts new standards to address harassment and promote inclusivity
It is actually a very strong medicine, but good luck coordinating a critical mass of core contributors and moderators towards a single effort. Expect the new policies to have the "unacceptable" writeups also excluded from revision histories so that they could not be easily rehabilitated in competing forks.
seemslegit··on A Window onto an American Nightmare
The vast majority of the homeless are not such because the rent went up just above what they could previously afford but because they're unemployable and no one will rent a place to them usually due to a comibnation of substance abuse and mental illness, so they panhandle or do odd jobs and need to be in a place where there is a strong foot traffic of relatively well-off people and a thriving street economy, between those cities SF and NYC fit the bill the most and also have the most homeless-friendly laws and also most shelters, charities etc.
seemslegit··on Founder's Syndrome
Contrast and compare with the butt-hurt employee effect.
seemslegit··on Coronavirus: 'Baffling' observations from the front line
When your per-capita covid19 mortality rates are almost 200% of the US and almost 600% of Germany you need all the bafflement your citizens can buy.
seemslegit··on The Conspiracy Myth
Way too long to read so I'm gonna assume it says "government conspiracies are real, happen all the time because a conspiracy is just people working together towards some goal while keeping it a secret from other people and the only question is if your particular one is true or even remotely makes sense" and agree.
seemslegit··on MacOS Catalina: Slow by Design?
The slowness seems like the smallest concern here
seemslegit··on Jepsen Disputes MongoDB's Data Consistency Claims
"We found that due to these weak defaults, MongoDB’s causal sessions did not preserve causal consistency by default: users needed to specify both write and read concern majority (or higher) to actually get causal consistency. MongoDB closed the issue, saying it was working as designed, and updated their isolation documentation to note that even though MongoDB offers “causal consistency in client sessions”, that guarantee does not hold unless users take care to use both read and write concern majority. A detailed table now shows the properties offered by weaker read and write concerns."

That sounds like a valid redress, or am I missing something ?

seemslegit··on Dead Sea Scroll fragments thought to be blank reveal text
The text is "This scroll was intentionally left blank"
seemslegit··on Windows package manager does not permit opting out of telemetry
There is no new Microsoft - this is the "embrace, extend, extinguish" Microsoft of always, betting that the forkable nature of open source will not matter in practice, so far correctly.
seemslegit··on Backstabber's Knife Collection: A Review of Open Source Supply Chain Attacks
Only if by next you mean last and by 'major problem' you mean 'mostly ignored due to lack of tangible accountability for anyone involved'
seemslegit··on Show HN: Python package to collect normalized news from almost any website
Well the 'anyone else' part is wrong, someone has to provide the news.
seemslegit··on Signal PINs
Don't you wonder how they make or plan to make revenue or do you think they're in it for truth, justice and happiness of all mankind ?
seemslegit··on Show HN: Python package to collect normalized news from almost any website
I'm not sure how to parse the following sentence:

By newscatcherapi.com (this package is fully self-sufficient, you can just use it. No dependency on external services/API)

seemslegit··on Signal PINs
Facts are that whatever e2e encryption telegram allegedly offers needs to be invoked per-conversation as a 'secret chat' and is not availabe on dekstops, normal conversations are ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -encrypted
