seemslegit··on Redis Core Team Update
As with Yossi and Oran vis-a-vis Redis labs, it is not clear whether Madelyn and Zhao are in the core team in their personal capacities or as representatives of Amazon and Alibaba respectively, we know that Redis labs reserves the right to name replacements for Yossi and Oran, is the same true for Madelyn and Zhao and their current employers ?
seemslegit··on U.S. Supreme Court deems half of Oklahoma a Native American reservation
Uh, surely it doesn't mean the the people residing in the area in question can go on committing what would be a crime under Oklahoma law... right ?
seemslegit··on Slate Star Codex and Silicon Valley’s War Against the Media
> The mind-set of logical serenity, for all of the rationalists’ talk of “skin in the game” and their inclination to heighten every argument with a proposition bet, only obtains as long as their discussions feel safely confined to the realm of what they regard, consciously or otherwise, as sport.

Contrast and compare with the New Yorker writers and readership who regard their own high-minded observational detachment as art, consciously or otherwise.

The writing is so terrible it is almost tongue-in-cheek to be imagined as recited by Sheldon Cooper. And no author credit.
seemslegit··on Vienna, City of Paradox
This talks about the records of colonial regimes which I'm sure were subject to as much redaction and suppression as possible, but I was talking about the historical records of the colonized cultures pre-colonization - do we know about any systematic attempts to destroy those ? Things like having ancient Egyptian and Babylonian relics taken to Britain and Germany don't really qualify either here because even though they were used to glorify the colonizing empires they were extensively studied and preserved.
seemslegit··on Vienna, City of Paradox
The lack of recorded history is more about the west-central African, Caribean and American colonies. India has a decent historic record surviving today and it shows the usual story of class-stratified kingdoms waging wars, persecuting ethno-religious outgroups etc.

Source for the systematic destruction of historic documents in India and America ?

I mean, I fully trust Chomsky to find a way in which trying to end over two millennia of hostility and subjugation is somehow used to discredit the West but...
seemslegit··on Vienna, City of Paradox
what about it ?
seemslegit··on Vienna, City of Paradox
Not really, the Mongols did quite well with much larger area and far fewer people by suppressing resistance through sheer terror.
seemslegit··on Vienna, City of Paradox
If the "colonies" had kept their history recorded prior to being colonized it would not have been prettier than whatever was done in Europe or by Europe - the Chinese, Persians and Mongol/Turkic occupied lands that did record history from pretty early on have documented every kind of mass, group and individual atrocities imaginable take place. Same for everything that as far as we know took place in the Americas prior to colonizaton.

Nah you're ok, I was just making a point about the previous reply

But like, an ironic fist bump - right ?
seemslegit··on Ask HN: Essential life skills to function as a human being?
I think the mass consensus is to pretend like it doesn't exist while actively engaging in it making it ever more subtle and meta until eventually noone knows who's trying to signal what anymore. Good times.
seemslegit··on Ask HN: Essential life skills to function as a human being?
Ah, I thought this was about us being enlightened for leaving the dress-based signalling behind.
seemslegit··on Ask HN: Essential life skills to function as a human being?
You should probably account for the demographic bias of HN before crediting the entire civilization.
seemslegit··on Ask HN: Essential life skills to function as a human being?
But how many of these can be practiced simultaneously ?
seemslegit··on Dopamine is not addictive (2017)
He's arguing that colloquial demonization of dopamine as the cause of addiction isn't fair because dopamine is necessary for normal cognitive functioning and isn't accurate because dopamine is not itself the feel-good hormone, then proceeds to tell that dopamine helps attribute reward to behaviour.
seemslegit··on Dopamine is not addictive (2017)
It's basically a longform "guns don't kill people" argument for dopamine and addiction.
seemslegit··on Brython – A Python 3 implementation for client-side web programming
I'm having trouble imagining a place that writes browser code where X is not js in the first place.
seemslegit··on Brython – A Python 3 implementation for client-side web programming
Just out of curiosity, what kind of a moderately-complex codebase can be migrated to a browser setting from one that C# is currently running on without considerable refactoring or adaptations ?
seemslegit··on Brython – A Python 3 implementation for client-side web programming
https://xkcd.com/801/

In-browser programming is 5% about js as a language and 95% about DOM, html, various browser apis etc. - all the examples for the above are in js anyway so at the very least one needs to become proficient reading js to do anything useufl.

seemslegit··on Brython – A Python 3 implementation for client-side web programming
For the love of DOM, why replace one dynamic language that is at least optimized for by the browser by another foreign one with an intermediate layer in between ?

King James version also gets it right, but even "He said:" is a complete sentence.

seemslegit··on Bible API
There are several chapters in Job with the first verse being roughly "And X replied, saying" with the rest of the chapter being their reply. Still very much a full sentence that identifies the speaker.
seemslegit··on Voice, an invite-only social network where everyone is verified
Sounds like a very useful way to identify people one would not wish to hear from in real life either.
seemslegit··on Bible API
Corinthians is not part of the old testament so I'm afraid its versing might not be per the union standards.

It is currently versed as:

Jews demand signs and Greeks search for wisdom.

But we preach Christ crucified - A stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.

But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Which seems like three complete sentences forming a paragraph to me even if not to any modern style guide.

Alternatively it could have been:

Jews demand signs and Greeks search for wisdom - but we preach [the words of] Christ crucified !

A stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.

But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
In both cases the logical structure remains the same and the three sentences form a larger idea.
