seemaze··on Streaming AI agent desktops with gaming protocols
There’s 1,000 established industries that don’t offer the rapid growth and pay outs of the modern tech ecosystem. I’m excited to see some of the current industrial backwaters soak up technical talent freed up by the SV AI brain drain.

To think we’ve handsomely paid our best and brightest the last few decades in pursuit of.. advertising?

seemaze··on AGI fantasy is a blocker to actual engineering
On the water front, in my area agriculture flood irrigates with pristine aquifer water, while surface water gets treated and dumped into the drinking supply. This is due to the economics of historic water rights.
seemaze··on Why do voice transcription apps charge monthly when Whisper runs locally?
I switched home insurance away from liberty mutual after my term was up and did not renew. Three weeks after my coverage with them lapsed I received a notice from a collection agency for a late fee for coverage I never purchased. FUCK automatic billing and non-consensual subscriptions.
seemaze··on Transparent computer monitor designed to protect your vision
Life is a series of compromises. Whether you prioritize your work or your health is up to you, and I believe worth continuous debate.
seemaze··on Transparent computer monitor designed to protect your vision
No thanks. I have a HUD in my car that I can hardly read.

Want to protect your eyesight when viewing a computer monitor? Increase your ambient lighting levels, sit farther back, and take frequent breaks.

seemaze··on Btop: A better modern alternative of htop with a gamified interface
It's slowly growing on me too. Htop is defined in my muscle memory, but more and more of my systems now have btop installed as well..
seemaze··on JermCAD: Browser-Based CAD Software
I know, YAML has that effect on me too!
seemaze··on Show HN: JermCAD – A YAML-powered, vibe-coded, browser-based CAD software
CAD (computer aided design) is a rather broad term used across many industries. There are many established CAD programs which do not offer PMI, simulation, or material properties. I do concur that views, dims, and units are table stakes.
seemaze··on Two billion email addresses were exposed
I originally started using Bitwarden to achieve sync across Mac, Windows, and Linux machines, along with all major browser platforms. It's been great!
seemaze··on Why AC is cheap, but AC repair is a luxury
How are ‘new cars’ and ‘cell phone services’ considered ‘unregulated’?
seemaze··on Why engineers can't be rational about programming languages
Lol, that sums up the human experience. You should sell bumper stickers:

"Rock bottom is deeper than you think!"

seemaze··on AI's Dial-Up Era
I think that speaks more to the fact that software ate the world, than locality of compute. It's a breadth first, depth last game.
seemaze··on First recording of a dying human brain shows waves similar to memory flashbacks (2022)
My first time I remember the anesthesiologist asking me to count backwards from 100. I assumed the process would take 30 to 60 seconds. I don't think I even hit 97..
seemaze··on Python Steering Council unanimously accepts "PEP 810, Explicit lazy imports"
I'm confused, wouldn't HRT be happy about this? The article you linked specifically states "..we hope to propose a revised lazy imports PEP that introduces an explicit lazy keyword.."

Is that not exactly what PEP 810 proposes?

seemaze··on Why Nextcloud feels slow to use
I run it manually as needed. It's already packaged for both Alpine Linux and Homebrew which suits my ad-hoc needs wonderfully!

seemaze··on Why Nextcloud feels slow to use
I found copyparty to be too busy on the UI/UX side of things. I've settled on dufs[0], quick to deploy, fast to use use, and cross platform.

seemaze··on A prison of my own making
To address some of the issues outlined in the article, I've settled on running Alpine Linux in my homelab. Things I enjoy:

- Runs completely from ram and is incredibly small which makes it easy to grok all running processes.

- It has a reasonably complete catalog of packages due it's popularity as a container distro.

- The LBU backup utility and APKOVL artifacts make committing, aborting, or reverting config changes a breeze so I can tinker to my hearts content without fear of borking the system.

seemaze··on My Impressions of the MacBook Pro M4
ooh, my feathers were a bit ruffled (for reasons unrelated) when I wrote the above.

I still say for comfortable all day viewing and productivity, there is no comparison. Glossy does have more pop on a phone or watching movies in the dark, but I'd go blind doing that all day every day..

seemaze··on My Impressions of the MacBook Pro M4
Do you prefer glossy paper work? glossy book pages? glossy construction documents? The preference for a non-reflective surface for the relaying of dense information has been established for decades.

You know what's glossy? Movie posters and postcards.

seemaze··on Canva’s affinity strategy: Normies over power users
I've used Photoshop forever, mostly for image manipulation instead of full on graphic production. I've found the web editor Photopea[0] to scratch most of the itch these days.

seemaze··on Apple reports fourth quarter results
Framework desktop incoming here. (mac/iPad/i)OS 26 tipped me over the edge. Eyeing whether 7 years of GrapheneOS on a pixel will suffice as well..
seemaze··on Affinity Studio now free
It looks like it is an offline application (after license verification) in he FAQ

>You will need to be online to download and activate your license with your free Canva account. From then on, there is no requirement to be online, even with extended offline periods.

As a long time Adobe "user" (read: hater) I'm curious if this decision targets Adobe or Microsoft options more..? Maybe both.

seemaze··on 3D solar tower increases capacity factor 50%, triples solar surface area
about 15 degrees
seemaze··on 3D solar tower increases capacity factor 50%, triples solar surface area
I find the title disingenuous. "3D" solar tower? as opposed to a "2D" tower?

Seems largely based on the assumption that most people view PV installations as a strictly planar affair.

Does my neighbor who has solar on both slopes of his pitched roof have a geometrically novel "folded plate" configuration which increases capacity by employing the biomimetic strategy of diurnal heliotropism?

seemaze··on Carlo Rovelli’s radical perspective on reality
I must admit the foundation of the argument presented punches well above my understanding, but I recently read Carlo Rovelli's short work "The Order of Time" and found it wonderfully engaging and relatable.
seemaze··on Dithering – Part 1
While I enjoyed the whole presentation, my favorite part after progressing through the entire deck was pressing my back button once and landing right back here on HN :)
seemaze··on Aggressive bots ruined my weekend
That's sleazy. It's slipping drugs into a kids lunchbox and letting smuggle it across the border..
