seemack··on How Android developers access installed apps on user’s device [pdf]
One legit purpose would be to provide better UX in the source app. It could display text to explain the situation to the user in the case that they don't have the required ap. This would be a more seamless experience than a screen that has to account for both possibilities.

That's not really a fair comparison. I don't think WebGL and SVG allow you to do the type of animation OP is referring to.

Furthermore, ConstraintLayout is a brand-new layout manager. Totally agree that there's bugs in it but nothing that could be called arcane knowledge. Do you have any examples for the actually arcane layout managers? Relative, Layout, etc?

This sounds like you're implying that all apps must require invasive permissions which is wholly incorrect.

haha fair enough. Thanks for the clarification!

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the logic but doesn't that mean using a fancy pen is "cringey as hell" since you can just use a simple ballpoint pen?

Sorry, it just seems unnecessarily negative to me.

I agree with the overall points, less so the pointless vitriol. Installing software is cringey as hell now?

The main issue here isn't native apps. It's the existing framework for installing them.

For instance, would it be that far-fetched to be able to open an app in a single click?

Current extended process: 1) Click link that takes me to app store page 2) Find and click install button 3) wait 4) Click "open app" button

Streamlined process that accomplishes the same: 1) click link 2) wait 3) app opens up (download/install hidden behind spinner)

Even if you have to add a pop-up in there to display permission requests, it's still a much smoother experience.

You'd have to worry about app sizes but that's a solveable problem as well.

seemack··on Dark Mode by Default – 95% of People Prefer Dark over Light Mode
Neat tidbit that I learned while working on dark mode at my company. Don't use true black. It looks amazing on OLED screens at rest but it results in a weird sluggish appearance when scrolling. This is because there is a lag time between pixels going from off to on.

The material team at Google made a blog post about it which I recommend going through: https://material.io/design/color/dark-theme.html

The quote around the OLED: "On OLED screens, turning pixels on and off can cause a delay when the screen is scrolled, making the pixels blur."

As an example, the facebook messenger app uses a true black background and the delay is _very_ noticeable.

I'm personally curious if the amount of profit is being overstated. My guess is that video game publishers in China grow to similar quality of western publishers and Chinese nationalism means the gamers from which Blizzard is hoping to glean their "profits" turn to supporting China's home-grown games.

They would likely be roundly disagreed with people and that would be a perfectly normal interaction. It sounds like you're attempting to imply that the US would have responded in the same way as China but that's simply not true.

> The younger generation is much more focused on economic well-being and safety over liberty or freedom

This is perfectly reasonable when you consider it a personal decision. Sure, trade away some of your freedom for better economic well-being.

But how do they justify this when their personal economic well-being requires trampling the freedom of other people?

By that logic, would pro-China people would support China going to war with and taking over other countries if it brought them "economic well-being"?

(edited to make the last statement more clearly a question since it's something I'm genuinely curious about.)

Not sure what's changed but that link shows me only one business with 5-figure monthly revenues.
seemack··on Hong Kong protests: 'I'm in Australia but I feel censored by Chinese students'
I'm afraid I don't understand your response.

Your initial message ended with "Speaking louder in public place is not breaking any LAW." This indicates that you were responding to some claim that the counter-protesters had broken a law by being louder in public. I haven't seen any claims resembling that so I'm curious to see where you did.

Can you show me where someone said that the counter-protesters broke the law by "speaking louder in public places"?

This is entirely about the counter-protestors violently attacking the protestors.
