secondbreakfast··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2021)
Bottle | Remote (we have people in NYC, ATL, Hawaii, and abroad) | Full-time | bottle.com

Bottle helps local businesses sell by texting their community. When merchants sign up, they 1. launch a one-page checkout, 2. sign their customers up for a text membership, and then 3. text order reminders and product drops to their fam every week.

We're a real business. We bootstrapped for 5 years and then closed our first funding in company history from an amazing group of investors two months ago. We're currently 4 full-time employees and 5 part-time contractors with plans to double our team in the next 6 months. Hiring for:

- Lead Ruby on Rails developer (3+ years of experience, to take over backend engineering)

- Lead Vue developer (1+ year of experience)

- Product Manager (we're looking for people genuinely interested in our problem space of local business, ecommerce, and texting)

- No-Code Specialist (PART-TIME) (to help us build out Zapier, Hubspot, Front, and Retool workflows) (SQL knowledge a plus but not required)

secondbreakfast··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
For people who spend $250+ per seat in Salesforce, $30/mo for a blazing fast web design/coding/collaboration experience is - if anything - cheap.

Cue @patio11...

PS very impressed with MightyApp - joined the waitlist. Congrats :)

secondbreakfast··on Tech Tent: Bye-bye Silicon Valley, hello global workforce?
There are rules around who's allowed to be classified as a 1099. If you're employed full time and told how to perform your job, the government is likely going to determine you're a W2. This is likely what OP meant by "abusing" the 1099 status.
secondbreakfast··on Tech Tent: Bye-bye Silicon Valley, hello global workforce?
> The additional complexity and costs of having non-local employees can absolutely be prohibitive, leading some companies to just abuse 1099 status.

secondbreakfast··on Has Y Combinator lost its way when the latest company is a Mac only widget?
Looks cool, thanks for the link. Sounds weird but the "join zoom"/"join hangout" button is really the most helpful part of this plugin. Perhaps Mowglii can add. I'm always 60 seconds late to meetings, finding my calendar, finding event, finding mtg link
secondbreakfast··on Has Y Combinator lost its way when the latest company is a Mac only widget?
I clicked through thinking I'd agree this is silly, but this is an incredibly compelling app.

Downloaded and got it set up in less than 2 minutes. Already in love. Weighing if $10/mo is worth it and my immediate reaction isn't "No"

secondbreakfast··on Bitcoin may be optimally positioned to become preferred currency for world trade
True for all securities.
secondbreakfast··on Coinbase (2013)
Conservatively the round here valued the company at $25m. Pre-dilution that's a 4000x return, likely 2000x-3000x post-dilution.
secondbreakfast··on Ask HN: Team fun event ideas during WFH?
My friends launched Marco[0] last year for teams do fun stuff virtually. Was at first skeptical of doing something like a gin tasting on Zoom, but all of the events I've done are really fun. They vet the events, manage delivering food and booze for you, etc.

secondbreakfast··on Decentralization Is a Narrative Mirage
I think this is too small of a time window. On the thousand-year horizon, centralization has been consistently increasing.

We may fluctuate a bit to more decentralized in the next decade. If bitcoin "wins", then on one hand it's a story of decentralization - no one controls it! - but on the other it compresses a bunch of currencies and wealth assets into one.

And hopefully the miners don't eventually become centralized...

secondbreakfast··on Decentralization Is a Narrative Mirage
I don't think I buy that specialization/centralization are completely orthogonal, but I grant that they're different.

In this specific case, I'm making the claim that independent farmers have been and will continue to be on the decline. And in the general case, in the case of trade+specialization, it seems that over the long run the "best" at the trade will eventually own an outsize amount of the market. Technology enables them to win.

This seems by observation to be true in distribution, in farming, in content, in finance, etc.

secondbreakfast··on Decentralization Is a Narrative Mirage
That is an interesting thought, I like it. I sense centralization is a bit like interest rates. Fluctuating decade to decade, but historically rates have been ~declining for 2,000 years.

PCs are decentralized mainframes, but phones are now PCs and all they do is ping AWS/Azure all day long now.

FWIW, I think centralization has been a net positive for humanity. I'm glad I don't grow all my own food.

secondbreakfast··on Decentralization Is a Narrative Mirage
I should’ve written, “Everybody sewed their own clothes until we specialized and people became tailors by trade.”
secondbreakfast··on The computer revolution hasn’t happened yet (1997)
My thought process reading this article:

-“Wow Alan Kay is legendary.”

-“Can’t imagine life before OOP.”

-“I like how this YouTube video is annotated and I can scroll, see screenshots, and jump into the video where I want.”

-“I wish there were more video summaries like this.”

-“Generating summaries of videos like this is something tools like GPT-3 will do for us soon.”

secondbreakfast··on The Careful Work of Breathing Life into the Corpse Flower
Saw one of these at the Chicago Botanical Gardens a few years ago. The corpse smell is not an understatement.
secondbreakfast··on What If You Could Do It All Over?
You can do what you wish you did yesterday, today.
secondbreakfast··on Stripe Treasury
Cash flow is the #1 problem with small businesses. Vendors to pay to make the goods they're selling. When you attach a bank account, it usually takes ~3 business days from card processed to accessible cash. This isn't Stripe's fault, it's bank transfer ACH's fault.

By offering sellers a built-in checking account, Stripe (and in turn Shopify) can decrease the time it takes to access money you've been paid. Same-day or next-day access, huge deal.

edit: I'll add, Stripe already offers immediate access to cash (Instant Transfers), but they charge 1.5% because technically they're extending credit. Stripe is eating their own lunch here. People won't need Instant Transfers as often and their profit margin on the interest sitting in the checking accounts will be much lower than the 1.5% fee they currently charge for Instant Transfer. But much bigger market.

secondbreakfast··on Don’t pay for 95% (2016)
I find a lot of joy in the 5% that I can host friends, though.
secondbreakfast··on Airbnb Pulled Back from the Brink
I think you're right about a lot of trends here, especially the funny point about how airlines rewards programs are worth more than the airlines themselves.

However, business travel and leisure travel shouldn't be conflated. I'm much more worried about the hotel industry - which caters to business travelers that will be significantly impaired for much longer post-COVID.

I.e. domestic Airbnb spending was actually up 22% in July YoY, whereas hotels are still getting destroyed.[1]

secondbreakfast··on Ask HN: What domain registrar do you use/trust?
DNSimple

I posted about them here a few days ago, but they are unbelievably better than every registrar I've ever used. And I've used Namecheap, Godaddy, Bluehost, Google Domains, the list goes on.

They're profitable, bootstrapped, going nowhere, been around a long time. Their dashboard is so simple and they make it easy to use DNS templates, but they also have a simple and friendly API.

secondbreakfast··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
I tell everyone who will listen to use DNSimple. The best.
secondbreakfast··on Amazon launches Halo: tracks activity, body fat, emotions
Yeah! This looks like a great offer for both of those reasons.
secondbreakfast··on Amazon launches Halo: tracks activity, body fat, emotions
Surprised (or maybe not?) by the negativity of the comments here. This is a direct competitor to Whoop[1]. Athletes and friends of mine rave about it.

Knowing physical strain, recovery levels, etc. helps you know when to train harder, when to take a day off, when to specifically rest up.

For somebody aiming for elite performance (physically and mentally), the data is invaluable.

secondbreakfast··on Don’t Judge a Substack by Its Cover
Agreed. It's a subconscious bias I've noticed creep in over the years.
secondbreakfast··on Don’t Judge a Substack by Its Cover
Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. I hope they're able to avoid the same outcome of Medium. I think the paid feature and the email-first feature change the dynamics a little bit. The similar brand matters less when all your subscribers are just getting your posts via email, and the subscribe/pay features can serve as signals to show which Substacks are worth paying more attention to.

We'll see!

secondbreakfast··on Ask HN: How do I become an 'elite' programmer?
There is no jumping the gun! Go for it.
secondbreakfast··on Ask HN: How do I become an 'elite' programmer?
Daily process goals are a wonderful life skill.

You can improve your writing skills by writing every day. I recommend it.

But the best way to become an elite programmer is to understand complexity: when it’s okay and when it will kill you. The best way to understand complexity is to have ownership of projects that grow in size. You’ll watch the database queries start to buckle or the abstractions hamper readability or the singleton grow grossly in scope.

Build things, publish them, and work on them over longer periods of time. Share them with friends. Learn from the brittle parts of the code.

secondbreakfast··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (July 2020)
SEEKING FREELANCER

Bottle (sendbottles.com) | Remote | Vue.js Frontend Engineer, Vue/React Native Engineer

We are helping local producers get their veggies and products into more homes. Currently seeking a frontend engineer to help implement a new Vue-based messenger, dashboard, and checkout experience. Also seeking a Vue/React Native engineer to take our Vue app and make it available on iOS and Android. (We currently have a native iOS app, but are working to replace it with a Vue Native app). The frontend Vue app connects to a Rails app on the backend, but we're specifically seeking frontend engineers here.

Email will@ company domain and I'll get in touch.
