sebnukem2··on Chevrolet Bolt EV Is the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year
The Bolt is just a beautiful car, more so than the Tesla model 3. I'm glad they make EVs that don't look like Buicks or LeBarons.
sebnukem2··on Chevrolet Bolt EV Is the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year
I totally agree with you. The Volt seems like the perfect car, but I ultimately picked the Prius over the Volt for 2 reasons: the Prius looks a lot better and, more importantly, has a lot more interior space that I need. The Volt felt both heavy and cramped, like a flawed first generation product. The 2nd gen Volt is a big improvement.
sebnukem2··on 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV
Combustion engines are about 15-20% efficient. Toyota has 30+% engines in their Prius.

Electric motors are about 90% efficient.

So electric motors are about 5x more efficient than ICEs.

sebnukem2··on How the Web Became Unreadable
And I thought I was the only one it bothered to no end.
sebnukem2··on Ask HN: How did you migrate to the country you are living in now?
France -> USA

Contracted for a US company in France, went to the US for the 2 weeks to train the American team on the project I was working on, stayed 2 more months because of the work needed, the American team ended up hiring me and payed for my green card.

sebnukem2··on Wind turbines in Denmark reached record level in 2014
No, this is a correct figure. I think you are confusing power with energy. Also, the consumption of the average US home is a lot higher than in Europe.
sebnukem2··on Ask HN: What are your favourite tools to work with?
notebook + pen, ssh, bash, Perl, Vim, IntelliJ, Eclipse, Firebug.
sebnukem2··on Show HN: CSS Filter Effects
Now what would be really cool is the ability to define a filter function in JS callable from the CSS. Of course one can do that with canvas.
sebnukem2··on Show HN: CSS Filter Effects
It does. FF 36 on CentOS 6.6.
sebnukem2··on The Apple Watch
If I had to choose between a dumb watch that never needs recharging (like my Citizen Eco-Drive) and a "smart" watch that doesn't even last a full day, I'd choose the dumb watch.

Who the hell think that a watch that can't even function a day is an acceptable product? This just blows my mind. And yet, I'm pretty sure they are going to sell millions of them. I wouldn't want one if it was free.

sebnukem2··on Stuff I've Messed Up While Interviewing
I had such an awful experience with Google interviews it completely turned me off from wanting to work there. I don't want to be around people like that.
sebnukem2··on In 2013, measles killed more kids than car accidents or AIDS
Let us hope, that we are getting closer to discovering the vaccine for human idiocy. While one can argue and appreciate natural selection at work, the helpless children pay the steep price, not the stupid parents.
sebnukem2··on Firefox 36.0 released
I would start by thinning the crap that you probably have in the form of extensions... I've been running Firefox since 1.0 on all OSes and I can't remember it crashing on me once (it probably happened, a long time ago, but I honestly can't remember.)
sebnukem2··on You Don't Need JQuery
You Don't Need JQuery if your time is worthless, and don't mind spending 20x the amount of time to make your stuff almost work on IE.
sebnukem2··on Colorado communities secure the right to build their own broadband
"[..]states have laws limiting the ability of local governments or their partners to offer their own broadband services, often passed with the encouragement of big commercial broadband providers who complain about unfair competition."

Amazing statement considering that the providers in question are likely to be local monopolies.

sebnukem2··on Unexpected ways to wake up your brain
There's one thing that fully wakes me up every morning better than a dozen cups of coffee ever would: biking to work.
sebnukem2··on Termtris: A Game Like Tetris in Ten Functions
Best documented little project ever.
sebnukem2··on Google Noto Fonts
It looks awfully blurry in Firefox on Linux.
sebnukem2··on Show HN: Car Cost Calculator – my weekend project
such caclulator. very caclate.
sebnukem2··on Show HN: Car Cost Calculator – my weekend project
You could approximate by saying that a gallon is a kWh of energy. set up the Fuel Price per Gallon to electricity cost $0.1(a), 3(b) MPG, and a much lower maintenance cost...

(a) 10 cents per kWh (depends on where you live), (b) 3 miles per kWh (or 333Wh/mile, depends on the actual EV)

sebnukem2··on Things I learned as an engineer that I wish I had known in grad school
The "80/20 Rule" is the Pareto principle.
sebnukem2··on Realistic terrain in 130 lines of JavaScript
I think implementing parallel computing using webworkers would be a good item for the "What's Next" list of suggestions.
sebnukem2··on Is it possible to apply CSS to half of a character?
::after would work as well. It just adds something before or after the selected DOM element, in this case, a half-shown copy of the letter on top of the original.
sebnukem2··on Map Reduce: A simple introduction (2010)
The many typos of the text make it almost difficult to read...
sebnukem2··on Firefox 29
Now, how to get rid of those fugly rounded fat tabs?

A: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemer...

sebnukem2··on TDD is dead. Long live testing.
"Test-first fundamentalism is like abstinence-only sex ed: An unrealistic, ineffective morality campaign for self-loathing and shaming."

Amen for a perfect analogy.

sebnukem2··on The Oculus Buyout Rage Machine
Advertisement remains Real in Virtual Reality.
sebnukem2··on The Oculus Buyout Rage Machine
I've seen similar outpouring of unconditional love for companies like Comcast, Bank of America, and Monsanto. I keep wondering why Facebook has so many users. It doesn't look good in the long term.
sebnukem2··on The secrets of the world's happiest cities
I moved to a new job 2 years ago. Everything got better, the pay, the people, the work, except one thing. My commute got too short! My bike commute is the highlight of my day. I am privileged with not having to own a car.
sebnukem2··on The secrets of the world's happiest cities
Fascinating, and so much common sense at the same time.
