seanflyon··on What does it mean for an algorithm to be fair?
Why would the damages caused by institutionalized racism be anything but ugly?
seanflyon··on What does it mean for an algorithm to be fair?
Feedback is just as much of an issue whether the relationship is correlation or causation. All correlations are either based on random chance (thus not statistically significant) or based on some causal relationship, even if we can't identify what it is. Could be A->B, B->A, C->A and C->B, A->C->B...

Correlation and causation have the same predictive power.

There is a strong contingent that believes that the risk of you defaulting on a loan should be taken into account in the terms of the loan. There is also the ugly fact that the risk of you defaulting is correlated with race.
seanflyon··on What does it mean for an algorithm to be fair?
I don't see where causation entered the conversation. Correlation and causation have the same predictive power. If the water on Mars turns 90% of people into men or 90% of the people that drink said water are already men, either way if you tell me you drank the water on Mars I know with a 90% certainty you are a man. Algorithms find both correlation and causal factors which is fine because I want accuracy whether or not it is based on causality.
seanflyon··on Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief
Yes democracy has its problems as well, that's the entire point of that famous quip. Which countries would you most want to live in and how many of them are democracies Nazi Germany accomplished some impressive things, but they were the exact opposite of good government. A clear majority of countries are either actual democracies or pretend to be, because of a near worldwide consensus that democracy is the best option we have.
seanflyon··on Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief
Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others. We have decided that no one is more trustworthy to pick our leaders than large bodies of anonymous people.

seanflyon··on What Happens to Home Prices When Technologists Come to Town
You don't need to bring prices down to Stockton levels to avoid San Francisco level problems.
seanflyon··on Uber Drivers Deemed Employees by California Labor Commission
Dragontamer is speaking as if Uber's competition is external to Uber, which of course it is. Uber sets its price and then offers services in a free market at that price, just like any other company. That makes Uber different from platforms (such as ebay) that facilitate sales but do not set prices.
seanflyon··on Student “safety” has become a real threat to free speech on campus
Unless they are on your property, in which case you can ask them to leave.
seanflyon··on Student “safety” has become a real threat to free speech on campus
You have 1st amendment rights everywhere, but a private institution is allowed to ask you to leave if they don't like what you say in public or in private. The only exception to this is discrimination laws: If you can show that they asked you to leave because you are a member of a protected class, then they are in trouble.
seanflyon··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
I don't think that anything you wrote here makes sense as a response to my comment. Less resource intensive crops grow here, great. If they are cost effective then we should continue to grow them, if they are not cost effective then clearly they are not "way less resource intensive". The notion that we should maintain water-intensive agriculture because "you die without food" has nothing to do with reality. There is plenty of food and we could grow far more if we wanted to.

We are talking about luxury items. If you want crops that only grow in Mediterranean areas, great, so do I. We enjoy our luxuries, but we should not subsidize the unsustainable production of luxuries, which is what we are doing by giving them water at far bellow market rates.

seanflyon··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
> letting the price of water reflect its supply and demand.

Which would force a significant reduction in agricultural water use.

seanflyon··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
> CA is one of 5 Mediterranean climates in the world, and that makes it suitable to grow all kinds of stuff that doesn't grow anywhere else. 2% GDP is irrelevant because you die without food.

You can live perfectly fine without Mediterranean food and if California stopped growing water-intensive crops it would cause a shortage of those crops, not a shortage of food.

seanflyon··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
It works pretty well for food.
seanflyon··on Google: 90% of our engineers use the software you wrote (Homebrew), but...
As far as I'm aware, Mac is just as 'banned' as Windows. Developers have Linux(Goobuntu) desktops and Mac, Linux, Windows or ChromeOS for laptops (which are primarily used as a terminal for your desktop).

While there certainly are incompetent interviewers, I think ones that extreme are rare.

seanflyon··on How Soylent Ships a Trillion Calories per Month
For what percentage of your meals do you cook and eat tasty new food in the company of other people?
seanflyon··on How Soylent Ships a Trillion Calories per Month
> we know people do fine on traditionally healthy food

This is a valid point to an extent, but we don't know that people do fine on a particular subset of traditionally healthy ingredients. We may discover that Soylent lacks some subtle nutrient, but we could discover the same thing with MealSquares.

seanflyon··on How Soylent Ships a Trillion Calories per Month
I've always seen the value proposition as saving time vs cooking yourself and saving money vs buying prepared food.
seanflyon··on Senate Approves Bill to Rein in N.S.A. Surveillance
I like the way it worked before the Patriot Act: want to search someone's property? Get a warrant. Want to tap someone's phone? Get a warrant. Want to collect whatever private information? Get a warrant with the target's name on it.

seanflyon··on Can Reddit interview presidential candidates better than traditional media?
I agree with a lot of your comment, but this bothered me:

> you frankly don't understand the value and purpose of the 1st amendment

The purpose of the 1st amendment is to ensure peoples rights to free speech, even if that speech is biased and not worth listening to. Criticism of particular speech or a particular venue has nothing to do with the first amendment.

seanflyon··on SpaceX cleared for US military launches
Or Russia could abruptly decide not to sell us any more. Relying on a foreign government to keep our military functioning is not ideal and our relations with Russia, while generally friendly, are somewhat strained the last few years.

I'm pretty sure those costs are estimates based on a high production rate.

Could you state what you mean by "libertarianism" because the definition I am used to has "limited intervention in individual's lives" at its heart.
