seagaia··on Deep comparison Google+ vs Facebook
"For the most part, Google has lived up to its “Don’t Be Evil” slogan. Which company would you rather have as the steward of your personally identifiable information?"

Well, I'm not sure. I don't think either of them would do anything EVIL (sell my personal information to some person to come threaten my family), but don't both of them use all of our info to sell to advertising companies (which in a way, is practical, and kind of evil?)

seagaia··on Realtime Hadoop usage at Facebook: The Complete Story
Interesting, as much as I don't really like facebook.

I only see Hadoop being used even more widely now - that, or spinoffs/improvements, etc., as needed, unless Hadoop really can scale as much as possible.

At least, that's what this article tells me.

seagaia··on Learn C The Hard Way
I hope this book will show lots of new C programmers the beauty of pointers in hand-holdy detail ('cause that's the level needed, I feel). Maybe basic stuff about VM, so all the pointer operations make sense (everything is a byte at some offset etc.).

At least I didn't fully appreciate C until I understood some of the underlying concepts.

Looking forward to reading this!

seagaia··on Website tracks seafood dinners back to fishermen
That, or it being caught, harvested, etc, with information. It could take a long time to get that technology, but it's a black box that would be nice to be lifted for most of the consuming society.
seagaia··on Tom Anderson: Google+ makes Google a better, more integrated set of services
I think Tom is pretty mature about MS being outcompeted by the other social networking sites. That's quite pleasing to see.

I feel that inevitably, I will somehow end up using Google+, despite my lack of need (or want) for it at the moment, though.

seagaia··on Pregel - distributed graph processing | DDI
This is pretty cool - are there any in-development frameworks for Pregel, sort of like how Hadoop was with MapReduce?
seagaia··on Advice From An Old Programmer
"You know, kind of like Haskell."

Ow ow - come on now, there are definitely practical applications of Haskell. It just has a painful learning curve, but it's very elegant in the end.

seagaia··on Why Computer Science
This is also really interesting for everyone else's majors as well - really seems to come down to pursue what interests you.
