sdflhasjd··on Zigbee and Z-Wave are the best part of my smart home
When I started I had a good mix of all 3 (WiFi, Zigbee & Z-wave). 5 years layer, everything's slowly been absorbed into Zigbee. WiFi isn't a mesh network, so there's extremities with poor reliability. Z-wave just seemed to suffer from poor device availability, and everything turned out to be more expensive with no real benefit.

Also, one other thing to mention with WiFi and Bluetooth is how it's basically a massive red flag, a stamp of "hey, this device needs our shit app to use."

It's just a shame there's no Zigbee ESP32 equivalent for all my hobby bits.

sdflhasjd··on Spoutible's Leaky API Spurted Out a Deluge of Personal Data
You obviously have to be aware that this could be an issue, and extrapolating from some of the code quality found on other parts of the site[0], I don't think they've got the awareness to proactively deal with that sort of thing.

sdflhasjd··on Spoutible's Leaky API Spurted Out a Deluge of Personal Data
That API is a result of ineptitude, but the disclosure is just so full of spin and lies, they're unable to honestly say what was actually leaked without deliberate ommission with only some lose implication to cover their ass.

Nearly half of the words in this rather pathetic disclosure are a dramatic grandstand against... I don't really know to be honest.

> As the CEO of Spoutible, I accept full responsibility for this incident. Since our inception, we have faced an unparalleled barrage of attacks aimed at undermining our community. Yet, it is the spirit of our community that fortifies us against these assaults. The timing of this incident, coinciding with our anniversary, is a stark reminder of the hurdles we face. However, let this moment not weaken us but instead solidify our resolve.

> We stand united, more determined than ever, to uphold our commitment to providing a secure and inclusive platform. For every voice that seeks refuge, for every story that demands to be heard, Spoutible will remain a bastion of safety and solidarity. We will persist, unwavering in our dedication to champion the voices of the marginalized.

All those poor Spoutible users fighting on the beaches, in the fields and on the streets... oh wait, it's some kind of social media platform.

sdflhasjd··on Removed from r/blender because they thought it was real [video]
Watching it at a relatively low bitrate on my phone the two things that stand out are the drinking glass and the lamp. The glass is too perfect - a real glass will have tiny deviations in wall thickness and surface imperfections that are apparent when you look through it, especially when moving around, glasses are always one of the biggest giveaways for me.

The lamp also has something strange going on and doesn't look like any real diffuser. I think they've tried to use surface roughness to simulate frosted glass, but have made it too translucent. It doesn't look like a translucent plastic either because of the high IoR, and have possibly made it solid rather than walled.

Rewatching it trying not to pick out too much is difficult, but if I would add one more thing it would be the very uniformly rainy windows which have some gridding to the droplets (and the small error of putting the shader on both panes of the doube glazing :p)

sdflhasjd··on Removed from r/blender because they thought it was real [video]
This work is quite impressive, but even as someone who's only played around with rendering a little bit, it's quite apparent to my eyes it's CGI.

If this prompts any questions, then it's surely about moderation.

sdflhasjd··on ESP8266 DIY Smart Socket (2017)
That's due to it being a dimmer, which probably uses a triac or other semiconductor component for switching. The mechanical relay types are more popular and higher current.

sdflhasjd··on Epic Games CEO Likens Apple's Core Tech Fee to Unity's Disastrous Runtime Fee
The choice is in the technology you use when you build an application for a user. You don't get a choice what platform you build your apps for, you already have your customers, and they already have their phones. If you're a business for which the technology provided by Apple is not a key part of the product, then you're being forced to pay for technology you're trying your hardest not to use but are obligated to by policy.

If I build a Flutter app for checking bus times, what am I paying Apple for? I'm already deliberately avoiding their badly documented frameworks. Apple don't own the buses, they don't own the internet, they should not be claiming ownership of the users phones.

sdflhasjd··on Epic Games CEO Likens Apple's Core Tech Fee to Unity's Disastrous Runtime Fee
Yes, but you choose to use Unreal because it's actually good. Meanwhile Apple gives you no choice.

sdflhasjd··on Show HN: Startup funding simulator
I somehow broke it, I got a $5 investment against a $998B valuation and then sold it for $199B to gain $1.9T of profit???

Edit: "You get $InfinityB" I think I won.

sdflhasjd··on Data leak contains 26B records from numerous previous breaches
I checked for some of my old emails in the list. As far as I can tell, "26B" is due to duplicates and fake data. There were dozens of entries for sites that were never registered for with passwords that were never used. I'd be surprised if it was less than 80% junk.

sdflhasjd··on What's that touchscreen in my room?
There's enough boilers in garages, lofts, the other side of the house, etc, once you overlap it with UK houses being brick, you get enough situations where getting WiFi from one place to another becomes a pain. A lot of the time, the WiFi AP is 30 cm from where the phone line came into the house when it was built (before the internet even existed), which is not optimally placed for coverage.

sdflhasjd··on The M2 is more advanced than it seemed
I get this on my Mac Studio when I do anything CPU-intensive, the UI becomes jittery. macOS on M CPUs seems to be particularly sensitive to this because I can push a Ryzen much harder and not notice anything in Windows.
sdflhasjd··on I built an offline smart home
A British company called Den had a product that was exactly this.

Sadly it was very expensive and also locked down to their private cloud. The company went bust and took everyone's 'smart' homes with them.

sdflhasjd··on Demonstrating Cybertruck's dangerous lack of pinch sensors
The last video (which you might not see due to Threads' silly UI) does show the automatic boot door on another car not doing this.

Definitely not sure what the door slamming video is supposed to show. I'm not keen on trying it with my own car and fingers to compare.

Interestingly, "@snippy_tinman" in the replies (which you can actually fecking see in Threads) says this is a Federal requirement[1]:

> While closing, the power-operated window, partition, or roof panel shall stop and reverse direction either before contacting a test rod with properties described in S8.2 or S8.3, or before exerting a squeezing force of 100 newtons

I'm not sure if a boot/tailgate counts as a "partition" though

sdflhasjd··on Why Prusa is floundering, and how you can avoid their fate
I think it's a bit premature to say Prusa is floundering. If they were a VC funded startup with billions of debt needing to grow x% YoY to prevent a catastrophic implosion I would agree. Prusa seems reasonably self sufficient though and if they stop growing or shrink I wouldn't say they've failed. I think some people forget that businesses can still continue to exist, pay their employees well, and that's success.

On the other hand, Bambu still has to prove itself as sustainable in this regard and if they're selling their printers with tiny margins (or even at a loss) we've yet to see what their actual plans are, and with an ecosystem comes the potential for exploiting customers. They've already been dishonest in terms of their use of OSS.

And while Bambu did "steal" some software, their hardware seems reasonably novel - I don't think they've exploited Prusa specifically, and any trouncing they've done is because Prusa sat on the MK3 a bit too long.

One last thing is I think Bambu and Prusa can coexist. Prusa evolved from RepRap and combine both out of the box quality and DIY-ability, which is still a good draw for the same kind of tinkerers after a printer in the first place. In the other hand, Bambu products are the Apple/HP of printers - you dont do any tinkering even if you want and if it stops working you send it back.

sdflhasjd··on UK becomes first G20 country to halve its carbon emissions
Normally I would agree with the sentiments but cars just rust and disintegrate, depreciating in value more than any belonging I can immediately think of.

I was financially better off before I got a car. A lot of people could save money by using alternatives.
