sdedovic··on Parametric lamp design using circle packings
If you're into this kind of design check out https://n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/

They have some really cool (and very complicated) jigsaw puzzles [1] that I bought as gifts for my family. The Inifinity Puzzle is topologically a torus so you can infinitely tile it by taking a piece of off the left and placing it onto the right side.

I have a set of their coral coffee mugs [2] which I absolutely love, especially after toying around with my own reaction-diffusion based designs/art.

sdedovic··on Ask HN: Working part-time in tech?
I just (4th week tomorrow) started a similar thing with my company.

I work 16 hours / week and am on a support rotation (albeit 3rd tier). I only cover unplanned work on weekends. I took a 60% pay cut but keep all my pre-existing benefits.

So far it has been wonderful for my mental health, although with social distancing and the pandy it certainly has been difficult to keep busy some days. I am passively looking for supplemental work as I don't make enough to deposit into my savings. I imagine as winter rolls in this will be a necessity to stay busy/sane.

In the meantime, though, I have picked up lots of cooking, baking, and work on some personal coding projects. I have also been focusing much more of my time on art, which is really awesome! It's too early to tell but this might end up a more permanent situation for me (if not at the current company then maybe at the next one?).

I think this has also made me more productive at my job. I have 16 hours this week - what NEEDS to get done? What is a nice to have? Constraints are wonderful for productivity.

sdedovic··on Ask HN: Which book helped you understand the world?
Anna Karenina - I'm an eastern european raised in the US. It was really eye opening.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

sdedovic··on Kicks Condor is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Disney
Twitter has the same message, but not youtube or github. I am not sure.
sdedovic··on Comparing how different devices display the SSID “á̶̛̛̓̿̈͐͆̐̇̒̑̈́͘͝aaa”
I'd be curious to see how a car may display that.

I've paired my phone with a family members Volkswagen SUV and it could not display the SSID properly, an emoji.

Most laptops are capable of displaying emoji SSIDs (bluetooth and wifi).

sdedovic··on Exploration of Generative Art
Hey all! There's a very active slack community of some 150+ members/artists that was started in the last year or two. I did not start it but we are a very open community.

Feel free to email me at stevan [at @ symbol] dedovic [dot] com and I will gladly share an invite link!

I'll also talk to the person who started it to see if we can put out an invite link here.

sdedovic··on Show HN: Obsidian – A knowledge base that works on local Markdown files
My two biggest issues, skimming the website:

- this does not seem to be open source or free-as-in-speech. That worries me - especially when it comes to longevity. It's the reason I wouldn't use this product if it was by Google.

- i don't see an easy way to export my data in case I would like to migrate to a different service.

That being said I am definitely going to try it out and see what it does for me! There is definitely a gap in knowlege-mapping software in my life

sdedovic··on Blog of Inigo Quilez, Creator of Shadertoy
I found his blog a little while ago while getting into generative art and it has been a wonderful source of inspiration, quick learning, and deep knowledge. The domain warping tutorial is one of my personal favorites and the examples are gorgeous!

He also has some wonderful youtube videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62-pRVZuS5c).

I cannot recommend his website enough for folks getting into lower-level graphics development!

sdedovic··on Ask HN: Is Firebase Down?
There is a broad Google Cloud outage since appx. 9am CST. Their status page is green but someone from Google acknowledged the issue on Twitter. The GCP slack is also abuzz with users reporting issues across many many services.
sdedovic··on Ask HN: Great fiction books that have had a positive impact on your life?
- Anna Karenina: Tolstoy knows people better than they know themselves

- Brave New World: Aldous Huxley is a genius and a wordsmith

- Dune: a sci-fi masterpiece, highly recommended to anyone into sci-fi

- Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: not purely fiction but an amazing book I will surely re-read during my lifetime

sdedovic··on Peerspace Covid-19 Policy: not entitled to cancel, receive a refund
But this also covers bookings made in January, for example. While I agree with what you are saying the new policy does not exclude bookings made months ago to occur this summer.
sdedovic··on Peerspace Covid-19 Policy: not entitled to cancel, receive a refund
A friend noticed this while attempting to cancel a booking earlier today. The specific section reads:

Guests who cancel Bookings confirmed, updated or rescheduled prior to March 25, 2020, for Events scheduled to occur on or following April 30, 2020, will not be entitled to cancel and will not be eligible to receive a refund due to COVID-19.

This is very frustrating as their poly up to today (3/26) was to allow a FULL refund in case of a state of emergency.

sdedovic··on PureOS is convergent
This reminds me of a part of the Akka documentation about distributing your application across multiple machines:

> The key for enabling this is to go from remote to local by way of optimization instead of trying to go from local to remote by way of generalization. [1]

I think its analogous to this mobile/desktop "purist" OS. Specialize, don't generalize.

sdedovic··on Study Shows a Productivity Boost of Working From Home
I agree but I found a mixed strategy worked best. Monday, Friday in the office. Wednesday, Thursday out.

That way I can get a feel for the week on Monday and a retrospective on Friday. Plus Fridays is usually the "Culture Building" day (taking it easy, maybe having a beer in the afternoon, playing some board games). And Monday's are great to catch up with the team after the weekend, bring donuts or some snacks in the morning.

The middle of the week is when I can just work and be productive, as a developer.

Obviously this isn't a strict schedule. It's just definitely easier for me to pump out my own work at my pace, i.e. "Maker's Schedule". And there is absolutely value in being in the office with the team as you stated above.

sdedovic··on Be Kind
I'm currently working as a junior dev. Not by title, but by experience. Honestly, I appreciate getting a laundry list of fixes over none. I know either way I can be doing better. As for sounding harsh, I feel it's a very subjective thing.
