sdan··on Google Sunsets Google Cloud Print
Fastmail is amazing. I have like 20 domains I have from old side projects I can easily setup email + catchall addresses from and go wild with them. So much customization + UI doesn't look bad as Gmails (I switched after Gmail's horrid design update to include all that padding) and a ton of functionality with Apple/etc. devices.

And you can host websites directly from fastmail! Can't ask anything more from fastmail.

sdan··on The Serverless Revolution Has Stalled
To implement serverless, you'll need to re-architecture your entire infra. For that itself, I don't think it's worth it; because serverless is pretty much all event driven (which many things might be, but might not be able to fit on serverless; even it does, it might just be easier to plop it on a simple instance).

I do see a big potential for small and simple projects though. No need to setup instances and worry about networking: just deploy it and go.

sdan··on Open Source Tools and Data for Music Source Separation
Agree with these points; oddly I love instrumentals of a song than song w/vocals; and although Deezer is good, not good enough. Back to searching through sounds w/o vocals.
sdan··on Amazon Timestream is generally available
AWS looked at Timescale's new license and named their db Timestream. Haha, classic.
sdan··on What happened to Firefox Send?
Tried self hosting the day it came out. Had no luck, but i'm sure its possible given the docs.
sdan··on Luminar Plans $3.4B Reverse-Merger IPO
Not surprising imo. There are a lot of lidar companies that have come out and just like how self driving car teams/startups are almost required to be strapped with an OEM or big co (torc with mercedes, zoox with amazong for example), specialized lidar companies like Luminar and Ouster are pretty much on a straight path to a merger or acquisition.
sdan··on αcτµαlly pδrταblε εxεcµταblε
Haha yeah, I have the same question... normally Google Buckets are hosted under storage.googleapis.com/[your bucket] not under a subdomain...
sdan··on Launch HN: Nestybox (YC S20) – Containers beyond microservices
Doesn't Systemd use PID 1? Meaning you can't run it multiple times; are you utilizing the host's systemd then? In that case: why would I want to dockerize systemd services in the first place?
sdan··on Nano 5.0
I started using Nano because of the Digital Ocean blogs. I still use it 4 years later, everywhere from side projects to firefighting in production. It's so simple and easy to use and I'm looking forward to 5.0 changes!
sdan··on Domain-Oriented Microservice Architecture
Basically clumping microservices
sdan··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
Twitter says for account takeover hacks, their bounty is set at $7k.

$7k vs $100k, you choose.

sdan··on Passbolt: Self hostable, open source, password manager for teams
pass[0] has been the best of everything so far. gpg based and easy to use with keyboard shortcuts. i like alternatives like htis, but pass is super barebones and highly available.

sdan··on A $43,859.00 Refurbished Mac Pro
I'm guessing you can get (multiple) good nvidia cards to match apple's afterburner cards
sdan··on A $43,859.00 Refurbished Mac Pro
$5k max
sdan··on Journalist’s phone hacked: all he had to do was visit any website
This is obvious; just wondering what exactly they used.
sdan··on Don’t Fly During Ramadan (2013)
Just shows how much implicit (and in this case, explicit) bias there is
sdan··on Journalist’s phone hacked: all he had to do was visit any website
How’s this possible? Anyway this can be prevented?
sdan··on Microsoft is shutting down Mixer and partnering with Facebook Gaming
Yes. Applies to YouTube, Twitch, and other afaik.
sdan··on Show HN: InboxFee – make strangers pay for their cold emails
This was actually earn.com
sdan··on Why Full-Time 9 to 5 Jobs are Risky
One pays you $5, the other pays you $100k
sdan··on MakeSpace – Virtual Spatial Chat
How’s the performance?

I’d love to use it, but I’m afraid my low-end MBP will turn its fans to 1000%

sdan··on Show HN: Caliban, dead-easy Dockerized research workflows locally and on Cloud
Wow this is insanely cool. I haven't tried it out, but I have a similar setup, except its pretty unreliable and unsafe to use. This looks amazing!
sdan··on Intermittent fasting works – not only for weight loss but also for heart health
Found this reply kind of funny but also functional. Good points.
sdan··on Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chrome 85 address bar
Safari has an option to include the full URL. As a developer, I need the full URL so I turn on the option. If Chrome by some miracle actually goes through with this, I'll try to see if I can get around it (because at the end of the day, everyone uses chrome and chrome dev tools are by far the best).
sdan··on Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chrome 85 address bar
Don't think that would be the case. If anything it would only make the user focus on the domain to realize that it might not be legit.
sdan··on High-Resolution 3D Human Digitization
I've tried many of these papers, and they don't work outside their datasets.

Suppose you tried this on your own camera or maybe in a different lighting: it would totally break this.

Paper definitely seems like an improvement, but I guess no one should get excited to use this in experimentation/production.

sdan··on Dream Homes from the Past Century
Chilean house is literally just some glass and wood. Scary to think how people sleep in that.
sdan··on Show HN: Collected Notes – A note-taking blogging app I made
I think this is a great idea; makes you think why blogging isn't as easy as taking notes on Apple Notes.

Between the recent launch of Obsidian and this, I'm probably going to go with Obsidian particularly because: I know how to set up websites and I always trust offline more than online (I've lost multiple drafts on Substack which has taught me always to either use GDocs/Dropbox Paper/Offline text).

sdan··on Finally, I Closed My LinkedIn
I was thinking of closing my Linkedin, but it came down to this: Suppose I wanted to join a company / get to know someone and didn't realize that someone I already knew, knew them?

How could I figure out who knew who to give me warm intro w/o Linkedin? For that reason I'm probably going to keep my Linkedin until I find it unnecessary.

sdan··on USB-C is still a mess
I use my MacBook Pro charger with my xm3s regularly.

Charges super fast.
