Were you using a 1986/1987 386?

I know everyone has super rose tinted glasses when it comes to OS/2, but try it on period hardware, with what shipped in 1987. Its terrible. And yes it runs great on Pentiums or anything new under emulation as clearly the larger fault is 1987 hardware, namely the 386.

Look for PS/2 aix 1.3

It’s not very stable, although I don’t know if it was a flakey processor

scruffyherder··on Don't waste money on a math coprocessor they said
The 487 was the “full” replacement chip upgrade.

I still don’t know why the addition of the math coprocessor helped so much

scruffyherder··on Don't waste money on a math coprocessor they said
Yeah, although it was apparently really early 386 boards. I’m not sure how it would work electronically though.

I should do a tutorial on stealing the urban mech, and saving the chameleon!!

It’s so much better with those 2 mechs

I used a lot of compressed air on the socket and it made no difference.

Old DOS 5 ran fine along with OS/2 1.21. The upgrade to 6.123 went fine, it’s just something else weird .

Sadly I don’t know if any other 386 fans to give this a shot

I just got a newer cpu today I just wanted to write something out as I wasn’t expecting this kind of response.

There is no problem with the drive on dos, windows or os/2 1.2 so it’s something about it being an early 2.0 beta and probably an older 386 cpu.

How big was the database? that database 'engine' thing is free for DB's under 2GB back in the SQL 7 days.
scruffyherder··on Windows NT 3.1 on Dec Alpha AXP
Itanium XP was weird, it's like that super early AMD64 version where more of the OS is 32bit than 64bit, with no high theming.

It was still exciting at the time.

scruffyherder··on Windows NT 3.1 on Dec Alpha AXP
Had DEC no cancelled, NT would have never been, and Gates wouldn't have had the confidence to abandon OS/2.

So in the end we all won, just Dec had to die.

But DEC only saw Altavista as a toy, something for showing off big systems, or doing personal desktop search. The missed such incredible opportunity.

scruffyherder··on Windows NT 3.1 on Dec Alpha AXP
Was the HAL really that compilcated?

It was listed as one of the reasons why Compaq had bailed on NT.

Also were you involved at all with the 64bit versions of NT?

It's cool that checked build got out, and kind of funny how the compiler was hiding in plain sight for decades, but glad I spotted it.

scruffyherder··on Windows NT 3.1 on Dec Alpha AXP
damn so many potential questions, but I don't know if you can answer any as I know most people that were in those pivotal years are so cagey about it.
scruffyherder··on Windows NT 3.1 on Dec Alpha AXP
i'd probably blame the compiler. It's a weird mess of DEC objects being glued together to run on NT (Like the MIPS/PPC ones too). And if you wanted to make anything that for sure ran on all CPU type's you'd build /Od. Doing /O2 or /Ox was a recipe to run nowhere.

The real shame is that 64bit beta compiler does such a substantially better job on the Alpha, but like everything else once everything started to gel, it suddenly imploded.

scruffyherder··on 64bit computing on a budget
Instead, I got one with a different CPU architecture, at a comparable price which was my goal.

The unlock took the most amount of time.

The larger point is a comparison of AXP64, and ARM64. AMD64 hardware is pretty much easy to find, and not all that interesting.

Not to mention it takes up no space.

scruffyherder··on 64bit computing on a budget
Indeed.

I thought it was a fun distraction, as it's not often you get to recycle some old junk, and mix it with new software.

This thing with a cracked screen had zero viable future.

thanks? lol

Drivers are always the issue, but Windows gets security updates.

I was worried it was stolen, but it was not. I reached out to him, and he did contact Xiaomi, but that went nowhere. So he gave me a password to try and it worked, so I could log him out after giving him the account number, and he could then retrieve all his lost data, so it was a win/win.

He had migrated all his google data but didn't realize there was more to it than that. It was innocent enough, not every used phone is stolen.

But it's something to be mindful of, that a 'working phone' may in fact be locked.

It almost never renders on my iphone correctly. I can't make updates or changes on the road.

As of now there is only MIPS.

The OpenGL is more 1.0 than 1.1... so it makes for interesting ports. I need to touch on that one too. so much to do..

es40 also seems to use lot of the same ideas

I need to blog more on it but finding this 64bit alpha kind of was a big surprisie and has eaten more of my time.

Ive been trying to figure out how the clarcrom.exe is decompressed, and comparing it to the cl67srmrom.exe

I'm not entirely sure the es40 can even go into alphabios. it may all be a redherring.

I found an ascii string 'WimC' that seems to start the compressed data, but a simple copy/paste ended in the program terminating.

I have found an old branch of qemu that claimed to support ARC, but it didnt do anything. I'm at a loss on where or how to proceede.

If you can try to help, as always much appreciated?!

Maybe you can have better luck contacting Tristan Gingold

So I have to ask, were you swept up in the Compaq merger? No doubt NT on alpha wasn't a big seller, the fact the 64bit compiler was hiding in plain sight pretyt much sums that up. But it had to be a simple sales # thing when they killed NT on Alpha?

It all just seems such bad timing, especially the way Itanium flopped, But I don't think Compaq could compete with AMD and the hammer.

I think it's how they got Cutler to come over. And of course Cutler didn't come alone.

Thank you for thinking opt out censorship in the so called 'free world' is a good thing.

It's a shame so many western people rally around their censorship, their restrictions, and act all surprised that their sites get blocked in the east.

scruffyherder··on A cautionary tale from the decline of SourceForge
They got bought out and not only was the adware removed, the guy was fired.

If anything the lesson is there is never a follow up or redemption arc for giving stuff away for free.

The plus is all the trendy concern trolls are on Github, so I live peacefully among the ancient ruins of sourceforge.net

scruffyherder··on The best engineering interview question I've ever gotten
It's why despite constantly being asked to interview at FANG I don't, as I just don't feel like dealing with that kind of stress. I prefer to stagnante to being obsolete where I am.

I saved up enough that I paid off my house and I opened a bar. I just don't have the heart for the /r/iamverysmart crowd, that always paints themselves into the same corners because "neat and new", or dealing with more political crap where the customer is never a thought in their equation
