scrps··on Fallout from the AWS outage: Smart mattresses go rogue
Just put the printer precariously close to an open window on a high floor and threaten it with a performance review every once and a while.
scrps··on Postman which I thought worked locally on my computer, is down
I really like that, a scaling license!

I have a suggestion:

Under pricing for the hobby tier you could add as free or pay what you want. $50/yr isn't crazy but might get a few smaller donations if that was an avenue.

scrps··on When a stadium adds AI to everything, it's worse experience for everyone
Tangential: Can someone more in the know answer this for me? What happened to RFID for things like this? I know it is used elsewhere but it seems like that would be a much faster and lighter weight solution for self-checkout.
scrps··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Security through obscurity mostly, I don't know who continues to push the advice to block ICMP without a valid technical reason since at best if you tilt your head and squint your eyes you could almost maybe see a (very new) script kiddie being defeated by it.

I've rarely actually seen that advice anywhere, more so 20 years ago than now but people are still clearly getting it from circles I don't run in.

scrps··on Ask HN: How to stop an AWS bot sending 2B requests/month?
Singapore's comms regulator bans porn (even possessing it), serve up some softcore to the bot, e-mail the regulator and AWS.
scrps··on TiVo exiting legacy DVR business
I once had a NAS entirely comprised of salvaged TiVo drives that ran for a surprisingly long time. For some reason around '04 I kept finding them in curb trash walking down the street, a lot were direct tv branded iirc. Never really found out why but also didn't look very hard.

Ironically never once actually used a TiVo but still RIP was a cool idea and I got free drives out of it.

scrps··on German government comes out against Chat Control
The tinfoil hat treatment is due to the fact that these days everything that fits the mould of a conspiracy theory is dismissed simply for fitting the mould of a conspiracy theory. In the same time as this cultural headspace was being cultivated in the US:

A billionaire pedophile ran a covert sex ring with a suspected who's who of a client list who was almost barely prosecuted for "reasons™"

Social media companies caught red-handed psychologically manipulating users for various ends

Damn near everyone helping to destroy actual free speech and privacy willingly because they've been talked into it (ironic)

Governments that engage in mass surveillance so egregious if you had tried it 40 years ago there would have been an uprising. Aided by the tech community I might add.

Industries that abuse data and algorithms to manipulate pricing or commit outright fraud.

A pharma corp addicting countless americans to opioids with almost no real consequence, killing hundreds of thousands and ruining millions of families.

Several industries have poisoned the planet and its inhabitants in various long term ways for profit.

And yet if you suggest something is a conspiracy it is dismissed as the ravings of a lunatic. Speaking of conspiracies that doesn't sound like an accident... The trick to conspiracy theories is critical thinking and not uncritical dismissal.

If I have any words of consolation: when the "conspiracy theory" turns out to be more practice than theory you get to say I told you so.

Edit: typo

scrps··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
Anyone still using windows should plug that hole and switch to linux or apple.

If you are trapped on windows due to a specific piece of software running a virtual machine on linux is your friend. Boot up windows only when you need it and the only thing MS gets is one datastream of your single use of their product and not your entire digital existence. Same also applies for Apple + vm.

Either choice on its worst day is better than what windows has become on it's best.

scrps··on It's just a virus, the E.R. told him – days later, he was dead
Or alternatively foreign countries don't value their doctors enough for them to stick around and so they don't... Are you saying someone is suggesting forcing them to come to the west or should people not be allowed to move where they want and can contribute? The US needs more doctors and if there are foreign trained qualified doctors they should be able to practice, healthcare is a free market system or so I am told, labor goes where it gets paid.

Also given the much higher wages in the west, sending a portion to relatives back home often does quite a bit to alleviate suffering and stimulate some economic activity.

On top of all of that the US govt could step in an increase supply of doctors in various ways, the medical industry could stop artificially keeping supply low to drive wages up, the medical industry could totally opt out of a free market model and operate like a public service. I am sure there are plenty of different solutions I am leaving off.

scrps··on Aaaan.net
http://aaaan.net/about/

I don't blame you if you couldn't find it, it is under menu then you have to checkbox AAAAN.NET then (on mobile) hit the menu button on the bottom which should load those tagged posts and find the about post... The UX is something on that site. And no https to boot.

scrps··on WireGuard topologies for self-hosting at home
STUN and TURN is what tail/headscale use, basically you can use whatever you want to map ports but if you want to hole-punch you are probably going to have to use something off the shelf or write your own client to integrate wg and the hole-punching logic.
scrps··on OpenFront Has Been Stolen
Don't forget GPG! Bunch of dirty hippie export control dodging hooligans! (/s)
scrps··on If you are harassed by lasers
Not to hijack your post with a PSA but I think you'll endorse it...

If you are building a product and it has any indicator lights please dim/diffuse/lightpipe them.

It seems to be a trend these days of ultra bright LEDs for indicators, I have so many devices I've either disconnected, dimmed or taped over the LEDs because it is so bloody bright.

scrps··on US airlines are pushing to remove protections for passengers and add more fees
Don't forget the inverse can happen, like when tech-bros read sci-fi and end up thinking Bad Thing is a good idea... :|
scrps··on Selling numbered rocks, you get whatever's next in sequence
Yeah but where is the blog post about bootstrapping webscale rocks from the ground up? Where are the growth hacks? This could be a tectonic shift in the startup ecosystem. Watching this thread you guys rock!

Quick question... Have you considered letting customers come mine their own rocks?

scrps··on AI is ushering in a “tiny team” era
Are there any projects working on models for business management? I feel for skilled technical people the benefit would be from off-loading a lot of the management side and let them focus on the hard problems.
scrps··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
I pay for youtube with generous monthly donations to ad-block devs and list maintainers... Also how about all the ads on paid services now?

Oh and I pay for plenty of services just not from vampires like youtube who rip off the actual talent and hold their audience captive.

Arrr Matey, the sails may have been luffin but they be full again!

scrps··on Mysterious New Jersey drone sightings prompt call for 'state of emergency'
It's planes from most of the footage I saw, at best maybe there was A legit unknown drone flown over some sensitive site (which happens) and someone hyped it into hysteria probably fueling trolls with drones to add to it.

Also iirc there is a funding bill for anti-drone programs gummed up in congress so I am sure anyone looking to get it passed isn't in a rush to quell this just yet.

The government will finally get all these local yokel politicians to put a cork in it and stop fanning hysteria when some idiot puts a bullet hole in a cessna thinking it is an Iranian drone from a mothership off the east coast.

scrps··on Nyxt: The Hacker's Browser
Just clustering, which makes sense, as far as I can see peeking at the code. Whole codebase is lisp which I don't have a ton of experience with so caveat emptor.

https://github.com/atlas-engineer/nyxt/tree/master/libraries...

scrps··on Brits are scrolling away from X and aren't that interested in AI
Gonna be fun to see the results of cases like "I didn't defraud the company, gen AI did!" Of which I suspect some will actually be fraud and some not but I don't envy the lawyer who has to explain neuronal computation to a nontechnical person.
scrps··on Yi Peng 3 crossed both cables C-Lion 1 and BSC at times matching when they broke
So the Russians who are at this point highly dependant on Daddy Xi to keep their economy and military afloat are gonna false flag the West to suck China into a quagmire of a war a few months before the most unpredictable and venomously anti-china president (who has thin skin, a hair trigger, and no qualms about conducting airstrikes on high-ranking Iranian generals unilaterally on a whim) in modern US history is about to take office at the head of a country with the largest functioning stockpile of nuclear weapons and a massive military? You think Chinese intelligence is asleep at the wheel and wouldn't notice given the stakes and absurd levels of geopolitical risk the entire planet is at?

China may back Russia to try to shift perception of the west's military might/will or to drain resources or just to buy Russia by making them dependant to get those juicy Russian natural resources but they aren't going to start world war iii to help Putin with his fetishistic "yet another European dictator" fantasy.

The Chinese know how to play the game same as the Russians and the US. All these little games are just calibrated psyops, why destroy, very publicly, comms lines when tapping it would be far more beneficial to a war effort and much quieter? Maybe to make the West look weak and unable to defend their borders which affects consequences domestically like say channeling political support to isolationist politicians who want to retreat from supporting Ukraine? Cause those politicians didn't make gains in the last European elections or nothing.

scrps··on Two undersea cables in Baltic Sea disrupted
There are sadly a lot of Chamberlains these days with the wool pulled over their eyes.
scrps··on Drinking water systems for 26M Americans face high cybersecurity risks
https://www.wired.com/story/oldsmar-florida-water-utility-ha...
scrps··on Trump wins presidency for second time
The average voter isn't going to make that distinction, they are just going to equate it to "in power, didn't deliver".
scrps··on Australia proposes ban on social media for those under 16
Hell of a time to run a VPN or a blackmail service... Porn site profiles with activity history + real traceable identities will make the Ashley Madison leak look quaint.
scrps··on Trump wins presidency for second time
If the GOP sweeps both chambers and form a supermajority they will be in the position where they are expected to deliver what their constituents were promised without any opposition. Hell of a tight-rope given the scale of their promises and how rabidly sure the GOP base is on their ability to deliver.
scrps··on Quit Social Media (2016)
That may be but it doesn't take much page turning in a history book to find plenty of instances where society has been very wrong and not even in the distant past.

Society changes slowly. The iterative speed of computers, the iterative speed of feedback on a global communications network based on those computers is new, it has many orders of magnitude faster response times than society's ability to adapt to the changes it brings and the systemic study of human behavior over years and years leading to mathematical models of behavior and responses has created massive information asymmetry in society and the scale of manipulation a small group of people can leverage is astounding, being skeptical of society's value propositions seems in order.

scrps··on Show HN: Agent.exe, a cross-platform app to let 3.5 Sonnet control your machine
Set a job to have it reboot the system, set it to run on boot, achieve AI-hyped useless machine!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Useless_machine

scrps··on Ask HN: Website with 6^16 subpages and 80k+ daily bots
Clearly adjust glasses as an HN amateur color theorist[1] I am shocked and quite frankly appalled that you wouldn't also link to LAB, HSV, and CMYK equivalents, individually of course! /s

That should generate you some link depth for the bots to burn cycles and bandwidth on.

[1]: Not even remotely a color theorist

scrps··on Unicode uses elephants as baseline comparison of cultural frequency for emoji
Turns out Big Taco's (/s) fingers were in the guac:
