scottndecker··on Ask HN: Why is my conversion rate so low for my real estate startup?
Maybe a US thing? Yes, people do this. Quite a bit right now especially because there is a supply shortage so buyers are desperate to find houses for sale. Not unheard to get bid out by cash buyers going well above asking price. So the possibility of finding a home you love before it's listed on the MLS is attractive to buyers.
scottndecker··on Ask HN: Why is my conversion rate so low for my real estate startup?
Yeah, same in USA in regards to most people using real estate agents. But lots of people are sending letters right now due to the supply shortage. This is a more convenient way to do it.

a) you can do it entirely from your computer

b) you don't have to drive anywhere or go door-to-door

c) you get feedback on who opened and read your letter

d) you're guaranteed it'll go to the homeowner, not just the tenant (if it's being rented out at the time)

e) you get a professional introduction that signals to the homeowner that you're serious; more so than someone that just prints off 50 copies of a letter on their home printer and drops them like flyers on doorsteps.

scottndecker··on Ask HN: Why is my conversion rate so low for my real estate startup?
Ok, so you're saying remove the phone number question? It's optional and we have a public flow where you don't register till most of the way thru (click Send Letter button on home page without being logged in and you'll see what I mean).

Thank you for the feedback! Keep it coming!

scottndecker··on River Runner: drop a raindrop anywhere in the USA, watch where it ends up
This is outstanding. Great job. Can't wait to show the kids when they wake up to better explain the continental divide here in Colorado.
scottndecker··on Ask HN: Have you ever spotted yourself on a website?
Exactly what I'm talking about. That's awesome. Of anything it could've been, love that it was your tractor.
scottndecker··on Ask HN: What do you hate about Slack?
The expectation of a quick reply
scottndecker··on Pitching your early stage startup
Interesting that these were the four types of businesses called out:

1 - B2B SaaS sold on the low-touch model, like Basecamp

2 - B2B SaaS sold on a high-touch model, like Salesforce

3 - Mobile apps

4 - Ad-supported websites

What happened to B2C website where the C actually pays the B for a service?

scottndecker··on Phones and apps reduce your ability to focus even when they don’t distract you
The LightPhone is working on getting there. I've been using it for about a year now as my primary mobile.

Azure AD down. We started getting impacted around 420pm CT.
scottndecker··on 91% of plastic isn't recycled (2018)
This. Most plastics can't be recycled; it was a PR play by the plastic industry decades ago. Using plastics for such things as medical devices and such makes complete sense to me. Using plastics for items which inherently are only used for a few minutes or an hour (see the F&B industry) makes no sense at all to me.
scottndecker··on I made a simple geolocation service
MaxMind data accurate to the zip code level only about 30-60% of the time (as compared with what Google's Geolocation service will provide which is based off more data points than just IP address). Only use MaxMind if you're looking for region or country level accuracy.
scottndecker··on I Got My Attention Back (2017)
I installed a small switch from Home Depot in line with the power to my router so I can turn it off at any point and it takes a few minutes to power back on (which is good that it takes a bit). No signal in the house at night. Easy way to control access for all parties in the house. I like his idea of no internet till after lunch.

Copy what Jim Krazinski did for Some Good News
scottndecker··on Ask HN: Why does Hiring thread always top out at developer?
Agreed, but then there should be about 10 VP positions on the Hiring thread (since there are a hundred dev positions). Not sure I've ever seen even one.
scottndecker··on Ask HN: Why does Hiring thread always top out at developer?
Ctrl + f on the page https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22465476. Seems pretty trustworthy to do a word count.
scottndecker··on Ask HN: I think I’ve burnt out. What should I do?
Yeah, for sure. It's a judgment call on if you're overloading or not. The point is to find something you're excited about. Not a million things you're excited about.
scottndecker··on Ask HN: I think I’ve burnt out. What should I do?
In my experience, when I'm burnt out, I find a new side project to get excited about. Excitement in one area of my life bleeds into others. I've worked on new apps, starting a company, woodworking projects, training my dog. Whatever it is, find something that awakens you again. It's best if you can see it possibly leading to a new career. That way it'll give you hope for and ownership over your future.

AWS 2006: "Run your workloads on our EC2 instances in the cloud 24/7."

AWS 2014: "Run your work loads on serverless so you don't have to deal with those pesky EC2 instances 24/7 anymore."

AWS 2019: "Click a checkbox and you can have your serverless workloads get dedicated EC2 instances 24/7!"

scottndecker··on Ask HN: What are the most fundamental books on computer science?
Not sure I'd say "fundamental" but possibly the one I refer junior developers to the most often is Clean Code
scottndecker··on Most popular programming languages on Stack Overflow since Sept 2008 [video]
Very true. There comes a point where most of the problems/algorithms have already been asked and figured out (or deemed not possible).
scottndecker··on Burnout – All-in-one workspace for startups
Agreed. Feels like something got lost in translation and they meant for the concept of burndown.
scottndecker··on Judge claims mobile phone is not a computer
I'd like to hear the judge's thoughts on phablets and tablets. Is it the physical keyboard that makes it a computer?
scottndecker··on Is Google evil? (2017)
Author lists some potential solutions but fails to mention the Brave browser (brave.com), which I think is pioneering much of what they're talking about.
scottndecker··on Airbnb threatening me over my domain. Legit?
Yeah, I've heard of Disney having to do similar things. Not allowing kids to make home made tshirts with Mickey Mouse on them, etc or someone else could claim they aren't defending it and do something worse.

Agreed it feels like a canned message and I'm tempted to ignore it since I clearly have no ill intent towards Airbnb.

scottndecker··on Airbnb threatening me over my domain. Legit?
Interesting. So basically no one can ever use the letters "airbnb" in a domain ever again so long as Airbnb continues to exist? I get companies need to defend their copywrite, and a site called airebnb.com that's mean to look just like the legit site definitely crosses the line, likely has malicious intent, etc. This just feels a little bit like a stretch considering how different the domain is.
scottndecker··on Living without the modern browser
If "the most effective thing is going to be an ad blocker" then I'd encourage people to check out the Brave Browser (https://brave.com/) which has ad blocker built in and will actually pay you for viewing ads.
scottndecker··on It's like Airbnb for your dog
I'm the creator. Happy to take suggestions on other items to fill in the blanks with or answer any questions you have. The idea was to have it generate random pairings to help me think of new startup ideas.
scottndecker··on This Marketing Blog Does Not Exist

scottndecker··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2019)
Sounds interesting. Do you have anything more senior available? a la Enterprise Architect, Director level, etc?
