scoodah··on Core I9 14900KF Breaks World Record, Almost Achieves 9.1GHz (2023)
Again bringing it back to the drag racing analogy… you wouldn’t commute to work in a drag racer. Thats not the point. The point is to push the hardware to the point of absurdity, just like drag racing. If extreme overlocking isn’t for you then that’s fine.
scoodah··on Passwordless: a different kind of hell?
Apple Pay is one of the (few) things where that is not the case. New phone = manually re-adding cards to Apple Pay. Get an Apple Watch? It does not get your Apple Pay info until you manually add them to the watch.
scoodah··on 11-year-old YouTube video that always remains at 301 views
That’s a heavy claim to drop with no proof.
scoodah··on Typing fast is about latency, not throughput
I say programming is more about thought than typing and I stand by it. The thing is, the level of typing you need to achieve to get to the point where typing is no longer the bottleneck in your flow is such a low bar. I have not worked with a single developer in my career where their ability to type has been a bottleneck for their work. I know anecdotes aren’t evidence. Don’t get me wrong, I believe being a strong typist has a ton of benefits for a developer. It just seems like a baseline skill at a certain point for anyone in a software related field.
scoodah··on Dave Cutler on Windows [video]
I actually have been checking out his channel after watching the Dave Cutler interview and he generally has level headed takes about Linux from what I’ve watched. That comment is… a doozy though.

But generally it seems like he uses all three of Linux, Windows, and Mac and talks positively about each of the three.

On top of that, Carmack was essentially the singular engineer on his projects. Most others were concerned with making levels, assets, music, etc. There were others (sorry Abrash and Cash) in the codebase but it was largely John. Which means his bus factor was insanely high. He was the definition of a silo of knowledge. He also used this to his advantage, knowing the company could not replace him. Most projects of a certain size cannot and do not want that dynamic. It is not a healthy dynamic once there’s some number of people working in close proximity.

Yes and your dog does that because it’s scared and stressed out. Why is that an acceptable thing to subject animals to willingly?
scoodah··on Ubuntu Plans to Ditch Its ‘Minimal’ Install Option
In my experience I’ve not had any issues finding resources and materials for most anything I want to do with Fedora.

That said I also migrated from Arch to Fedora when I needed to pick between Ubuntu and Fedora for work, so I was used to being a bit more hands on to begin with.

Not only making the default FF experience emphatically worse but downright broken for some use cases.

I work in an environment where I have to auth to web services with a smart card. This is just not possible with Snap FF.

scoodah··on Best Practices for Securing SSH
A client I work with uses Appgate SDP which uses SPA to do exactly that. I haven’t seen SPA come up often other than that.

For this particular client it was a hard requirement for them to even consider allowing access from public internet.

scoodah··on Defending software build pipelines from malicious attack
I’m currently contributing to an open source project that aims to tackle the chain of custody and ensuring steps happened by trusted functionaries. It’s a very interesting problem to be working on but the more you dig in the more you realize how daunting and terrifying the problem set is.
scoodah··on Gitlab is moving to a three-tier product subscription model
What's the justification for the self-managed and SaaS products being priced the same? That isn't intended to be snarky but a legitimate question, by the way.
