Thanks for confirming! Pretty amazing what some well-placed caching can do.
sciurus··on eBPF will help solve service mesh by getting rid of sidecars
> a trace-id is carried over via an HTTP header from the entry point of the request until the last service that takes part in that request.

But it's not, unless you specifically code your services to do that. Which isn't hard, but just means plugging an unmodified service into a service mesh isn't enough.

sciurus··on eBPF will help solve service mesh by getting rid of sidecars
You described the problem correctly.

I think it's a stretch to say that requires a client library, though. It should be straightforward to have whatever library you are already using for http requests pass those headers through.

sciurus··on Issues with Cloudflare Images
Your post leaves it a little bit unclear what you actually did.

Are you saying that

1. Originally all requests for images went directly to the egregiously-priced image host

2. You changed that traffic to be routed through Cloudflare instead so it would be cached

3. That reduced requests to your image host enough to cut your bill by 99%

sciurus··on Amazon packages pile up after AWS outage spawns delivery havoc
Shutting down availability zones I could almost see, since it's not that much more difficult or expensive to architect to handle that gracefully.

But an entire region? I've never worked anywhere that decided being multi-region was a good tradeoff. At best we've replicated data to another region and had some of our management services there, so in the absolute worst case (which would need to be much worse than yesterday) we could rebuild our product's infrastructure there.

Do I agree with this approach? Not in all possible cases of course, but for my employers? Overall, yes. It mitigates the highest impact risks. Going further would have significant complexity and costs. Those companies success or failure haven't been impacted by their multi-region strategy AFAICT.

sciurus··on NIST is broadcasting a test signal on minute 8 of the hour on WWV and 48 on WWVH
I think most automatic clocks are setting themselves based on WWVB, not WWV.

It broadcasts on longwave rather than shortwave and uses a different modulation.

sciurus··on NIST is broadcasting a test signal on minute 8 of the hour on WWV and 48 on WWVH
I think you meant megahertz, not kilohertz.

The human-readable broadcasts are at 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 MHz.

It can if you go deeper and understand the why behind the answer. The problem is that it's possible to memorize what the right answer is without understanding the material at all.

sciurus··on How death rates from Covid-19 differ between vaccinated and unvaccinated
It sounds like you agree that "vaccination doesn't protect you from getting infected and infecting others", the statement I was responding to, is wrong.

I think fixating on the limits of vaccination rather then the benefits is misleading. Vaccination works, yet many people think it does not due to this rhetoric.

sciurus··on How death rates from Covid-19 differ between vaccinated and unvaccinated
This is one of the factors discussed at https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/math-covid-vaccinatio... , which is a nice overview of how innumeracy helps fuel covid misinformation.
sciurus··on How death rates from Covid-19 differ between vaccinated and unvaccinated
> vaccination ... doesn't protect you from getting infected and infecting others

Thankfully, this is wrong on both counts.

1) Vaccinated people are significantly less likely to contract the virus

2) Breakthrough infections are significantly less contagious than infections in nonimmune persons

There's a good article diving into this at https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/11/22/most-pern...

Why do you describe it as less directly related to squid and varnish? I haven't worked with ATS before, but it's documentation describes it as "a high-performance web proxy cache that improves network efficiency and performance by caching frequently-accessed information at the edge of the network" which makes it seem to fill a similar role as them.
sciurus··on Aurora Forecast
I'm a fan of https://www.solarham.net/ , which includes an aurora forecast as well as other space weather info.

I'm guessing this is showing up now because a Strong (G3) Geomagnetic Storm watch is ongoing, which could lead to the aurora being visible at lower latitudes. To quote them, "Should a G3 level storm materialize, visual aurora will likely be seen for locations as far south as 50 degrees geomagnetic latitude or beyond (Oregon, Nebraska, Pennsylvania etc). For now we wait."

sciurus··on New PostgreSQL Interface for Cloud Spanner
> To enable PostgreSQL tools that don’t know anything about Spanner, the PostgreSQL interface also includes an open-source adapter that runs as a sidecar proxy, close to a client.

I wonder why they decided to do this instead of building a postgres-compatible endpoint into the spanner service itself.

sciurus··on Firefox 93
This is on the right track but a bit confused. There are two entities:

1) The nonprofit Mozilla foundation

2) The Mozilla corporation

The foundation owns the corporation.

The corporation develops Firefox and is primarily funded by the Google search deal. It also develops pocket and the VPN and gets some funding from their sales.

The foundation is funded by grants and donations, both from individuals and from other organizations (including from the corporation).
