schrodingersCat··on Senator Rand Paul: We Must Demilitarize the Police
While I feel that the senator is likely using this event to get back onto a national soapbox, I completely agree with the argument he presents and that the issue of a militarized police force is problematic as a whole. I hope this becomes an issue that voter start caring about in the 2014 or 2016 elections.
schrodingersCat··on Colgate Total Ingredient Linked to Hormones, Cancer Spotlights FDA Process
Soaps containing triclosan...

Toxicity is usually not contained to just one cell-type or organ. My point is that given the past toxicological evidence for this compound, this story should not come as a surprise to anyone.

schrodingersCat··on Colgate Total Ingredient Linked to Hormones, Cancer Spotlights FDA Process
Yes, it really is a problem. And using distilled water won't help as chloride ions are naturally in saliva (http://books.google.com/books?id=LKy0weDEFp8C&pg=PA601&lpg=P...).
schrodingersCat··on Colgate Total Ingredient Linked to Hormones, Cancer Spotlights FDA Process
I do appreciate knowing that this ingredient is in Colgate Total. That tube is getting thrown out!

Let be clear, this is really old news. Here are a couple HN threads on the topic:

schrodingersCat··on You’re 16. You’re a Pedophile. You Don’t Want to Hurt Anyone. What Do You Do?
Dan Savage coined the term "gold star pedophile" for these types of people (http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/SavageLove?oid=12927907). I'm really glad that we (as a society) are beginning to discuss this problem rather than sweep it under the rug by locking people up. It truly is a mental health issue, and we need to ask the question of whether or not we want to lock people up for trying to do the right thing by seeking proper treatment.
schrodingersCat··on Ask HN: What is the best laptop for Linux?
That's a good point. Given that I seriously never use my TB port, I totally forgot that driver support is not great. Rumor has it that the existing patches (https://github.com/anoever/thunderbolt) will make it into the 3.17 mainline.

And I'll have to check out the X1. Thanks for the tip!

schrodingersCat··on Ask HN: What is the best laptop for Linux?
In general, macs have great linux hardware support. Also, they have an unrivaled track pad. Seriously, I will keep buying macbooks until I find another multi-touch track pad that is better. Btw, does anybody know of one? To tzury's point, the "homebrew" package manager basically makes it so a mac can act as a decent dev machine. Virtualbox will help fill in those gaps. FWIW, check out the Dell XPS 13 developer edition: http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/xps-13-linux/pd.aspx. It comes from the factory with Ubuntu loaded and supposedly good developer friendly features
schrodingersCat··on A truck driver uncovers secrets about the first nuclear bombs (2008)
I had not caught this article when it was originally published. Thanks for the share! I really like how one man, with a lot of time on his hands, could reverse engineer the designs of some of the most secret weapons ever created.

schrodingersCat··on Soylent Survivor: one month living on lab-made liquid nourishment
> "The [oil blend] bottles look like those travel-size shampoos you find at drug stores or in hotel rooms; they’re convenient, but they seem wasteful since you’re unscrewing one and throwing it away every single day."

Essential fats (polyunsaturated fatty acids) oxidize when they come in contact with the air. Not individually packaging these would be a mistake since the oil would go rancid by day 5.

schrodingersCat··on How PornHub is bringing its A-game (SFW) – Moz
I've found myself re-blogging/sharing some of PH's tweets simply because they are funny. Even female friends (not the typical demographic for this site IMO) really enjoy them as well. This marketing strategy is smart and does help remove the stigma surround the industry.
schrodingersCat··on Why All the Snowden Docs Should Be Public: An Interview with Cryptome
Thanks for this post! Really enjoyed the article. I've always been a regular reader of cryptome, but I really wish they would re-enable their RSS feed as I would love to have this come to my feedly. PS: If anyone from cryptome is reading, I would pay for this service. Seriously.

schrodingersCat··on “Severe” password manager attacks steal digital keys and data en masse
To understand this in context, check out this recent LastPass blog post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8022543. One of these vulnerabilities (an insecure version of a bookmarklet) has been known to security researchers for about a year. Though LP claims that this is not serious, this article points out that there are much larger problems going on here. Comment from LP would be helpful.

I think you meant to say "Lisp OS" in the headline. Nice post otherwise. Thanks!

I did my best not to editorialize the headline. Editors, please feel free to change to something more appropriate. I posted this because Max's original post had so much interest here.

schrodingersCat··on Raspberry Pi B+
Yes! USB 3.0 would be great too. I almost forgot 1 feature: SATA / mSTA. I'm sure there are power reasons for not wanting to do this, but mSATA SSDs have gotten so cheap that I think a dual core RPi with a SSD would make a nice media center / web browsing machine.
schrodingersCat··on Raspberry Pi B+
From this datasheet (http://docs-europe.electrocomponents.com/webdocs/12de/090076...)

"Broadcom BCM2835 SoC 700 MHz Low Power ARM1176JZFS Applications Processor 512MB SDRAM Boots from Micro SD card, running a version of the Linux operating system"

This is basically just a new footprint on the model B. I like the fact that there are more USB ports, I'm not sure I understand the point since there's only a limited amount of power this thing can provide. I guess if you are one of these people who always needs a breadboard / shield for expansion purposes, this will be quite useful. I'm personally disappointed that there's not an update to the SoC. Maybe there will be a model C? One can only hope.

My wishlist for a "Model C": >1gb RAM, 2 /4 core SoC, Improved graphics, ~$50-$75 price point

schrodingersCat··on A Note from LastPass
While I do appreciate this disclosure, I'm not sure doing so a year later warrants much applause. While I agree this is a vulnerability that only effect a small subset of users (<1%), this actual number of users could be large depending on the size of their customer base (likely tens of thousands).
schrodingersCat··on Sum from 1 to 100 at DuckDuckGo
When you combine this with the duckduckgo CLI app "DDG" (https://pypi.python.org/pypi/ddg/0.2.0), I can see some scripting applications for this. I love ddg and learning new capabilities. Thanks for this!
schrodingersCat··on Citizen Mapping Movements to Monitor Water Quality, Radiation and Fracking
Thank you for the share. This is similar to crowd-sourced efforts in Japan (http://nuclear-news.net/2013/05/18/the-japan-nuclear-crowd-m...) that really have been critical to understanding the extent of the radioactive contamination TEPCO has not exactly been forthright. This is a great way to keep the oil / gas companies honest and raise awareness.

schrodingersCat··on Daskeyboard 4 Professional
This is a great design! I agree that this would be useful for anyone who is 1) Design conscious, and 2) enjoys typing on a mechanical keyboard (quite superior IMO). Will this ever be Available in DVORAK layout? Or, is this keyboard capable of being taken apart to change the layout (a pain, but I'm willing)?
