scalablenotions··on Growers Are Beaming Over the Success of Lasers to Stave Off Birds
Headlines 10 years from now: "Scientists mystified by 'bird blindness' colony collapse" "Laser manufacturers found to be spending millions on lobbyist groups"
scalablenotions··on Guidelines for Brutalist Web Design
It seems like a any particular fad in UI design has just enough time to get well-defined before it goes out of fashion.
scalablenotions··on How to make MongoDB not suck for analytics
What about Managed solutions, like DynamoDB? What could be easier than that - with cloud scale analytics opportunities to boot.
scalablenotions··on Are we stuck with cement?
Let's see. Can you move your feet?
scalablenotions··on AI winter is well on its way
A real Winter is a lack of warmth. An AI winter is a lack of ______
scalablenotions··on Subscription Hell
I'd be interested in an 'aggregator' service where I can subscribe to sections that interest me from a number of agencies.
scalablenotions··on You Probably Don't Need a Blockchain
We are working on it, so watch this space. The power consumption will not increase linearly, because of tier 2 & 3 solutions. The key is that blockchain is automated. With traditional centralised trust systems, you need buildings full of people running everything.
scalablenotions··on You Probably Don't Need a Blockchain
I read the article. The disclaimer is both inadequate and a poor substitute for a humbler article.

Disclaimer: Just saying.

scalablenotions··on You Probably Don't Need a Blockchain
If you compare the energy consumption of traditional banking systems to Bitcoin, you will realise how very efficient blockchain is.
scalablenotions··on You Probably Don't Need a Blockchain
It would be nice if this was called, "Why would I need a Blockchain?" or something. It's pretty clear the author hasn't gone deep enough to tell other people how relevant Blockchain might be to their lives. A change in title/tone would avoid the crimes of confidence.
scalablenotions··on Bitcoin has little shot at ever being a major global currency
This is laughable. Bitcoin is already a major global currency. The sixth largest by circulation.
scalablenotions··on New fake SegWit2X: premining millions

scalablenotions··on My personal site is a terminal
"Just one thing" - I'm sure Karl knows this is not fully-fledged, bug-free terminal.

Great concept Karl, I think you're a no-brainer hire for anyone who wants to add out-of-the box problem-solving to their team, since you just hacked your personal brand publicity very creatively :)

scalablenotions··on Limit Internet access until your child makes progress on educational sites
I hope nobody will try to use this as a substitute for supervision with regards to children accessing the internet. Not that many parents seem to think supervision is necessary for children accessing the internet, which never fails to floor me.
scalablenotions··on How do I get my son or daughter interested in computer programming?
I was interested in programming at a very young age, because of video games. I wanted to learn to make them. I was interested in video games first. What do they like to do on the computer? Can you find an opportunity for them to make their own version of whatever app they like to use?

I think I was quite naturally inclined to it, though, just like many other girls and boys. If you give your child opportunities to get involved, and they're not interested, it might be a sign that this is not their calling. Perhaps give them opportunities to get involved in something else, and see what naturally grabs them. This is more likely to help them maximize their talents.

scalablenotions··on How Google Could Collapse
This is fun reading, but it paints a picture of a "Google" much smaller than the real thing.
scalablenotions··on Seeing AI for iOS
As far as public use goes, it's always been considered legal / ethical to photograph people in public places. One does not know where the "information" in a photograph will end up, but since they are already technically in public view, it's something of a moot point.
scalablenotions··on How I Took an API Side Project to 250M Daily Requests
Why do you hear "Please consider" as "I demand/expect"?
scalablenotions··on Matrix Multiplication
Thank you! This is marvelous and really made me understand this process at a much simpler level. Please consider making more for other mathematical concepts :)
scalablenotions··on Process first, not data first – a response to “Data first, not code first”
A response to Evan Todd's excellent post: "Data first, not code first" (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10291688)
scalablenotions··on TPL and async/await Best Practices for the Busy Developer
This .Net async programming guide is a little bit different. It’s not a ‘how to’ or a deep dive. It’s more like a cheat-sheet for keeping out of trouble. Born at Trade Me Ltd, New Zealand.
