sawaruna··on Why do people hate vegans?
One of the dumbest comments I've seen on HN.
sawaruna··on Why do people hate vegans?
As long as you think there is a moral difference between eating and not eating animals, why would a religious vs. non-religious choice matter?
sawaruna··on U.S. Air Quality Was Improving. Now It’s Getting Worse
> Muller and co-author Karen Clay looked at the substances hanging over U.S. cities and found evidence for three potential sources of the pollution rebound: increased economic activity, virulent wildfires and a smaller number of EPA enforcement actions. It is important to note that the pair have not made any causal links between the three suspects and the increase of air pollution.

>The U.S. economy has picked up steam overall since 2017. More economic activity means more vehicles on the roads, driving more miles and emitting more pollutants. It also means more factories producing emissions along with consumer goods.

>Soot is another contributor to the pollution jump. The economists traced a rise in airborne carbon particles in part to wildfire activity in the West since 2016. (Wildfire activity didn’t play a role in the pollution decline through 2016, they said.)

>Finally, they also looked at pollution and enforcement trends. If polluters for some reason fail to follow Clean Air Act rules, PM2.5 can pick up. Clay and Muller found that EPA enforcement activity has trended down since at least 2009.

Haven't they had this since May?
sawaruna··on Google affiliate begins drone deliveries in Virginia town
Imagine the noise if this becomes common.

sawaruna··on Vandalized Xiaomi Store in Hong Kong

sawaruna··on What happens if your mind lives for ever on the internet?
I don't usually see the real self - virtual self interaction ideas talked about in stories about uploading our consciousness, so that stuff was pretty interesting. Likewise with the idea of a 'cloud world' that is in regular engagement with the real world.
sawaruna··on Ask HN: Done with macOS: to which Linux distro are you going?
Depends what you need to do I guess. For ‘normal’ usage I like Solus.
sawaruna··on Ask HN: Why is HN predominated by pro-ChineseCommunistParty people?
Reading comments of random topics (e.g. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21190265) most comments seem to not be siding with China. The HN community certainly isn't pro-CCP, but there are probably just random weibo drones browsing and downvoting anything they disagree with.

sawaruna··on Stack Overflow Inc. Fiasco: Timeline
What's the confusing part? It's often used in both plural and singular, for the latter mainly when you don't know the identity of the person. Not totally confusing to use it for an identity you do know IMO.
sawaruna··on Browser extension: nonstop streaming from Bandcamp feed/collection/wishlists
>For people who like listening to music on Bandcamp. The site forces users to press play on the next track after the current one finishes on these pages - they don't allow continuous streaming.

Is this only the case for single track pages? If I'm on an album page it will go to the next track without any input.

sawaruna··on In the Pancreas, Common Fungi May Drive Cancer
Does this imply anything regarding the consumption of yeast? Specifically nutritional yeast which many vegans tend to eat.
sawaruna··on Prominent scientists warn UN Secretary-General Guterres
>A group of 500 prominent scientists and professionals, led by the CLINTEL co-founder Guus Berkhout

Well let's see who this is.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guus_Berkhout

> Augustinus Johannes "Guus" Berkhout (born 1940) is a Dutch engineer who has worked for the oil and gas industry, and as a professor. Berkhout started his career working for Shell.

> In 2019, Berkhout founded the climate change denial organization Climate Intelligence Foundation (CLINTEL).

sawaruna··on Thousands of ships use 'cheat devices' to divert poisonous pollution into sea
Not sure if anyone is really being cheated in this scenario. The International Maritime Organization permits ships to use this, while ports are increasingly banning them from operating near their waters.

sawaruna··on Japan Airlines unveils tool to tackle horror of screaming infants – Child icon
This is funny and I guess useful but arguably a bit much. There are lots of other types of people I'd like to not sit beside during a 12 hour flight, should "deodorant wearing status" be added as well?
sawaruna··on NASA and ESA are going to slam a spacecraft into an asteroid to deflect it

sawaruna··on Upgraded reminders aren't compatible with earlier versions of iOS and macOS
This has happened in the past with photos and iCloud syncing or something. Probably doesn't affect a ton of people but it's presumably annoying to have to wait for the Catalina update for those with iOS 13.
sawaruna··on Joe Rogan Experience #1350 – Nick Bostrom
Painful last 45 minutes or so. Joe not being able to connect the probability point and "what if we're first and just haven't created a simulation yet" was frustrating to listen to, but I think Nick could have explained it a bit better as well.
sawaruna··on Richard Stallman and the Fall of the Clueless Nerd
Oh that's what the commenter was pointing out, my mistake.
sawaruna··on Richard Stallman and the Fall of the Clueless Nerd
Didn't read the article but where's the contradiction in your quote? Inability to understand and clueless are close enough.

e: My mistake, clarified below.

A total ban seems extreme. Like others said, if it's a problem for most people the sites won't just get voted enough to appear on thee main page.
sawaruna··on Google Warns LastPass Users Were Exposed to ‘Last Password’ Credential Leak
> Ferenc Kun, the security engineering manager for LastPass at LogMeIn, which owns LastPass, said in an online statement that this "limited set of circumstances on specific browser extensions" could potentially enable the attack scenario described."To exploit this bug, a series of actions would need to be taken by a LastPass user including filling a password with the LastPass icon, then visiting a compromised or malicious site and finally being tricked into clicking on the page several times," Kun said, "any potential exposure due to the bug was limited to specific browsers (Chrome and Opera.)"

> LastPass has already patched the vulnerability, and the fix was comprehensively verified with Project Zero. Indeed, the fix was rolled out on September 13, and Kun confirmed that "we have now resolved this bug; no user action is required and your LastPass browser extension will update automatically." As a precaution, the LastPass update was deployed to all web browsers and not just Chrome and Opera.

sawaruna··on Swedish scientist advocates eating humans to combat climate change
> The scientist acknowledged the "conservative" taboos that exist from ancient times against consuming human flesh and sees that as the main impediment to the spread of this idea. On the other hand, Söderlund argued our future food sources would likely be getting more and more scarce. So people would have to think outside the box to get their sustenance, considering pets, insects like grasshoppers and worms. That's also where humans come in. The scientist thinks that if people were introduced to human flesh little by little, there'd be enough takers.

Total stupidity.
