satokema_work··on Ask HN: I lost my ability to focus for hours on coding. How to regain?
The real trap is feeling like you need to be focused eight hours a day when it's not strictly needed.

There's an occasional crunch where I have to heads down get something done, but in that case there is actual motivation to be heads down and get things done.

I find a due date way more motivating than a mere thought of "I should be working...".

Overall, if I'm not already focused in, it's because it's something not as important as other things in my life.

Why does it need fixing per se? (Assume optional plurals)

If the parameter is incorrect, then the parameter should be adjusted correctly. Note that having an availability bias in the dataset is also incorrect, the parameter will reflect the incorrectness.

However, if the parameter is adjusted correctly: what is the problem other than people not wanting to be confronted with uncomfortable truths?

the ads aren't directly in the product, but that data ends up trying to provide you with "relevant" ads, just like the Android phone itself.

Are people honestly not creeped out when you get ads from other people's phones?

What do LGBT issues have anything to do with AI discussions? I ask purely for information.

It seems to be a core reluctance to address the mathematical aspects of reality. Sex differences are not binary, like different OO classes in a programming environment, but there are noticeable statistical poles, like correlating sex and height.

The problem it seems is that they can't understand that, yes, saying females are shorter than males is a valid heuristic, but it is not an absolute relation and should be integrated with actual observations and individual differences.

There's no shortage of street corners to protest on. Why are you mad that we pepper spray you when you try to protest in front of the bankers' offices?
satokema_work··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
This.

A big problem is oligarchic in nature: if you believe that ISPs should be classified as common carrier utilities that should not be permitted to limit or censor the data you receive within reason, then the oligarchic content hubs should similarly be common carriers of speech.

I don't have a rock solid argument on this, this is just an equivalence I'm asserting.

satokema_work··on U.S. workers hate ‘open’ office spaces
I already have a designated desk area against the wall, we're talking about adding a footprint for a couple of 5cm thick walls which is already my personal space anyway, the only difference is actually enclosing it instead of letting people wander into it because the office is already full.
satokema_work··on U.S. workers hate ‘open’ office spaces
No, the worst part is that you're standing in the kitchen when this happens.
satokema_work··on U.S. workers hate ‘open’ office spaces
This. Our desks unfortunately have to be so close as to face each other, and anytime the guy across from me is in the office I have to deal with distractions every time he wants to stretch, stand up, sit down, have a conversation with someone, etc. etc.

Now we actually have a flexible remote policy, but that's an entirely different can of worms, as I liked having a place to do deep work in that wasn't a coffee shop. My home is a bit too distracting sometimes.

satokema_work··on Ask HN: How to learn best practices when you have no one to teach you?
There's no substitute for direct experience.

You can rattle off quotes and documents all day, but this doesn't teach 1% as much as the direct pain of dealing with st on the job.

satokema_work··on Living Alone Can Be Deadly
Congratulations. If you have the slack to maximize these things, you're probably in the top tier of statistics of this study that get X'd out to make their point.

This leads me to this: it's interesting to think about which way the correlation goes - are these early deaths caused by living alone, or is it a symptom of other things wrong in their life that lead to a lack of girlfriends and random people and family in their life?
