sarnowski··on FTP Must Die
Maybe you missed the OpenSSH 4.9 release? http://www.openssh.com/txt/release-4.9

Since then, it is easy to setup a chroot'ed account which easily acts like an ftp server. Have a look at ChrootDirectory and the internal-sftp subsystem.

sarnowski··on New slow-motion DoS attack: just a few PCs, little fear of detection
This remembers me of the really cool spamd application from OpenBSD just the other way around: "When a sending host talks to spamd, the reply will be stuttered. That is, the response will be sent back a character at a time, slowly."

sarnowski··on John Carmack on the importance of Static Code Analysis
We enforce the usage of IDEA. In addition IDEA gives fine-grained control over the analysis configuration. Every file has to be green (no warning) before commit. TeamCity can then afterwards check those inspections again in the CI process.

ctrl+d was an amazing improvement when my boss showed it to me years ago. Now I discover that a lot of people don't know it.
sarnowski··on Planet - Python realtime framework, the framework behind battlefields battlelog
Indeed, I wonder if they have a deal with Jetbrains for that.
sarnowski··on Modern Web Applications are Here
Even on my BF3 gaming PC, the UI feels slugish and lags on most clicks. In addition, it feels like the heavy-js sites are much more error prone than simple, hard-to-fail get+get+get sites. Battlelog is often not in sync with the real state of the server and your computer. Only page reloads can help in those situations.
sarnowski··on Android Orphans: Visualizing a Sad History of Support
I am using a branded T-Mobile HTC phone and I cannot agree more about unwanted crapware. I have a "Top Ten Apps" app on my phone which is preinstalled by T-Mobile, is not removable und runs permanently as a background process with 14mb ram (and I never started it) -.- I don't need to mention all those facebook, twitter and other "social" stuff where I don't even have accounts for.
sarnowski··on Signs that you are a bad programmer
Fully agree and I want to add, that it is also a requirement for writing good, simple, small unit tests. Clean code means, a function should only do one thing and that's the thing you can test.
sarnowski··on EVE Online Investment Scam Revealed
On german Ebay, you get 1,000mio isk for 25€ so it sums up to 25,000€ which is according to google something like 34,000 US$. but yes, it is not legal.

sarnowski··on Germany vs. Facebook: Like Button Declared Illegal, Sites Threatened With Fine
I guess if you use a gmail account, a g+ account or some other google account all the tracking stuff can be connected to you.
sarnowski··on Germany vs. Facebook: Like Button Declared Illegal, Sites Threatened With Fine
As already mentioned, Google Analytics also had to reduce the data send to US servers. It is (more or less) forbidden to generally log IP addresses now (the big web hosters already anonymize their log files - the default apache logfile format is somehow illegal in Germany now).

I am german myself and fully agree with the privacy enforcing people in Germany and EU. Everytime you visit a website where someone added a Like button a whole set of tracking data will be submitted to US servers without a chance for me to forbid this. (Never saw a message "Is it ok for you that I load the Facebook Like button where your data will be transmitted to Facebook?") And after Facebook has a nearly complete profile over my web activities (every 2nd page already has a Like button) practically the US government also has all those data (edit: for fairness: everyone who pays for the data too)

sarnowski··on Oh, Adobe... read the copy, then view the source.
There are worse things than the technical ones if you write bad HTML. Just two keywords: - accessibility / barrier-free - search engine optimization
