sarlalian··on Apple Is Selling iPad Repair Parts for Astronomical Prices
Much of it's going to boil down to personal preferences obviously, however it's very reasonable to argue that the trackpads on Apple laptops are the best in the industry. Generally Apple laptops have great speakers and sound, high quality microphones, with good noise cancelling. The laptop shell is bendy enough to not be brittle, but stiff enough to work even in a lap. Battery life is second to none, keyboard quality is good enough (often better than most PC laptops). Great screen quality, with glossy and matte options.

Their software ecosystem is a more mixed bag, great integration between devices and services, but definitely a walled garden (not 100% a bad thing), and the walls are getting higher (definitely bad).

Apple of today is very consumer and developer hostile, to the point of burning any and all goodwill that they have.

sarlalian··on ZUSE: IRC terminal client
1. Written in Go, not C so I might be able to contribute. 2. Not crazy complex to configure (lost my old weechat config, and I'm not going through all that effort again). 3. Can be embedded into other go applications (see above where it was originally written to be embedded into a music TUI).

Will this project end up as a small weekend project with only a few users? Possibly, but that isn't a reason not to create something and share what it with people.

There's a ton a great software that started to solve a problem that the developer had, that eventually hit pretty mainstream usage.

sarlalian··on DJI couldn't confirm or deny it disguised this drone to evade a US ban
There are plenty of open designs where you can buy parts off the shelf and build your own drone. Nothing has the software that DJI produces to go on top of the drone. Not specifically a good or bad thing, learning to fly on your own has a lot of value. But you will have more crashes.
sarlalian··on I Used Arch, BTW: macOS, Day 1
That’s what Mitchell Hashimoto does.
sarlalian··on I Used Arch, BTW: macOS, Day 1
No, however it makes driver development easier and all the work to date is in rust, so changing languages would be exceedingly painful.
sarlalian··on Measuring the impact of AI on experienced open-source developer productivity
There are plenty of examples of other tech where "you're just not using it right" is perfectly acceptable and many people find that it provides a high level of value. Rust and Vim being two that come immediately to mind. Both have sharp edges and steep learning curves, yet for some population are wildly popular, yet not right for everyone.

It's also possible for the user to be not using it right and that not be a value judgement on the user. We all suck at using new tools, that's part of learning.

sarlalian··on Study finds AI tools made open source software developers 19 percent slower
This has already been discussed heavily in this thread:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44522772

Link to the full paper: https://metr.org/Early_2025_AI_Experienced_OS_Devs_Study.pdf

Overall the study is a very small sample size (16), with mixed AI tooling and mixed AI experience. It's an interesting data point, but honestly not an extensive enough study to make any causal determination. It's certainly plagued by much of the discourse around AI being highly polarized, as well as AI being such a broad category as to have little meaning overall.

Quoting from the above thread:

> My intuition here is that this study mainly demonstrated that the learning curve on AI-assisted development is high enough that asking developers to bake it into their existing workflows reduces their performance while they climb that learning curve.

The above quote, very much matches my personal experience. The first month or two was very hit or miss, and plagued with frustration. As I got better using the tools, and figured out new workflows, and settled on better tools, it's become a much better experience for me. Specifically, asking ChatGPT or Claude to generate a function for me sucked, editor tab completion with a good model was better, but still occasionally frustrating, chat in cursor was better than that, and claude code as an agent has been fantastic. But the journey was long and required a lot of reading, video watching, and listening to podcasts about how people who are successfully using AI coding tools work.

Currently I feel like I'm about 2x as productive (note: I'm not a particularly quick developer, so YMMV).

sarlalian··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
As is usually the case, did the car burning happen before or after it was declared a riot, and the law enforcement agencies involved started using force? Did the riot start and then the police started using CS gas, rubber bullets, etc, or did the police use force and protesters with little recourse started damaging property out of anger and frustration because they can’t use force back against law enforcement?
sarlalian··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
Another really good read about containers, jails and zones.

sarlalian··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
Unless you need to have a working video or audio config as well.
sarlalian··on How the US defense secretary circumvents official DoD communications equipment
Well apparently at this point it’s his phone, his wife’s phone, his lawyer’s phone, maybe anyone in the inner circle of people he cares about.
sarlalian··on Oxide’s compensation model: how is it going?
Certain production studios (Commercial / Feature Entertainment) may have air-gapped datacenters. I'd expect anyone making an Apple commercial is doing that on air-gapped infrastructure.

Defense contractors, Pharma companies, basically anyone who has IP that they want to tightly control access to.

sarlalian··on FBI arrests judge accused of helping man evade immigration authorities
She probably didn't think it was appropriate for ICE to arrest Ruiz at the courthouse. If going to court for a case against you becomes a good way to get deported, guess what people aren't going to do. We don't have the resources to keep everyone who has a case against them in jail, so we release people on the promise that they will show up for court. If it's dangerous to their freedom and living status to show up to court, they won't.
sarlalian··on FBI arrests judge accused of helping man evade immigration authorities
That is a very simple explanation to an obviously more complex issue.
sarlalian··on FBI arrests judge accused of helping man evade immigration authorities
I'll correct my previous statement, it does appear in the legal brief about the judge being arrested that he was here illegally.

https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.wied.11...

sarlalian··on FBI arrests judge accused of helping man evade immigration authorities
There is nothing in any of the articles indicating he was here illegally. He's referred to in all the articles I've read as an immigrant. Not as illegal or undocumented.

It's also reasonable to point out that removing someones legal immigration status, due to being "charged" with a crime, is a seriously slippery slope.

sarlalian··on Interviewing a software engineer who prepared with AI
You can occasionally prompt the AI resume review systems using the white text as well.
sarlalian··on NaNoWriMo to close after 20 years
I’m just going to borrow an excellent quote that applies here.

“If you couldn’t be bothered to write it, why should I bother to read it?”

sarlalian··on Using a graphics tablet as a programming tool (2018)
You don't ever write out diagrams for your software development? Or diagram workflows?
sarlalian··on Music labels will regret coming for the Internet Archive, sound historian says
Well, the typical setup with OneDrive in MS365, is that the overworked manager get’s an email when an employee account is deactivated. The manager has 90 days to search through their OneDrive and copy anything out that they think is needed, possibly to the central SharePoint or to their own OneDrive. I’m sure there are similar policies and procedures in place for enterprise dropbox, box.net, and Google Drive. So typically employee leaves and the manager never gets around to copying data out, 6-9 months later they need something that employee had, and yell at IT to recover it. IT laughs and laughs and then cries.
sarlalian··on Caddy – The Ultimate Server with Automatic HTTPS
I use a combination of mkcert and localdev.me … mkcert to generate a CA and install certs, then localdev.me redirects any subdomain to localhost.
sarlalian··on Ask HN: Is wind power financially viable without subsidies?
Is that still true if the costs of oil/gas stop being socialized? Basically the people pay for oil cleanups, for air polution, etc, the cost is still there it's just not currently born by the oil companies. Also, how do the costs stack up if you drop all oil subsidies?
sarlalian··on Americans React to UnitedHealthcare CEO's Murder: 'My Empathy Is Out of Network'
The failures of our legal system to hold the wealthy in general and CEO’s in particular accountable for their decisions is why he was gunned down instead of being brought to justice via the legal system.

If he killed as many people with a gun or a knife as he has with his decisions as a CEO, he would likely be the most prolific serial killer (though maybe not since there wasn’t a cooling off period).

I like many people am not cheering his death, but I’m also not ever going to mourn the death of an objectively terrible person.

sarlalian··on Google’s TOS doesn’t eliminate a user’s Fourth Amendment rights, judge rules [pdf]
That’s called luck.

Personally I’m a cis white male, who’s been a mostly law abiding citizen, and I’ve had dozens of poor interactions with police throughout my life. Additionally I have a probably unusual number of family and friends who work in law enforcement. The stories I’ve heard about co-workers from them are absolutely terrifying. My father’s (retired police officer) advice when I became a teenager was “only call the police when what is about to happen is worse than going to jail.”

I deeply respect the difficulty of the profession and don’t believe that all or even most police are bad people, but there are way too many who have no business being in that profession.

sarlalian··on Arm is canceling Qualcomm's chip design license
The bigger question is how much of their existing cores utilize Arm IP… and how sure are they that they would find all of it?
sarlalian··on Vimium – The Hacker's Browser
For gaining expertise in vim, I generally point people at https://danielmiessler.com/p/vim/ which will teach you how to think about vim as a text manipulation language rather than just as an editor.
sarlalian··on Ask HN: Why is there not more concern about the physical security of Cloudflare?
They have some docs on the security of their server hardware, which is one of the ways they can assure that their systems haven't been tampered with by local staff.

sarlalian··on What's New in Ruby on Rails 8
Solid Snake really should end up in the python world.
sarlalian··on What are the best options for Amazon SDEs thinking about leaving over RTO policy
My understanding of URA, is that it's when a manager is able to manage a person into leaving the job that they can't justify firing, but really don't want on the team. So then the person leaves, and is flagged as we didn't want to keep them anyway.
sarlalian··on Apple Watch Series 10
While I get the concerns about battery life, like most things in tech it's about weighing different tradeoffs against each other. Battery life, ecosystem, quality of sensors, app availability, resale value, etc.

I already have daily habits around charging, so that doesn't bother me, and if I'm traveling I can either bring a charger or put the watch in low power mode where it lasts a surprisingly long time.

My Apple watch purchase was basically for one feature. Fall detection, and automatic 911 calling. I bought the watch when I had a close call with a car while riding my bike to work, and wanted to make sure in case of an accident, I'd at least probably die in the ambulance and not on the side of the road :)
