santoshalper··on ICE Deports 3 U.S. Citizen Children Held Incommunicado Prior to the Deportation
I think a couple of things are important to remember in a time like this:

1. This behavior, whether legal or not, is profoundly inhumane.

2. No law, statute, or rule requires us to treat anyone inhumanely. The people behaving this way are doing it because they want to. These are not people you want to have access to any power.

santoshalper··on Wikipedia’s nonprofit status questioned by D.C. U.S. attorney
I think your view of gamergate is absolutely fucking delusional. I watched it all go down in real time like many of us did. Saying Gamergate was about ethics in games journalism is roughly as accurate as saying the US Civil War was about "states rights". In that it is kinda sorta technically true if you ignore 99% of what was actually happening.

But there is a survivorship bias because doing what Wikipedia does is almost impossible.

That is a really dumb theory, and I'm pretty sure you just made it up.

Almost everything the government makes IS public domain, including the software.

santoshalper··on TikTok Is Harming Children at an Industrial Scale
I think your comment, while not especially constructively formed, is a good warning about alarm-ism. However, I think you should at least consider a few things:

1. The concerns about D&D were quite different. Most parents admired the creativity involved in role-playing. The concerns came from a relatively small subset of parents who were concerned about the morality of the subject matter (monsters, demons etc.). For the record, I thought at the time that these concerns were pretty silly and had little merit, and still do.

2. Just because there have been moral/social panics in the past, doesn't mean the concerns about social media today are invalid. Sometimes worries are wrong, sometimes they are right. Having been wrong before does not make it rational to never be concerned again.

3. It is entirely possible that concerns about high-volume TV watching were correct. Just because my generation (X) survived the TV era does not mean we came out of it unscathed. Much of the ignorance and obnoxiousness of our current age may very well be caused by today's middle aged people growing up watching television. (Or maybe it was the lead paint our parents grew up with?)

santoshalper··on Googler... ex-Googler
Dude, Marissa Mayer hasn't been at Google for well over a decade. Weird callout.
santoshalper··on The PS3 Licked the Many Cookie
Where a console rates on the all-time sales leader board is pretty irrelevant, since the industry has grown so much in absolute terms. As when looking at movie box office revenue, you need to look at more than one number if you want to judge the real performance of a console in the market.

Here is a good example: The PS3 sold only slightly more than half as many units as its predecessor, the PS2, did. Most businesses would, in fact, consider it a failure if their 3rd generation product sold much more poorly than the second generation. Sony's rapid move away from the PS3/Cell architecture gives you a pretty good reason to believe they considered it a failure too.

santoshalper··on Tailscale has raised $160M
You're right that we don't know all the terms, but $160M raised is not small and it is very reasonable to worry about what level of control will be given up long term because of it.
santoshalper··on Washington Post editor resigns after accusing CEO of killing column
Regardless of your political stance, the owner of a newspaper dictating that they will be "writing every day in support and defense” of “personal liberties and free markets." means they are no longer journalism and are simply propaganda.
santoshalper··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Ah... A student of the clown school of negotiating where bluster, threats, and tantrums take the place of compromise.

Here's the real deal: Trump is a Russian asset, and it is already a foregone conclusion that Ukraine is getting fucked. This is just theatre so he can pin the whole thing on Zelensky.

santoshalper··on Solitaire
Don't worry, Windows is still far, far more ubiquitous. The bigger reason people don't play solitaire as much as they used to is that it is no longer the only game installed on their PC.

So many people in the 90s learned solitaire playing it on a work from a lack of other options on their work PC. Now with the so many games on the web and your smartphone, you might not even try it.

People give Microsoft a lot of shit, but including bundled games on what was at the time primarily a business OS was bold, controversial, and brilliant.

What a thoughtful post. I think there is a narrative that localthunk is a "shitty programmer" (which he might very well be), but that by extension, it also means that he just got lucky and bumblefucked his way into massive success - almost as though he didn't know any better.

A post like this dispels that narrative - he clearly put a ton of thought into the design of that game and was incredibly intentional about where he wanted it to go.

santoshalper··on Page is under construction: A love letter to the personal website
People who host their own websites are becoming like vegans in that they won't STFU about it. Having your own website is not a substitute for having a personality.
santoshalper··on Y Combinator Supports AI Startup Dehumanizing Factory Workers
If you don't like evil, you should do something not evil. But also, you shouldn't tell evil people that you don't like what they're doing, because that might hurt their feelings.
santoshalper··on Tariffs result in 10% laptop price hike in U.S. says Acer CEO
I don't think it does invalidate the argument. As a cohort, wealthy people spend a much lower percentage of their total wealth than middle or lower class people do. Any spending-based tax (sales tax, tariffs) will be much better for wealthy people than the equivalent income or wealth based tax.

santoshalper··on Why I'm leaving Elm (2020)
If you don't want to be a steward of an open technology, why on earth would you become an open-source maintainer?
santoshalper··on Why I'm leaving Elm (2020)
Dead means different things to different people, but there is no way in hell I'd start a new project using a niche language that hasn't been updated in almost a year.
santoshalper··on Why I'm leaving Elm (2020)
Your defense of the Elm leadership team is far more vague than the article criticizing it. He is very specific about limitations of the platform and the behavior of the leaders. You, on the other hand, are very hand-wavey in their defense "sometimes you just have to say no and piss people off". Do you believe these decisions were good ones? Do you believe they were done the right way?
santoshalper··on Dust from Car Brakes More Harmful Than Exhaust, Study Finds
Yeah, but you know it's not going to the get the coverage it deserves, since it's not a problem in the US, where we use tires instead.
santoshalper··on Zed now predicts your next edit with Zeta, our new open model
Totally different. You aren't adjusting your development workflow based on a soft drink. If it weren't a rug-pull, why wouldn't they charge for it immediately, or at least tell us the price now?

They are specifically hoping you'll become dependent on it and then feel compelled to pay. This shit works because people like you believe it doesn't.

santoshalper··on Zed now predicts your next edit with Zeta, our new open model
They're just telling you it's not going to be $0.00. It could be $5/year, $20/mo or anything else. It's the gentleman's rug-pull.
santoshalper··on Detroit’s revival takes shape after decades of decay
Pretty much. At some point there is nowhere to go but up. Still, it's nice to see.
santoshalper··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
Man, that shit is so old. Even if you're right, which I don't think you are, you are adding nothing to the conversation but cynicism.
santoshalper··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
Disclosure - I immensely dislike Trump and think Ross Ublricht deserved to be convicted.

That said - There is no evidence that anyone was ever killed, there is pretty thin evidence that he actually ever intended to hire any hitmen (though he may have defrauded people who thought they were hiring hitmen), and a life sentence for non-violent drug trafficking seems draconian. I certainly don't think this should have been one of Trump's priorities (I'm guessing it came through Vance, Musk, or someone else in the crypto community), but I don't have a big problem with it.
