santoshalper··on Steve wants us to make the Macintosh boot faster
Bullshitting, inspiring, and marketing are just three different words for the same thing.
santoshalper··on Steve wants us to make the Macintosh boot faster
It also didn't always work. At no point did the MacBook boot nearly as instantly as an iPad. That said, Jobs' obsession with UX was a powerful driving force and your point stands.
santoshalper··on Steve wants us to make the Macintosh boot faster
Enjoy your tacky, Vista-esque, liquid glass.
santoshalper··on Will West Coast Jazz Get Some Respect?
Using "easy listening" as a pejorative has always baffled me. Why does music need to be difficult?
santoshalper··on Datacenters in space aren't going to work
The facts you quoted just made me even more convinced that space-based datacenters will not be cost effective any time soon. If an entire generation of satellites costing many billions of dollars can't power more GPUs than a single terrestrial datacenter, how could it possibly be cost effective?
santoshalper··on The Lions Operating System
It's developed by UNSW Sydney, whose mascot is a Lion. (Specifically, "Clancy the Lion"), so I am guessing it's probably that.
santoshalper··on Steam Machine
Yeah, this is clearly a person going through a mental health crisis. Sorry for them.
santoshalper··on Why I code as a CTO
Dude is a staff engineer, not a CTO.
santoshalper··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
No. Awful people are tearing American apart. Not the moral courage to condemn them.
santoshalper··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
I think mass murder is one area where we can safely feel moral outrage. It might not work, but it probably has a better chance of influencing the outcome than shrugging and saying "well, that's just how it is".
santoshalper··on I deleted my entire social media presence before visiting the US – I'm a citizen
Yeah, probably, but you don't have to be a martyr for the cause if it means not being able to go home.
santoshalper··on I deleted my entire social media presence before visiting the US – I'm a citizen
Since the election, we have social and institutional norms be torn down or routed around time and time again. While I agree that I have not seen this specific situation yet, I think you'd be a fool to blithely assume it will not happen soon. It is possible, it is (by some people in power) highly desirable, and those people have made it clear that legality is irrelevant to them.

These are not normal times, and your cynicism is not serving you well here.

EDIT: I don't believe that the parent post should have been flagged. While I disagree with them, I believe they posted productively and in good faith.

santoshalper··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
Well, they do have $330M in revenue and the product is all over the place, so I'm not sure your hypothesis is correct. Many people simply don't share your view "if you're going to eat vegetarian, eat vegetarian". I think the biggest problem is that they have not been able to get cost under control.
santoshalper··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
I think the idea was that Beyond Meat would be a "transitional" product that would provide an ever growing vegetarian/vegan population an option that was familiar to them. For example, if you do not care about celebrating vegetables, and just want to end animal cruelty, but you miss the taste of meat, then a beyond burger was supposed to be for you.

The biggest problem they have is the exhorbinant prices, which relegate it to niche status.

santoshalper··on We do not break userspace (2012)
I'm really impressed by how Mauro handles himself in the face of a huge man-baby temper tantrum.
santoshalper··on Finding a former Australian prime minister’s passport number on Instagram (2020)
Really interesting, but the writing was so bad I had to bail out halfway through.
santoshalper··on Long Covid destroys teenage lungs in ways doctors never saw
Yeah, I get that pop-sci writers don't want to scare off their audiences with hard science, but at least a callout with a couple of cited sources would help add a lot of credibility.
santoshalper··on Long Covid destroys teenage lungs in ways doctors never saw
I had slightly below average respiratory health due to childhood asthma, but after having COVID, it has been much worse. It sucks to think I missed the vaccine by only a few weeks - I might have still gotten COVID but the symptoms would have been milder. Now, I am likely to lose several high-quality years off the back end of my life.
santoshalper··on The Polymarket users betting on when Jesus will return
Whenever people say things like this "the universe is too weird not to have been created", I always ask "Weird compared to what? To other realities you have witnessed?"

The safest assumption to make, if you absolutely have to make an assumption at all, is that this reality is pretty average. With no knowledge whatsoever, it's certainly safer than betting it is somehow exotic.

santoshalper··on Chomsky on what ChatGPT is good for (2023)
What's dangerous about him?
santoshalper··on Chomsky on what ChatGPT is good for (2023)
I see this as much more of a hackers vs. corporations ideological split. Which imperfectly maps to leftism vs conservatism.

The perception on the left is that once again, corporations are foisting products on us that nobody wants, with no concern for safety, privacy, or respect for creators.

For better or worse, the age of garage-tech is mostly dead and Tech has become synonymous with corporatism. This is especially true with GenAI, where the resources to construct a frontier model (or anything remotely close to it) are far outside what a hacker can afford.

santoshalper··on Chomsky on what ChatGPT is good for (2023)
Or an ideological alignment of values. Generative AI is strongly associated with large corporations that are untrusted (to put it generously) by those on the left.

An equivalent observation might be that the only people who seem really, really excited about current AI products are grifters who want to make money selling it. Which looks a lot like Blockchain to many.

santoshalper··on Grok answers unrelated queries with long paragraphs about "white genocide"
Hacker News is primarily read by young, affluent, intelligent men. In the old days, people like us would often fall hard for Ayn Rand's bullshit (I know I did!), now they fall for this new bullshit.

Really, it's the same thing though - it feels good to have someone tell you that you are exceptional and that your biggest problem is that someone (women, minorities, The Man, bureaucrats) is holding you back from becoming the next Steve Jobs or Frank Lloyd Wright.

You gotta understand that most people are not principled and operate solely on a vibes-based ethical framework: "If it feels good, it's probably right."

santoshalper··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting Statement Regarding Executive Order
You should disabuse yourself of the notion that concepts like personal discipline, contentiousness, and integrity are somehow "conservative" values. They are not in either sense of the word conservative.

Certainly from a political standpoint, republicans (or their equivalent in other nations) have often used these concepts against women, minorities, and the mentally ill as a means of shirking their obligation to help their fellow human. In my observation, they never make much of an attempt to live up to them in their own lives. (e.g. YOU are a welfare queen, but I am an entrepreneur who needed to take a government bailout).

On the other hand, if "conservative" means "old-fashioned" to you, then there is also no reason to believe that the people before us were morally superior to us today. My reading of history leads me to believe quite the opposite.

santoshalper··on I use zip bombs to protect my server
Nah, back then we paid for bandwidth by the kb.
santoshalper··on Still standing
As a long time ACLU financial supporter, I could not disagree more. 4chan is not and never was a bastion of free speech. Comparing 4chan to the ACLU is like comparing a toddler smearing shit on a wall to art. To practice free speech requires an intent to express a point of view. 4chan had to point of view and was just a shithole.
santoshalper··on Still standing
Imaging dedicating hundreds or thousands of unpaid hours of your life to protect and preserve what amounts to a truck stop toilet. What a total fucking waste.

They should, in fact, give up and use the time for literally anything else.

santoshalper··on I tried Windows gaming on a Mac
If gaming is important to you, build a good desktop gaming PC. If you enjoy games casually and don't want the money/hassle of a gaming desktop, get a Playstation, Switch, Steam Deck, or buy a lower-end gaming laptop.

If you enjoy tinkering, setting up Linux or a Mac for gaming can be a fun project, but it's not a good use of your time if your goal is to play games well. You'll jump through a lot of hoops and maybe get something 70% as good.

santoshalper··on I tried Windows gaming on a Mac
Per year.
santoshalper··on I tried Windows gaming on a Mac
Gotta love the irrational exuberance of Mac users.
