sangnoir··on The NBA Apple Vision Pro app now has a 3D tabletop view
TV OEMs tried to make 3D home entertainment a thing over a decade ago, and it was a failure. Has the environment changed enough to make a difference? I have my doubts, even though the average Internet bandwidth has gone up, at least 3D TV was nominally a shared social activity.

> I assume property values will evaporate along with the stock markets if this train keeps on rolling.

The US government can prop up the stock market for a very long time. Anyone who purchased Puts early on during COVID times found themselves on the opposite side of a suddenly generous Fed that poured hitherto unseen amounts of liquidity directly into the markets. The chickens only came to roost in the next administration, but ai suspect they could have kept at it for 10+ years and still kept inflation under 12-15%

You've never played Plague, Inc. and it shows.

One of the better strategies in that game was to spend all you points on mutations that improve contagiousness and minimizing "scary symptoms" (like haemorrhaging from the eyes) early on, and then ramping those up later on so you kill everyone before scientists can complete their research into a cure. Research only started when your plague became disruptive.

I'm not going to be harangued for being an omnivore who's against factory-farmed chickens. You can lump me with the rest of the meat-eaters if it makes your feel better, but I'll have you know I don't purchase or use their services from those I find objectionable. I make no apologies for having a different moral scale, or liking chicken as a protein source.

1. It's not anecdotal. There's a very long papertrail if you wish to seek it.

2. I also shared my opinion about Larry Ellison in a different HN thread, and he's done nothing to me except make Java deader to me than it already was.

Do you speak negatively only about those who've personally affronted you?

The husk of the SEC with its brains scooped out is a useful tool to sic upon one's competitors or ideological enemies. I wouldn't be surprised by an SEC investigation into OpenAI in the next few years.

> And that’s arguably a core job of any elected government. It’s not to promote external commerce or industry.

Is the "free trade" mask completely off now? Good.

> But an insanely ruthless businessman

Ruthless but ineffective: he'll stiff contractors and suppliers, but still failed to keep a Casino solvent when the house is supposed to always win. He also started a tariff war in his first term that ended up with him subsidizing farmers.

sangnoir··on A Year of Telepathy
Decision-making must be easy when you see the world in black and white. From where I stand, not all killings are equal.
sangnoir··on Larry Ellison wants to put all America's data in AI, including DNA
> Ellison no doubt genuinely thinks that such an effort is his highest calling, the best contribution he can possibly make to humanity's well-being

It's likely much simpler: Larry thinks the solution to (his) immortality - or longevity at the very least - may be contained in Americans' collective DNA, and AI may be able to tease the answers out.

> why can't we have less weirdos that make money

When they do, you don't hear from them/about them as much! Chuck Feeney gave away his billions, but he's hardly ever mentioned.

There's something about Rust that draws Zealots (or draws out zealotry in people). It's not at Haskell's level, but there are several culty elements for the fanatics: secret knowledge, being 'chosen' or set aside from the ignorant plebians, and an unshakable belief in a form of rapture when the language will inevitably win when everyone realizes the superiority of monads/memory safety.
sangnoir··on A Year of Telepathy
> Being concerned about animal testing seems pretty silly coming from people who likely eat pigs

This is reductive and lacking any form of nuance. If I eat chicken, should I automatically be okay with heavily industrialized chicken farms, or even setting chickens alight for entertainment? Just because one evolved to be an omnivore doesn't mean one is okay with all forms of killing animals.

The current doctrine is those - and any other - rules don't apply to the president in his official capacity. SCOTUS declared that it's legal when the president does it.

Wikipedia won't inform me about the social media and email dynamics at a car manufacturer. Just the email response alone was entertaining and informative: self-aware humor-encrusted legalese that is very human. I can appreciate it for what it is: great PR work from a professional. Wikipedia is pretty humorless, it probably wouldn't even acknowledge the subtext.

sangnoir··on Firing programmers for AI is a mistake
> The ones who didn’t take FAANG jobs but instead went deep into systems programming, AI interpretability, or high-performance computing

I appreciate a good FAANG hatefest, but what the gosh-darn heck is this? Does the author seriously think all FAANG engineers only transform and sling gRPC all day? Or they they blindly stumbled into being hyperscalers?

The author should randomly pick a mailing list on any if those topics (systems programming, AI interpretability, HPC) and count the number of emails from FAANG domains

British kettles draw so much power, the electric utility had to consider the additional power draw on the grid from synchronized tea-making during the commercial breaks of a popular soap opera, back when broadcast TV was king.

> He always had it? Money give influence naturally.

Not as much as he has now: he was famously frustrated by the California state government's Covid lockdown mandates, and was pretty powerless against them. That frustration is probably what led him to buy influence in the Trump campaign, and later administration. Money can take you so far, political power will take you further for imposing your will on others.

The "Shock-and-awe"/blitzkrieg strategy is another force-multiplier. By moving much faster than the bureaucracy and legal system can respond, the question on whether he has the power or authority to do the things he's doing may become moot.

> I don't see a route where I could reasonably have much more than say 10 million 10 years from now.

You have to ask yourself this- how much is enough, and how hard are you willing to work/risk for it? On the low end, how much is the minimum, and what pros would make that acceptable, quality of life, risk, anxiety levels, etc.

Your way forward will be much clearer when you know what your parameters are, even though life may happen between now and the end date of your plans.
