sangeeth96··on Wikenigma – an Encyclopedia of Unknowns
TIL there is a name for this.

> In 2002, during a press briefing about the Iraq War, Donald Rumsfeld famously divided information into four categories: known knowns, known unknowns, unknown knowns, and unknown unknowns. These distinctions became the basis for the Rumsfeld Matrix, a decision-making framework that maps and evaluates the various degrees of certainty and uncertainty.

sangeeth96··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
That's how I feel as feel. It's costly given the things non-devs types won't need and it's not fleshed out enough to attract those types of folks to make the switch. GitHub is probably missing the boat tbh. Even the marketing page (https://github.com/features/issues) is targeted at developers.
sangeeth96··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
That's really nice to hear. I'm glad things worked out for your org.

GitHub marketing folks probably should reach out to you :)

sangeeth96··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
Oh my! That doesn't sound like a good place to be in. I hope y'all figure something out to get them onboard or migrate out.
sangeeth96··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
Interesting. Are you an all-dev org or did you also onboard non-devs into GH Projects?

> the GH experience just encourages writing, whereas the Jira experience seems hostile to it.

Huh, that's interesting to hear. I didn't personally find it harder to add detailed descriptions in Jira back when I used it couple of years back. Wonder if there's anything specific about the experience you can describe that makes you feel GH projects is more friendly for writing.

sangeeth96··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
Oh cool! I have some questions:

1. Does the data org work in isolation from other orgs? I'm guessing not.

2. Does the data org consist of non-engineers? If yes, are they also onboarded into GitHub with their own GH accounts?

3. If (1) is no, what tool is used to track cross-org work? Does the company also use Jira or some other tool and is GH projects integrated with them or something? I'm really curious about this workflow if it is relevant to how you folks work.

sangeeth96··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
I really feel like GH needs to spin out Projects into a more dedicated, funded team while still maintaining a close sync in order for it to become more viable/interesting. Besides allowing it to grow faster and better, that should also allow for non-dev seat pricing.
sangeeth96··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
Absolutely. They definitely can't expect to sell this to teams/orgs with non-devs without introducing separate pricing for folks who just want to read/write to projects but maybe read-only for some aspects of a repo.
sangeeth96··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
I'm curious if there are folks here who work at for-profit orgs who use GitHub projects as their sole issue tracker for the entire org. How do you do it and what are the common pain points? Do you couple it with other issue trackers/project management tools like Jira? If so—why?

I still feel GH Projects is solely aimed at OSS or dev-centric or dev-only orgs and doesn't cater to teams with non-devs, which is how I think most orgs function. I'm not sure if it'll ever try to be something more than that but I really wish it did.

sangeeth96··on Nvidia bets on robotics to drive future growth
I’m not sure if you’re generalizing to a specific region in your assessment but regardless, I doubt this is anywhere close to a solved problem given the crashes/incidents (so far) still associated with the tech and the dependencies IIRC on street signs and other markers.

re: region, I’d like to see it take on more challenging conditions, like in India for example where things are chaotic even for human drivers. I doubt that it’ll survive over here.

sangeeth96··on Happy New Year 2025
Happy new year to all the HN members! Thankful for this site's existence and for all the knowledge and wisdom I gained over the years just by being here almost every single day.

sangeeth96··on An invisible desktop application that will help you pass technical interviews
Someone beat my lazy ass to it XD

Had something in the works when I first got to know about multimodal GPT and electron made it super simple to prototype something. Refined it a bit to even do the invisible window thing after feedback from my peers. Didn’t have the ahem courage to do it.

Also recently noticed there are actual companies around this space who are marketing this off as “interview assistance”. Two of them I’m aware of:

1. https://www.senseicopilot.com/

2. https://www.finalroundai.com/

——

I’m sure the knee-jerk reaction from the tech industry to these tools would be:

1. Return to in-person interviews

2. Force install spyware/vanguard like crap to scan your whole personal computer before doing the interview

If you are a tech leader/senior engineer with influence on these matters, I *HOPE*, that this is not the path you take. It’s high time FAANG and others stop gatekeeping with these useless rounds that are equivalent to forcing people to hand-solve complex math equations instead of using calculators. I also partly blame the YT influencers who keep peddling this BS but they will stop if the companies themselves take a stance.

You can rather use the same 1 hour slots to have a conversation, pair program on a realistic problem required for the role you’re hiring for where you and the interviewee can both benefit from the knowledge transfer. I’ve tried this in many of the interviews I’ve conducted and always went away learning something from an excellent candidate or a candidate who didn’t meet the expectations, going out knowing where they fall short.

sangeeth96··on Never fail a technical interview again
The in-person whiteboard interviews isn’t always a thing for all SDE rounds, but def there for SDE-2 and above I guess. Still, it’s just a matter of time before this is also solved.
sangeeth96··on The correct amount of ads is zero
Paid print media != digital/web.

bit of a stretch.

sangeeth96··on Show HN: SQLite Plugin for Jekyll
Although I don’t use Jekyll, loved this idea. I think using SQLite as the main data source would be a nice way to preserve content and play around with different static generators if they all had a plugin like this.

Also TIL about the baked data pattern, which I think is exactly what I needed for an upcoming project, so thanks for that. Though, I do align with one of the commenters here—this doesn’t seem like the same thing as the Baked data pattern in that Simon’s approach was about using a server rendered app with read-only data instead of generating a lot of static pages.

Nevertheless, this seems like a nice way for static generators to work with bit more complex data sources without dumbing them down to JSON/YAML.

sangeeth96··on Windows 365 Link is a $349 mini PC that streams Windows from the cloud
The timing of this is so poor for Microsoft after Apple delivered a savage beatdown with the new M4 Mini. As a former Windows camper, this is just so disappointing to see.
sangeeth96··on $8k Suzuki from India received a 5-star crash test rating
There are more factors than people not driving during those times:

> The phenomenon is made possible by a dramatic improvement in air quality in recent weeks, after industries shut down, cars came off the road and airlines canceled flights in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

> Delhi saw up to a 44% reduction in PM10 air pollution levels on the first day of its restrictions, India’s Central Pollution Control Board found. The PM10 standard measures airborne particulates 10 micrometers or smaller in diameter.

sangeeth96··on Show HN: I built PixSpeed to optimize website images for free
Since I'm committing my blog into git, I found it better to pre-optimize my images so that my repo won't balloon. At first, I wrote a script that simply `find`s my non-WebP images, turns them into WebP. It then looks for those image references in my *.md files and replaces the extension with WebP.

But now, I have a better workflow where I use the Image Converter plugin[^1] in Obsidian since that's how I'm composing my notes primarily. As I paste the images into the markdown file, it gets converted and embedded. There's also Clop[^2] for macOS which auto converts if I copy an image/file to my clipboard into my desired format and quality.

Quite happy with this setup for the time being.

sangeeth96··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
I was hoping they'd revive the Oasis. That form factor is _perfect_ IMO. Scribe is too big for a replacement. I settled for a Libra 2 which is similar to the Oasis but I feel it's a bit sluggish when it comes to chapter turns, highlights and page turns w/ images but I don't have something in the Kindle line-up to compare it to now.
sangeeth96··on There Is No Website

sangeeth96··on Hacking the largest airline and hotel rewards platform (2023)
I've always felt most such rewards program portals and apps were more hack-jobs than serious applications and thus, would be riddled with issues like these. I'm from India and I see many of these sites come and go all the time but not a single one has inspired confidence in me about keeping my data safe. For example, even the topmost cards here (HDFC Diners/Infinia) have a shoddy website, mostly a reskinned version of their generic rewards platform/partner.

And I'm not just hand-waving here cause there are many forums that discuss taking advantage of their bad implementations to maximize returns. Even when one eventually gets patched, another springs up.

I also read it as "software critics" but isn't it grammatically correct? Maybe our minds mess it up given the context and our backgrounds.
sangeeth96··on July 2024 Update on Instability Reports on Intel Core 13th/14th Gen Desktop CPUs
Yeah sure, calling out Intel for lack of any good updates over the crashing laptop/desktop CPUs and demanding a recall after giving them such a long time to come up with a reasonable solution is definitely "weirdo" territory.

FWIW, I have connections who splurged on these only to deal with BSODs all the friggin' time. Some of them even work at Intel.

sangeeth96··on After initially rejecting it, Apple has approved the first PC emulator for iOS
It's a step in the right direction, being able to squeeze all the perf out of these devices to run proper full-fledged OS' that Apple seems to not want to do. It's okay to get excited over stuff like this and I'd bet a lot of good shit that solves your real world problems started from hobbyist adventures (see this little project called Linux).
