sandebert··on Ask HN: Do you still use email?
It's a subjective perception of yours. I'm not seeing any changes in my life or the people around me.
sandebert··on Now your car is a cybersecurity risk, too
I suppose a "historic car" should be called "feature car", the same way as old-school mobiles are called "feature phones".
sandebert··on Play the trombone in your web browser
To me, this sounds more like a car game on the C64. For reference, here's a trombone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-fkvWFSeYc
sandebert··on Navier-Stokes: Impossible to predict where items in the sea will wash up
I had to frankenstein the title quite a bit to get it to an acceptable length. Apologies all around.
sandebert··on An experiment caught a quantum system in the middle of a jump (2019)
When I'd studied physics, they thought the duration of a collapsar jump was exactly zero. But a couple of centuries later, they did a complicated wave-guide experiment that proved the jump actually lasted some small fraction of a nanosecond. Doesn't seem like much, but they'd had to rebuild physics from the foundation up when the collapsar jump was first discovered; they had to rear the whole damned thing down again when they found out it took time to get from A to B. Physicists were still arguing about it.

The Forever War (1974) by Joe Haldeman

sandebert··on Pencil Project – open-source GUI prototyping tool
I used this for a couple of years, way back. Grew tired of bugs and limitations, found WireframeSketcher and haven't looked back since. https://wireframesketcher.com/
sandebert··on How Facebook encodes videos
Not really.

If we unpack your calculation to slightly more typical human behaviour: Watching 1 stream × 10 hours/day × 365 days non-stop, one person would need 10 years to watch the whole catalog.

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

sandebert··on Ask HN: How to sell apps on Linux?
I'm a Linux user, and I pay for software without hesitation. In some cases I even go out of my way to try to pay for something, which isn't always accepted by the developer(s).
sandebert··on Stimulus.js 2.0
How does htmx fail?
sandebert··on The joys of owning an ‘OG’ email account
> Hard to believe people use those kinds of addresses for official business and applying for jobs, but they do.

A couple of years back, a friend was doing some recruiting. One of the applicants had the email address givesdamngreathead@hotmail.com.

(Translated, it was in another language.)

sandebert··on We should discuss soil as much as coal (2019)
I know this isn't real science or anything, but this video helped me better understand the issue with the soil.

It's from Bon Appétit, where Brad goes to a ranch in Texas. Jump to 9:30 for the soil bit. It goes on for a couple of minutes.

sandebert··on Oldest 'nearly complete' HIV genome found in forgotten tissue sample from 1966
What a sad way to ruin the song "Oh Superman" by Laurie Anderson.
sandebert··on Court: Suspicionless Searches of Travelers’ Phones and Laptops Unconstitutional
I was under the impression that going through with blank phone/laptop would in itself be considered suspicious. Is that not the case?
sandebert··on Bullshit.js
Wow, this one was absolutely amazing - good find! :)
sandebert··on 'The Restaurant of Order Mistakes' Employs Waiters With Dementia (2017)
There's a place like this in Stockholm, Sweden also. I've never tried it, so I'm not sure if it's the same concept with the menus though. Still pitch black, as i understand it.

(And for the Swedes here, the restaurant is called Svartklubben (the name is a pun in swedish), and can be found at Södermannagatan at Södermalm, near Nytorget.)

sandebert··on What Color Is Khaki, Anyway?
I asked my wife, who knows nothing about this thread, how she would describe khaki.

"Oh, beige-green, sort of."

:-)

sandebert··on What Color Is Khaki, Anyway?
Really? For me it's more beige, and I'm swedish.
sandebert··on Overclocking the Raspberry Pi 4
Came here to say the same thing. I'm amazed they thought that was a good idea.
sandebert··on Ola Bini, Swedish Software Developer with Ties to Assange, Arrested in Ecuador
He's also a former columnist for the largest IT newspaper in Sweden, called Computer Sweden.

A search for his name brings up lots of columns (Swedish only, sorry):

sandebert··on Sketch raises $20M in Series A funding
I recommend WireframeSketcher, works fine on Linux. (https://wireframesketcher.com)
sandebert··on Metal Lathe Made from Scrap Auto Parts
When society fails and we all live in the dystopic now, I want this guy on my team.
sandebert··on Which types of startups are most often profitable?
Being in Sweden, I'm apparently not allowed to read the full text as it require an "Extra Crunch membership", which isn't available outside a couple of countries. But as a consolation they inform me that they are "actively looking to launch" their membership in other areas. Not impressed.
sandebert··on Upvote for HN Darkmode?
That's what I use since forever. Can recommend. Be sure to edit settings to your liking also.

Edit: I was going to edit the post to include a link to the Android app I use (that mostly seems to embed the site), but it seems to have been removed from Play store. No idea why, works fine on my phone.

sandebert··on Show HN: Spase.io – A new kind of planner
Tried it on mobile, got blue screen with no info. Backed out, did not upvote.
sandebert··on Whitespace killed an enterprise app
This could have been written about the redesigned user panel for gandi.net. The old one looked like Windows 95, but it was very usable. The new one seems to be made as a lifestyle site for mobile users on the go. So not me. I emailed them my concerns, as a good customer and citizen. Didn't get a response, why would they bother? So I voted with my wallet and migrated all my domains.
sandebert··on Neurosurgeons have a higher rate of Alzheimer's than the population
This came up in a current thread about transmissible Alzheimer's (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19127520). I had never heard about it and found it interesting so I thought it was worth a separate submission.
sandebert··on The Case for Transmissible Alzheimer's Grows

sandebert··on Jeff Bezos Turned Narrative into Amazon's Competitive Advantage
I realize it's probably difficult to give a simple answer to this question, but roughly how long would it take to write such a memo?
sandebert··on How many keywords I can fit into a single C# expression?
This looks like something a fuzzer would come up with.
