sandebert··on Ford seeks patent for tech that listens to driver conversations to serve ads
I'm not sure that is correct. Granted, there doesn't seem to be a lot of them anymore, but they're not all gone. Here's a list of dumb phones made in 2021-2024 running an "unnamed OS": https://www.prisjakt.nu/c/mobiltelefoner?197=2024%7C2021&438... (sorry, Swedish product comparison site, but the phones should be possible to search for elsewhere on the web) I don't get the impression they are crippled smartphones.

I suppose a "dumb car" should be called "feature car", the same way as old-school mobiles are called "feature phones".
sandebert··on ShadPS4 – PlayStation 4 emulator
This YouTube video by Modern Vintage Gamer might be an interesting watch, for people interested in PS4 emulators: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZvSEdFGyxE
sandebert··on "We ran out of columns"
Nice. But I have to ask, considering it was Perl: Could an outsider understand it after you reduced it to 200 lines?

The context tends to come some time later, when they close store. "We at Derplabs are proud that we dared to make an opinionated jpeg viewer, Blorglorp, that only interpreted the four first bits of every byte and ignored the rest. Commonly referred to as 'the naughty bits' by image-viewing connoisseurs. Unfortunately the market was not ready, but we are sure our ideas will gain traction in the future. Our deepest gratitude to our customers and investors that were excited to join our journey."

sandebert··on Spreadsheets are all you need: Understanding GPT2 and Transformers
This was posted as a comment in another HN thread (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39488668), but I found it amazing and thought it should have its own post.
sandebert··on Toolong: Terminal application to view, tail, merge, and search log files
Plus it's possible to download lnav as a statically linked binary, which is very nice. (Would have been even better if it was in the official repos.) I'm not interested in installing things using yet another package manager, like pip or the like.
sandebert··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
Oh dear, that statement didn't fare well when I applied bullshit.js.

sandebert··on Meta is the 'single largest market for paedophiles', says New Mexico AG
I had to shorten the title slightly. Original:

Meta is the world’s ‘single largest marketplace for paedophiles’, says New Mexico attorney general

Reading the books right now! (The Expanse, for the ones not in the know.)
sandebert··on Spacedrive – an open source cross-platform file explorer
I agree. Just as long as you know you can't directly open files from other filesystems in your regular apps, just because you see them in Spacedrive.
sandebert··on Spacedrive – an open source cross-platform file explorer
Yeah, FUSE is Linux only. But for completeness, for macs there is macFUSE, and for Windows there is winfsp. Both of these have fewer filesystems than FUSE, and I've used neither so I don't know how well they work.

sandebert··on Spacedrive – an open source cross-platform file explorer
That's a very good point, I didn't even think about the aspect that FUSE is available system-wide, for all other applications to use transparently. That makes Spacedrive seem to come up really short, in comparison.
sandebert··on Spacedrive – an open source cross-platform file explorer
It seems to me that an alternative could be to simply pair FUSE with any standard file explorer.

sandebert··on Mushroom pickers urged: Avoid Amazon foraging books, appear to be written by AI
Because it was too long for HN. I had to work on it quite a bit to make it short enough. Sorry that I needed to manhandle it, I did not enjoy it either.

sandebert··on Ask HN: What are some of the most interesting YouTube channels to follow?
I think nobody mentioned Applied Science, so that'll be my contribution to the thread:

https://youtube.com/@AppliedScience

From his about page: "You'll see how an electron microscope was built in a home shop, how an X-ray backscatter system works, how to make aerogel, and many other hi-tech projects. Topics usually include electromechanical systems, chemistry, and electronics."
