sanarothe··on Uber cuts 3000 more jobs, closes 45 offices
Individual contributor (technical path as opposed to a managerial path)
sanarothe··on Human body-on-chip platform could speed up drug testing
This reminds me very much of manufacturing quality testing, where you do initial DoE and validation builds to develop knowledge of the process. Eventually the knowledge of procc behavior at boundary conditions is known well enough that you can start to use alternative process monitoring approaches, like building a representative mockup of in-vitro conditions that represents the actual use conditions.

It doesnt have to be the same vector, just the same eigenvector.

sanarothe··on Australia's Wildfires Spark Disinformation Battle as They Take a Tragic Toll
If root cause analysis isn't conclusive, you don't just not implement corrective actions... You act on the most likely contributing causes with no undue delay.
sanarothe··on Gatwick airport trial for valet-parking robots
In the distant future, I might be able to just get out of my car and walk away to let the robots do their thing. But in the near future, any time saving is negated by standing there watching the robo-magic :)
sanarothe··on The Uncharity of College: The Big Business Nobody Understands
If you look at california public payroll records for CSU system, the first few pages are dozens of people getting 400 to 500k altogether. Vice president of this and that, administrator IV, etc. But you're right that the people putting in insane hours and putting their hearts in are paid significantly less. (Still over 100k for assistant prof. Or department dean)
sanarothe··on Do I really need to get out the soldering-iron again?
JlcPCB do a similar batch-of-customer-boards thing and deliver in about a week from China to California
sanarothe··on Waymo One: The next step on our self-driving journey
Having recently trusted that intuition and nearly being T boned, human drivers can currently do anything...
sanarothe··on The frustration and quasi freedom of being an Uber driver
The shittiness of their system goes both ways -- It's not fun running a couple blocks down the road trying to get to an uber that won't drive to you, only to have them cancel and collect the $5.
sanarothe··on College Presidents Making $1M Rise with Tuition and Student Debt
I filled in at a student org council meeting at my school the other day, and they were presenting our plan for a new gym, at the mandatory low cost of $200 added to every student's semester tuition. ($40/month gym fee for everybody! Where's the gym again?)

Apparently the 14 million dollars in annual revenue would still never pay for the renovations.

sanarothe··on A Rust Belt Native and Technologist Re-Thinking American Manufacturing
I'm doing an ME degree right now, and they teach us both Solidworks and Pro-E (now Creo Parametric.)

If I remember the results of googling 'Creo vs Solidworks' correctly, Creo is better at handling really big assemblies and is used extensively in automotive industry. Most of my peers prefer Solidworks.

sanarothe··on Consumers are switching to water as they avoid sugary beverages
as a native san diego, i drink tap water and dont notice anything wrong, but my girl and her dad (non natives) think its nasty. just anecdotal.
sanarothe··on Show HN: A Fortran web framework
I love it I'm imagining a sixty year old dude, revered by all around him, who spend the last forty honing his fixed-form Fortran skills. Young engineers gather around him just to marvel at this masterpiece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DTpQ4Kk2wA
sanarothe··on Yahoo is shutting down about half of its content verticals
Fun fact: practically every assigned problem in undergrad chemistry, physics and math is solved on yahoo answers.
sanarothe··on Ask HN: How do I stop comparing myself to others?
Contrarywise, I usually just hit the comments without reading the article. It's super fast for bootstrapping yourself into an issue. Does rely on the people on HN not being full of crap, though.
sanarothe··on Videogame Publishers: No Preserving Abandoned Games Because “Hacking” Is Illegal
There are private servers running every expansion, some of which have decent and playable populations.
sanarothe··on You shouldn’t use a spreadsheet for important work
This is what I'm hoping to do with a software background going to more traditional engineering.

It's just a little offputting when people talk about the tools they (have) to use -- When I first started, I would never have expected Excel to be so prominent, and Matlab so absent.

sanarothe··on CCAN - Comprehensive C Archive Network
Oh god agreed. The blog at least isn't blinding, but CCAN is.

I feel a bit like the kid who only likes the vidja-games with the fanciest, flashiest graphics but I basically won't tolerate anything less than modern style and typography anymore.

sanarothe··on Why does Ember.js rock?
I don't really like to mess with front-end stuff. Can someone explain why ember/angular are so amazing? What does it enable you to do so much more easily?
sanarothe··on Stop Penalizing Boys for Not Being Able to Sit Still at School
I just want to say that you might want to consider public high school. There's a lot of social development going on there, even if most people come out of the entire system bitter.
sanarothe··on Seriously.js

sanarothe··on Exposed Webcam Viewer
Concerned for the bird, or concerned that someone had a webcam stream of a dead bird? :)
sanarothe··on Game Over: Zynga Shuts Down PetVille And 10 Other Titles
This is really sketch, in my opinion; There are people with hundreds of dollars invested into their facebook game microtransactions. "Take the money and run" to a whole new level...
sanarothe··on Apple patents the page turn
please, take all my upvotes
sanarothe··on The amount of crap Windows users have to put up with is incredible
keep in mind that some (most) manufacturers don't seem to give any craps about the users either, and provide shoddy bloatware drivers that are difficult to hunt down, take forever to install, often don't work with older or newer OS/hardware, etc.

and then there might be a specific patch or workaround that's been applied by the oem that keeps the computer from exploding, but they sold it anyway because you can blow yourself up as much as you like AFTER voiding the warranty.

sanarothe··on NASA Pulls Off 160-Million-Mile Software Patch
I once nearly 'bricked' my router playing with some custom firmware. That in itself was terrifying, let alone the prospect of 'bricking the rover.'
