The only good thing about this blog entry was a certain comment:

Plus, we also demand human sacrifices.
sammyo··on Carol Bartz to be named new Yahoo CEO
I don't know much about Bartz but I've always been impressed with Autodesk, or rather the products 3DMax, Maya and the pro video tools.

Max is the first product I'd heard of where the developers were not tied to an office, they were all over and met once a year. When Autodesk bought Maya many thought it would be merger slash and burn but both 3D products are important in the market and have ongoing impressive development.

sammyo··on Zed Shaw: Ruby Is So Nice
House is the result of a group of very smart english majors (scriptwriters) carefully crafting both sides of an argument.
sammyo··on Zed Shaw: Ruby Is So Nice
As much as I appreciate your sentiment, I would beg to disagree. It is possible to imply scatological sentiment without resorting to 'swear words' and is occasionally appropriate. Although it requires effort, constructing a sentence or phrase that is more precise on whatever topic is vastly more effective than either "good job" or "god damn fucking shit". The use of either is both lazy and frequently just plain ineffective.
sammyo··on Twitter/Weather Mashup I put together over a few nights.
Found my town from the ip address and then when I tested a post it appeared as fast as I could switch windows and reload.
sammyo··on Ask HN: What's your philosophy?
Why should one have 'a' philosophy? There are many fine mutually contradictory philosophies, I choose all.

If you do date two women at the same time, give each a present: a small bottle of the SAME perfume.

(Just passing on some advice from a smart guy I worked with)

sammyo··on Who owns the west? The Government [map]
Many of those areas are mountainous infertile wasteland and forests that are mostly logged off. Shoulda just sold off the lower half of Manhattan last year ;-)
sammyo··on Poll: How do you feel about making HN invite only?
The irony is that Groucho was almost immediately invited to join the country club that inspired that comment.
sammyo··on A Costly Parade, by Why the Lucky Stiff, and that NodeBox pong game -- in Shoes
"Ergo, Zed is Hannah Montana."

Hello? I thought "Zed is dead", but now really, all that needed was an overt HCE reference to boost such a fine diatribe into the literary flame sphere.

sammyo··on Ask HN: best way to become a "Numerati"?
If you're a hacker you might look for a niche in the R project and do some development.

Cheap & Easy? Woo! (thread creation that is)

I think it will not really take off until the general infrastructure (millions and millions of cores) is more generally pervasive.

sammyo··on Bait and switch
> Reduce speed with 30%, and you'll reduce the total energy consumption by a considerable amount.

This is one of the (few?) cases where government regulation is appropriate, one airline would go out of business but if every route changed there would be a month of griping and folks would get used to it.

The re-scheduling, route planning, change in maintenance schedules, etc would be a one time cost, but if that's true I can't imagine the airlines are not secretly hoping for something like that to give them some help.

sammyo··on Ask YC: Want to learn about GPS/Location Based Programming. Where to start?
The GPS chip/unit embeded in cell phones is incredibly minimal (at least when I reviewed the topic a couple years ago). The phone itself does not calculate lat/lon. The phone captures the bare timebase GPS signal, uplinks the raw sat numbers to a server which calculates the actual coords and transmits that back to the phone.

But privacy issues are probably the biggest reason lat/lon is not more available for app usage.

sammyo··on Shortest summary of the release of Arc and the Lisp world's reaction
I noticed this while looking for cute kitty photos on reddit this morning, surprisingly the discussion remained remarkably on topic. That Arc spurs a mostly rational discussion on reddit is perhaps an indicator of the value of the exercise.
sammyo··on OpenID Usability: Two Solutions That Could Take OpenID Mainstream
It'll catch on when articles don't include so many if/but/maybes. My eyes tend to just glaze over whenever I read about OpenID, so many fuzzy caveats.
