sammyo··on After a spectacular crash, Bitcoin makes a surprising comeback
No one here has attended a wedding or bar mitzvah? That silly dance is far from dead, which is not all that important depending on your social set but does give some doubt on the analysis.
sammyo··on Odd Things Happen When You Chop Up Cities and Stack Them Sideways
That may be partially accurate, the large park in the center (Boston Common) was originally a public grazing area. But Boston was originally a small round island at the end of a long isthmus and many streets are spokes or perimeter arcs around the waterfront or older obstructions. Incredible amounts of landfill in the 1800s changed the borders of the city but by then core roads had been long established.
sammyo··on Ask PG: What Is The Most Frighteningly Ambitious Idea You Have Been Pitched On?
I clicked through looking for an auo-micro-composting mechanism. And auto-harvesting. Did you have ideas about handling blights, molds and other diseases?
sammyo··on Space isn't ours.
Once we have a society that lives, works and builds in orbit there will likely be active recycling.
sammyo··on Modern robotics hits Hollywood. IRIS: The most advanced camera rig ever created.
Animators have used motion control rigs for decades, they had the same range of motion but were optimized for extremely slow but the incredibly accurate registration required for repeated animation shots. The lightness of contemporary cameras also is a significant advantage.
sammyo··on Legalize Airbnb
Does a broker of services have an explicit legal responsibility to monitor tax issues of the clients? Wouldn't that put an absurd onus onto services like craigslist?
sammyo··on My Raspberry Pi Thinks It's a Mainframe
If you had been around that generation of systems and toggled in a 30 byte program in hex or octal that loaded a paper tape or card deck that then loaded the actual OS, bootstrap seemed a reasonable term.
sammyo··on I am a statistician and I buy lottery tickets
Oh that's funny, I went and actually read the article and his conclusion is exactly this point.
sammyo··on I am a statistician and I buy lottery tickets
Best entertainment value ever: When one of the big jackpots was making the news I bought one as much to head off the conversation of why not than anything, but it triggered these incredible technocolor daydreams! I was not bored on the subway for days. Diminishing returns though, since then the occasional ticket never had the same internal result.
sammyo··on Theoretical physicist explains why Moore's Law will collapse
That is for what is essentially a 2D chip surface. Certainly layering chips has not been a viable option so far but look at the various "nano" machines that have been in science news, today a micron-sized modle truck, perhaps the next/next gen chips will have fractal surfaces that extend/configure/grow dynamically.
sammyo··on Asteroid Mining Venture Backed by Google Execs, James Cameron Unveiled
Not an uncommon Science Fiction theme. And at the moment seems much more likely than a FTL drive.
sammyo··on DIY Drones Take on Silicon Valley
I wonder if anyone is looking at a hydrogen balloon/drone hybrid. Small so it's not a Hindenburg bomb, lots of failsafe, but the power/lift ratios might give it a significant mission duration.
sammyo··on An Experiment: Polyphasic Sleeping
The sailors that cross oceans single-handed use some variant of this. The reports I've read is that the first two days are quite hard to handle but once in the quite issolated routine it works for certain folks.
sammyo··on Why I canceled my college subscription
For coding and even designing systems minimal college is probably sufficient. Now in your spare time review some of that serious math, not just basic calc but real differential equations or the subtler bits of stats. Doing math is really tough after college.

The blogger clearly has a grasp of English composition, but how's his history or other broad academic topics that should be more pervasive in society? Wouldn't it be wonderful if Leno announce that they stopped doing the JayWalk segment because they couldn't stump anyone.

sammyo··on Ask HN: more sites like HN
For reasonably curated quite wide ranging topics:

sammyo··on Poll: Do you test your code?
I think you'd find out most significant software has some kind of testing, but if you inherit a quarter mil lines of code, need to make one focused change, making the case to spend six months to write full coverage just does not get funded.
sammyo··on Why Are Harvard Graduates In The Mailroom
The guy that can negotiate a huge robot sales contract and use that to do a leveraged buyout that puts him in the CEO chair is at the top of the chain. (what a lovely reddit style chain of comments ; -)
sammyo··on Music artist: "Why I prefer piracy to Spotify"
I heard a recent song writers music playing at the grocery the other day, how much per play do you think the artist gets for that? It would make a more accurate metric than trying to compare CD sales.
sammyo··on The Closed, Unfriendly World of Wikipedia
Looking through the list of deletion candidates I saw merging as an alternative to a delete.
sammyo··on How Google did their barrel roll trick
I only had to type "do a ba" in chrome before completion triggered the transform.
sammyo··on Show HN: BestSFBooks, Mashup of the Best SF/Fantasy Books
A hook into Google book library reference 'available at your local library' would be awsome.
sammyo··on Netflix Splits DVD And Streaming Businesses
From the outside it appears that Netflix is reacting late to market forces and business partners. Netflix had seemed to be growing in size and more importantly 'clout'. The 'media biz' is run on relationships, trading huge favors and controlling vertical markets. If Netflix has little influence or trading tokens then it will eventually be marginalized. Blockbuster seemed to be just just what it's title implies for a while, now it seems more like a blip.
sammyo··on The $700 Million Yogurt Startup
From the small cheese manufactures I've seen it requires a long term love of the process and a resource, something like a family farm without a significant mortgage. The markup on artisan cheese seems pretty incredible.
sammyo··on Suspension, Ban or Hellban?
From the comments from folks here who were hellbaned that then subsequently modified their behavior, the banning options in the software should have some easily review periodic samples of the banned users posts so they can be unbanned if the issue was a short term anomaly.
sammyo··on An Introduction to Data Mining
It just helped me a lot. Last night I'd drilled down reading about Support Vector machines and seeing that chart put a bunch of topics in focus.
sammyo··on Take a stand against patent trolls
Not directly but ignoring a request from a court of law can quickly annoy a judge.
sammyo··on Rubular: a Ruby regular expression editor and tester
Hacker News should consider a "best of" list of some sort. Consider the sidebar feature on Metafilter.
sammyo··on What Hollywood Execs Privately Say About Netflix
There's some ad where the announcer states "available 28 days before netflix". I mean Netflix should be paying for such good advertising.
sammyo··on Whats New in Emacs 24
strong-ai-mode
sammyo··on Testing is waste of time, I know that my code works
7) Just can't start that diet. I know it's a good idea, I certainly do it informally to some degree, but it's not part of the culture, building up the infrastructure is a bother, but basically just the inertia of day to day stuff holds me back. (sigh, maybe a new years resolution?)
