sametmax··on Google is ramping up its efforts to replace SMS with RCS
Will RCS work on dumb phones and phones without data or wifi ?

Asking for real, I've never heard of the tech.

SMS for me are a godsend. They work with every phones, every carriers. They work on terrible networks. They work in the mountains, in the country side, in the trains and cars when going fast, in many tunnels and metros. They work in crazily lost places when I travel. Once I sent a text to my father from the Dogon country, a northern part of Mali where there is only sand and a few goats.

Lost your phone ? If you can remember/find the phone number, get a cheap sim, send a text, you are back in business. No permission scheme, no auth, no friends to add or certificate. 1 SIM = 1 ID is also very convenient.

SMS is the email of phone. Limited. Primitive. Efficient. Reliable.

So if you want to replace it with something else, you need a very good story.

sametmax··on Have You Ever Tried to Sell a Diamond? (1982)
> IIRC, one of the old problems with general/convenience stores was having to ask around about which products are good, and branding has mostly solved that.

I lived in Africa for a little time, so I had to learn to do that. As an introvert geek, it was painful.

But going back to France, what strikes me is how much more efficient eventually this solution is.

So many brands failed us: intel, oracle, facebook, etc. They haven't paid nearly close to half the price of how they misbehaved with their customers.

Brands don't allow me to build much trust.

Local sellers however ? Well, once I befriend local shop owner, I trust him or her to really tell me which products is worth what.

sametmax··on Have You Ever Tried to Sell a Diamond? (1982)
My personal favorite are currently "Bill Gates is a great guy", and "Microsoft loves open source". They have been fantastically orchestrated for the last few years in regular medias, but also on sites like HN, reddit or even imgur (!).

And it worked very, very well. The pro BG and MS sentiment is growing more and more every day, while 15 years ago, they were evil.

Partly because the communication was amazingly good, smart, and on the long run. Partly because they Gates and Big M did do good things in the mix to support the narrative, and so it looks very real.

It's nicely done, you'll notice a few posts here and there, but the real work is done in the comment, like gardening.

sametmax··on TypeScript 3.6
You are right. Let's remove the "+" operator in favor of operator.add. It's totally worth the readability.

I'm sorry but "|" is not only a very commonly known operator in the entire programming world, it is already an officially supported operator by python, vastly used by the community for doing unions: sets use it, sqlalchemy use it, pandas use it.

Let's not confuse explicite and paperwork.

sametmax··on TypeScript 3.6
And you can even do that with dict in the most recent version of mypy.

But the fact you have to import Union instead of using a pipe bothers me. It's useless boilerplate and verbose. So not o Python. I reported it, but Guido told me it will not happen.

Sure, they are not the top dog anymore. They can't get away with insulting people the way they used too.

Business as usual.

sametmax··on Beyond Meat and KFC partner to test fried plant-based ‘chicken’
Just anecdotal, but I was once chatting on a plane with a guy working as a meat buyer for a major dog food brand. He told me his work was to negotiate the cheapest thing that would pass legally as meat as possible, in the biggest quantity as possible. He then mentioned in passing that his toughest competition was Mc Donald's.
sametmax··on North American versus European distribution systems (2011)
Maybe the article is trying to stay relevant in a few months :)
sametmax··on Douglas Adams was right–knowledge without understanding is meaningless
It is. But it's also more. If I give you a list of all unix commands and you don't understand them, you won't go far.
sametmax··on Is Science Political?
There is not a single thing you can't interpret as political. The question is more about intent, both from the emitter, and the receiver.
sametmax··on Google Doesn’t Want Staff Debating Politics at Work Anymore
Somebody probably said that just before an innovation is made. Many times.
sametmax··on SuperSQLite: SQLite library for Python (2018)
Works well if your data is big and doesn't have to be read on a web browser.
sametmax··on Show HN: CLI tool for saving web pages as a single file
Good, but won't work with the heavy JS pages using Ajax to load any single content.

The firefox extension seems to do that :

sametmax··on Why Does Developing on Kubernetes Suck?
Even an occasional site crash is ok. I'm not saying it's a good user xp, and avoiding it is both better for the tech team and the marketting one.

But the cost of a 500 is always to be balanced with the cost of going full throttle with micro services.

As perfectionists, it's easy to fall into the trap of choosing the later by default.

sametmax··on Why Does Developing on Kubernetes Suck?
The trick is to understand that most products don't need to have 99% uptime. Your business will be fine if you are offline once in a while.

Hell, the stock market goes offline every night.

Those last % of uptime are very, very expensive at every level (money, people, logistic...). They better be worth it.

sametmax··on Two brothers invented an alphabet for their native language, Fulfulde
Wouldn't the International Phonetic Alphabet be a good starting point ?
sametmax··on Across the Universe, a star exploded so violently that it annihilated itself
True, but it's enough. We don't need more that what we already got. We don't even use most of it.
sametmax··on It is perfectly OK to only code at work, you can have a life too
Given that the market is so unbalanced in favor of programmers, and will keep being that way for the next 10 years, that's hardly an issue.
sametmax··on Across the Universe, a star exploded so violently that it annihilated itself
The earth already does that, we just call it our ecosystem. It's why we have clean water, carrots, coal and, and the end the chain, the internet to talk about it.
sametmax··on The Population Bust
I didn't express a scientific prediction, but used an image of extreme poverty and pollution to underline the caveats of overpopulation.

What's more, the vast majority of indian population consumme much less than the average american.

Democracy, health care, education, respect of the individual, peace... All that are affected, at various degree of overpopulation. There is not need to mirror your stats.

sametmax··on The Population Bust
If we don't want the entire earth to looked like mumbai, i'd say it's even the only way to go.

Space is not going to save us any time soon, people suck at restraining themself and given our current situation we can approximate our planet to a close system with finite resources.

So yeah, I'd go with less babies. Or more deaths, but one is more pleasant.

sametmax··on Taming OpenAPI using Racket to create a DSL
Why didnt they use the language they already coded the API in then ?
sametmax··on Highlights from Git 2.23
I should be a separate cmd. It's such a common operation, and it's a huge noob trap.
sametmax··on YouTube Blacklist Censors Content Containing Certain Keywords
Google is not a public service. They are a for profit company. They are not our friends, their youtube ranking algo is not designed to be fair and improve the life of human kind. It's designed to make money.

I don't get the outrage: we warned people for 15 years this would happen. Now people put all their eggs in the same basket and cry when things go wrong.

Well, good. It's a learning opportunity.

sametmax··on Poetry: Dependency Management for Python
Love poetry, I hope it gets to feature parity with pew regarding project naming and jumping.
sametmax··on Poetry: Dependency Management for Python
They can't support reading the poetry data because it's not generic. Nor are most practical implementations of tools using pyproject.toml because they all use custom tool-namespaced fields in pyproject.toml: it's far from a standardized format yet, despite the push for using it from the people that made it.

I still wish poetry would support setup.cfg in parallel. It has been working for 2 years, is compatible with pip, setuptools and the whole legacy stack, and most fields are standards and documented.

sametmax··on Python Is Eating the World
Use virtualenv. Always.

Python 3 comes with it as "python -m venv". Once in the virtualenv, you don't have to worry about the various pip forms and effects, you can just pio install.

You can get fancier than that of course, but that's what works with stock python, on all OS.

sametmax··on The Clean Farming Revolution
It is a lot of work, but there is litterally an order of magnitude in time and energy you spend to get the same result, depending of your technic. And when you start, you usually do it the hardest way.
sametmax··on Beijing says military could intervene in Hong Kong
The Chinese army will just block the few places where you can land with infantry.

At which point do you think the first bullet of the war fires ?

sametmax··on Beijing says military could intervene in Hong Kong
We have let it happen in Africa many times, buy people with mostly machetes.

Here we are talking about what is now the biggest, baddest bully in the room. 1.3 billion people, our entire economy in hostage and the nuclear bomb.

Chine doesn't have to worry about the opinion of the rest of world.
