sameers··on US Tech Sector Announces Most Job Cuts in Nearly Two Years
If my experience running a small company, and not needing to hire junior talent as urgently as in the pre-AI days, is any indication, this transition is going to take a while. I can't justify hiring someone that isn't already ready to use AI tools to get familiar with the codebase, work out designs on their own, etc. In an alternate universe, I would have just hired someone at a lower level of maturity and let them learn the ropes, or fired them. Now I would rather get someone who already knows what questions to ask of LLMs, how to sequence the work, etc.

Ofc, eventually we'll all run out of that limited supply of experienced engineers, and will have to hope there's a cohort that's been training on these new skills, and is ready for employment. Meanwhile it'll be hell for everyone stuck in the middle of these experience levels.

sameers··on H-1B Crackdown on Indian Workers Erodes a Texas Real Estate Boom
I'm an immigrant myself, from India. How people thought they could take such huge financial decisions on the basis of the broken, unpredictable, immigration policies of the US is so beyond me. I know why some Indians have such an exaggerated sense of entitlement. I know why some of them feel they have no other option but to take this gamble. All the same, the extent of exposure they've subjected themselves and their families to is just impossible for me to rationalize.

The title made me think the result would BE a sixteen year old person, maybe a social media profile or personal blog site. And I tried to figure out if it was supposed to be an example of an LLM glitch or something.

sameers··on The Biggest Tell That Something Was Written by AI
This part - "AI programs’ efficiency in generating smooth, grammatical text is irresistible, whether you need a savvy sentence in a job application or a line of banter on a dating app" - made me wonder: who finds it irresistible to surrender their individuality when bantering on a dating app to a sequence modelling algorithm?

The article talks about the writing "elites," who normally are expected to take pride in writing. But what about those who just find it fun and exhilarating? Pride after all is a sin, a predictor famously of decline. And perhaps that's what explains the willingness of those (maybe even including Fairbanks, this article's author) who see their relationship to their writing and their status in that world as one of pride to acquiesce in this moment of literary seppuku.

If you're writing, creating, communicating, to compete and be fêted, then you're predisposed to be seduced by a tool that can so quickly put badges on raccoons. If you're doing it to discover your sense of self, your use of that tool is entirely different and you'll naturally keep its output at arm's length from what you actually own as "your writing."

sameers··on US strike campaign against drug boats tops 200 deaths
I think if you read it as "campaign meant for drug boats," it isn't editorialized. The actual boats struck are alleged drug boats indeed; the stated desire was to only hit actual "drug boats."

At any rate, even if all the boats struck were carrying drugs in violation of American law, murdering the crew is still not an acceptable form of punishment.

sameers··on The Last Technical Interview
I couldn't find the text of this joke, attributed to Dirac. I'll paraphrase.

A man walks into a pet store. There's a parrot for $100, it says this parrot speaks perfect English . The one next to it is $1,000, and says, This parrot speaks 12 languages fluently.

Then there's a bedraggled looking, droopy, parrot, and its label simply says One Million Dollars.

Does it sing opera and has successfully run for President? the man asks with a sneer.

This parrot, says the store owner, _thinks_.

That's what this entire post is about - how to evaluate people with a series of attributes, score, correlate, blah blah blah.

Hire them, see if they think. If they don't, fire them. It's cheaper than this credential/signal rigmarole, most of which is about CYA legal b+llsh1t. Yes, it's a simplistic strategy and it doesn't work for Shoogle, Banthropic, Goober, whatever. You know what, boo f*cking hoo. You're a trillion dollar company, suck it up. You have a zombie horde at your doors and you're just upset the "true gems" are hard for you to spot amongst the slavering masses. You're going to heartlessly lay them off anyway in a few years. You SHOULD feel this pain and anguish of having to sort through them, constantly regretting all your choices. That's the only way to have balance in the Universe.

sameers··on The White House Intervened to Get a $620M Deal for Donald Trump Jr
This administration has certainly committed brazen acts of corruption, but this case looks like a more garden variety style "it's who you know" situation.

Don Jr. had invested two years ago, it says, and could deny he did so knowing his father would have influence on Pentagon loans at the time. The firm can be touted as "protecting national security" so the loan itself is justifiable.

It's all spun as "smart business thinking," and "everyone else does it," etc. And that's also not entirely untrue. If any Democrat politician were to make noise about it, the Republicans will probably go, Well, what about Hunter (Biden)? The libs will have been owned, mission accomplished.
