The correct way to look at stock investment is to say "I bought a stake in the future of the world's industry". And that makes you realize what a mind-bogglingly large gamble this is with your savings. People simply have faith that human life will keep improving over the long term, and hence the value of the world's industry will also keep going up irrespective of short term rises and falls.
That point of view is rather unfortunate. Why does it have to be about damages? GP even ends his comment on a very postitive note about things that would help. Not every mistake needs to be punished. It was a false positive, and it was heartening to see that all the parties acted fast enough. Why not just move on instead of outraging over hypothetical concerns?
EDIT: I have no idea how to quote parent comments here.
On the non-tech side, I started learning Tabla (a musical instrument) this year. This is far enough out of my daily activities that I am getting a kick out of the new skills I need to master, especially the dexterity required to play different strokes with each hand while keeping time!
"Gee, that’s complicated! I must be really smart to have
written such a function, right?
Wrong! I just have a trick!"
Seems like the author deliberately picked an example that looks hard but isn't once you understand what he wants to say.I was afforded the "luxury" of doing a PhD instead of getting a job out of college because my older brother was working and assumed the financial responsibility of the house. Now I work too, and if the occasion arises, I am happy to part with reasonable sums of money without even thinking of whether it is meant to be repaid or not.
EDIT: fixed typo "tomorrows"
Sad to note that they didn't survey India!
I live in a newer area of Bangalore and my apartment is surrounded by construction sites. There's a settlement of construction workers right across the road. What we see is small temporary one-room houses with satellite TV, and families that dress up and go out every Sunday. We even see them buying basic cosmetics in the local stores. Kids are not visible in the day time either in the settlement or on the construction sites, and I like to hope that they are actually in school.
The older kid said her first sentence consisting of three words at 18 months, but the younger kid did not. By that stage, both had a large vocabulary of words to express themselves, and even larger vocabulary of words that they understood.
EDIT: Missed the detail about "since birth". So no, my example does not answer your question, since they were exposed to only one language --- Marathi --- until 18 months.
Totally agree. Our shopping habits have changed drastically over the last year. Trips to the local stores have gone down from twice a week, to once on alternate weekends for specific items. We use a combination of online retailers, and were very happy to see Flipkart buy Myntra. Wondering if they would also like to gobble up more with the additional funding they get.
Stretching the online story further, I always wondered if it makes sense for Flipkart to take over an online book library, like JustBooks. They could ship every book with a note saying "If you liked reading this book, here's how to buy a copy from us". Flipkart does have much better quality of service than JustBooks!
I have the opposite experience. I check prices over a few days before buying, and Flipkart always comes ahead. Permanently gave up on Snapdeal after returning a pair of shoes (only one shoe in the box!), then its replacement (wrong size), and then again its replacement (wrong model).
"Has anyone really been far as decided to use even go want to do look more like?"
